To play co-op in Elden Ring, the host uses a Furlcalling Finger Remedy to reveal summon signs, while the guest places a gold sign with Tarnished’s Furled Finger. For a private session, both players must enter the same Multiplayer Password—not a Group Password.
Co-op supports one host and up to two summoned allies. It is session-based rather than a persistent shared campaign, and defeating a boss advances the host’s world only.

What you need
- A copy of Elden Ring on the same platform family as your friend. PlayStation, Xbox and PC players cannot play together.
- An internet connection.
- An online subscription where required: PlayStation Plus on PlayStation, or an Xbox plan that includes console multiplayer, such as Game Pass Core. PC players use Steam’s online services without a console subscription.
- The latest game update. As of the latest listed patch, the title screen should show App Ver. 1.16.1 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1. See the official patch notes.
Cross-generation play works within a console family—for example, PS4 with PS5 and Xbox One with Xbox Series X|S. The Cross-Region Play setting does not enable cross-platform play; it only affects regional matchmaking.

Put both players online
On both systems, open System → Network and use:
- Cross-Region Play: Perform Matchmaking
- Send Summon Sign: Enable
- Launch Settings: Play Online
If the game was started offline, change Launch Settings to Play Online, return to the title screen and log in. If the title screen does not show the current regulation version, select LOGIN so the game can download it.

Set a private password
Open Multiplayer → Multiplayer Password and enter the same password on both consoles or PCs.
Use Multiplayer Password for a friend-only session. It filters matchmaking to players using that password and removes the usual level and weapon-upgrade matchmaking restrictions. A higher-level guest is scaled down when joining a lower-level host; a lower-level guest is not scaled up.
Do not use Group Password. It makes messages, bloodstains, phantoms and some summon signs from group members more likely to appear, but it does not create a private co-op lobby or control matchmaking. The official online-play manual explains the underlying systems.

Choose one player to be the host. The other player becomes the cooperator.
1. The guest places a sign
- Go to the agreed location.
- Open the Multiplayer menu.
- Select Tarnished’s Furled Finger.
- Confirm the placement of the gold summon sign.
A sign can usually be placed near a Site of Grace, outside a boss fog wall or in another eligible location.

2. The host reveals signs
- Travel to the same general area.
- Use a Furlcalling Finger Remedy.
- Look for the friend’s gold sign.
- Interact with it and confirm the summon.
The Remedy is consumed when the host activates co-op. It can be crafted, purchased or obtained through multiplayer activity. Gold signs are cooperative signs; red signs are associated with hostile or duel play. See Xbox’s multiplayer guide for the item basics.
Using summon pools instead
If the guest does not need to appear at one exact spot, summon pools can be quicker.
- Find and interact with a Martyr Effigy to activate the local summon pool.
- Open the Multiplayer menu.
- Select Small Golden Effigy.
- Choose the option to send the sign to nearby activated summon pools.
- The host uses a Furlcalling Finger Remedy and searches for the gold sign.
The distinction matters: Tarnished’s Furled Finger places a sign at the guest’s exact location, while Small Golden Effigy distributes it to eligible nearby pools. The guest’s sign may therefore appear somewhere other than the host’s current position.
What co-op lets you do
Co-op places the summoned players in the host’s version of the area. You can explore, fight enemies and defeat the area boss together, but campaign progress is primarily recorded in the host’s world.
When the host defeats a boss, that boss is not automatically defeated in the guests’ worlds. Each guest must return to their own game and defeat it there if they want their own progression.

Normal campaign co-op also disables Torrent and Spirit Ashes while player allies are present. The standard game supports up to three players total in campaign play: one host and up to two cooperators. Its arena player limit is a separate feature.
When the session ends
Co-op ends when:
- The host defeats the area boss.
- The host dies.
- A summoned cooperator dies.
- A player disconnects.
- The host or guest uses a Finger Severer.
Guests return to their own worlds. You can repeat the summoning process afterward, provided the host is still in an area eligible for co-op.
The area-boss restriction
The host normally cannot summon player cooperators in an area after defeating that area’s relevant boss. This is one of the most common reasons a friend cannot be summoned or no signs appear.
It does not mean that an entire region is permanently closed. The restriction is tied to the relevant multiplayer area and boss, so the host may still be able to summon in another area where the boss remains undefeated.

The same password is set, but the sign is invisible
- Confirm both players used Multiplayer Password, not Group Password.
- Check that both players are on compatible platforms.
- Confirm both games are set to Play Online.
- Update both games to the same current version.
- Make sure the host used a Furlcalling Finger Remedy.
- Make sure the guest placed a sign with Tarnished’s Furled Finger or sent one with Small Golden Effigy.
- Check that the host has not defeated the relevant area boss.
- Check that the host does not already have two cooperators.
- Move to a location where signs can be placed and displayed.
The guest placed a sign, but the host sees nothing
A placed sign is not visible until the host uses a Furlcalling Finger Remedy. If the guest used Small Golden Effigy, the relevant Martyr Effigy must have been activated first.

The sign appears, but summoning fails
A sign can become invalid if another player summons it first, the guest cancels or moves it, or the connection fails during the handshake. Have the guest replace the sign, have the host use the Remedy again and retry.
If it continues, verify the online settings, matching versions, Cross-Region Play setting and the status of the relevant platform’s network services.
The host can see signs but cannot summon anyone
The host may have already defeated the area boss, may already have two cooperators, or may be in a location that does not permit player summoning. In these cases, changing the password will not bypass the game’s area rules.
Can you play the whole campaign together?
Not continuously. Elden Ring does not provide a persistent shared campaign or a drop-in lobby. Each session begins with the host revealing a guest’s sign and ends after death, disconnection, boss victory or manual separation. Friends can repeatedly reconnect, but each player retains their own world progression.

Two-player co-op checklist
- Both players choose System → Network → Launch Settings → Play Online.
- Both choose Cross-Region Play → Perform Matchmaking.
- Both enter the same password under Multiplayer → Multiplayer Password.
- The guest uses Tarnished’s Furled Finger at the agreed location.
- The host uses a Furlcalling Finger Remedy.
- The host selects the friend’s gold sign and confirms the summon.
- Repeat after a death, disconnection or boss victory.
