Yes. You can play Cobblemon with friends without renting or configuring a dedicated server. Use Open to LAN when everyone is on the same home network, Essential world hosting for invite-based remote play, or E4MC to give an Open to LAN world a temporary internet address. In all three cases, one player’s computer runs the world, so the session ends for everyone when that host closes the world or loses the connection.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
Cobblemon runs only on Minecraft: Java Edition; it is not available on Bedrock Edition. The current Cobblemon installation guide displays Minecraft 1.21.1, but every player must use the same Minecraft release, mod loader, Cobblemon build, and supporting mods as the host.

Multiplayer problems are usually caused by mismatched installations rather than by the connection method. Prepare one known-good Cobblemon profile first, then reproduce it for every player.
- Minecraft: Java Edition: Bedrock players cannot join a Cobblemon Java setup.
- One exact game version: Use the same Minecraft version in every launcher profile. Cobblemon’s current installation page shows 1.21.1, but follow the version required by the Cobblemon release you actually install.
- The same loader: Every player must use the same supported mod loader and loader version.
- The same Cobblemon build: A different Cobblemon version can prevent a connection or produce missing-content errors.
- The same dependency set: Install every library and supporting mod required by the chosen Cobblemon profile, with matching versions.
- A launcher profile that can load the mod: Test that the host can enter a single-player world before attempting multiplayer.
- A backup of the save: Copy the single-player world before opening it to other players. The host is exposing an active save, not a disposable server instance.
- A network decision: Decide whether everyone is on the same router or whether friends will connect over the internet. That determines the method.
Have every player launch the matching profile once before the host starts the multiplayer session. This catches missing files and loader errors while there is still time to correct them.

Which no-server method fits your group?
| Situation | Best starting point | What it provides | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyone is in the same house or on the same network | Open to LAN | Built-in Minecraft sharing with almost no extra software | Normally visible only to that local network |
| A small recurring group wants invitations and a friend-list flow | Essential world hosting | Invite-based hosting for a modded world; Essential documents up to eight simultaneous players | Exact mod matching is required, and the host must stay online |
| Friends are remote and the host wants to share an address for one session | E4MC | A temporary public hostname for an Open to LAN world, without manual router port forwarding | The address is temporary and the host still runs the world |
| The world must remain available when its owner is offline | A dedicated server or managed host | Independent uptime and a process that can run without the owner’s game open | That is outside a no-dedicated-server setup |
None of these options creates an always-on world. They are ways to share a host’s single-player session, with different ways of getting friends to it.
Method 1: Open to LAN for players on one network
Use ordinary Open to LAN when every player is connected to the same home, school, or other local network. It is the simplest and has the fewest moving parts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHost steps
- Launch the profile containing the agreed Minecraft version, loader, Cobblemon build, and dependencies.
- Open the backed-up world you want to play.
- Press Esc to open the pause menu and select Open to LAN.
- Choose the available game settings, then select Start LAN World. Minecraft displays a local port message.
- Leave the world open while friends connect and play.
Friend steps
- Launch the identical Cobblemon profile.
- From the title screen, choose Multiplayer.
- Wait for the LAN world to appear in the scan list, then select it and choose Join Server.
If the world does not appear, verify that both computers are genuinely on the same network rather than one being on a guest Wi-Fi network, mobile hotspot, or isolated virtual network. Also check that everyone finished loading the same profile before the host opened the world.
What LAN does not do
Open to LAN normally advertises the world only inside the local network. It is not a general internet-hosting feature, so a friend in another house usually will not see it. Do not begin by changing router settings simply to make a casual session work. Use Essential or E4MC for remote friends instead.

Closing the world, quitting the game, or losing the host’s computer ends access immediately. The local save remains with the host, and another player cannot open that session independently.
Method 2: Essential world hosting for invite-based remote play
Essential’s official hosting documentation describes its world hosting as a free way to play with friends without paying for a server. It adds an invitation and social interface around a host’s Minecraft world, which is convenient for a small group that plays together repeatedly.
Install it in the Cobblemon profile
- Install the Essential mod version that supports the exact Minecraft release and loader used by your Cobblemon profile.
- Place Essential in that profile alongside Cobblemon and all required dependencies. Do not create a separate unmodded profile for the host.
- Have every intended participant install the same Essential, Cobblemon, loader, and dependency versions.
- Start the profile once on each computer and confirm that the main menu loads without a mod error.
Essential states that modded worlds work when all members have the exact same mods and versions. A friend missing one dependency can fail to join even when their visible Cobblemon version appears correct.
Host a world
- Launch the matching profile and reach the main menu.
- Select Host or Host World. Essential changes labels occasionally, so use the current equivalent if the wording differs.
- Choose the single-player world you want to share and review the available basic settings.
- Start hosting, then open the host panel or social interface.
- Add or invite friends from that panel.
- Keep the game and hosted world running while everyone plays.
Friend join steps
- Start the same Cobblemon profile.
- Accept the host’s invitation.
- Open Essential’s Social or Multiplayer view and select the available hosted world.
- Join only after the host has finished loading the world.
Capacity and availability
Essential documents support for up to eight simultaneous players in a world. That is a documented product limit, not a guarantee that every Cobblemon modpack or computer will feel identical at that size. No comparable Cobblemon-specific latency, bandwidth, or RAM benchmark is established here, so treat actual performance as dependent on the host system, connection, world, and complete mod set.

The host computer acts as the server. If the host closes the world, exits the game, or goes offline, the hosted session is unavailable until that player starts hosting again. Essential does not turn the save into a persistent independent server.
If the Essential controls are missing
Interface labels can change between Essential releases. If an invite or Join Game control is absent, have everyone restart the game and ensure the host loads the world only after the other players have completed their restarts. Then check that all profiles contain the same loader, Cobblemon, Essential, and dependency versions.

E4MC is a reverse-tunneling mod that temporarily exposes a Java Edition Open to LAN world through a public domain. It is useful for an occasional remote session or for testing a modpack with one or two friends when you do not want to configure router port forwarding.
Host setup and connection steps
- Install the E4MC build matching the host’s Minecraft version and mod loader.
- Launch the Cobblemon profile and open the desired single-player world.
- Press Esc, choose Open to LAN, and start the LAN world.
- Wait for E4MC to display a temporary hostname.
- Copy that hostname exactly and send it to the friends joining this session.
- Friends open Multiplayer, choose Add Server or Direct Connect, and enter the hostname.
- Close the world when finished. Treat the displayed address as expired when that session ends.
What the tunnel changes—and what it does not
E4MC carries remote traffic to the LAN world; it does not move the world to an independent server. The host’s computer still simulates the game, stores the save, and must remain in the world. A host shutdown, game crash, or lost connection ends the session for everyone.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
Generate and share the address for the current session only. If you reopen the world later, use the newly displayed hostname rather than an old one. E4MC also requires the host to use the correct loader and version build; installing a build for another Minecraft release will not produce a working Cobblemon connection.
How to choose between Essential and E4MC
Choose Essential when invitations matter
Essential is the better fit for a regular friend group that wants to select friends from an interface instead of copying a new address each time. Its documented eight-player ceiling suits a small group, provided everyone maintains an identical mod installation.
Choose E4MC when the session is occasional
E4MC suits a one-off evening, a short modpack test, or a host who prefers a direct connection address. It avoids manual router port forwarding, but someone must distribute the temporary hostname every session and the host must stay in the game.
Stay with LAN when everyone is local
If every participant is on the same network, built-in LAN hosting avoids adding another mod or account layer. It is the quickest path from a working single-player world to a local multiplayer session.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Recognize when no-server hosting is the wrong requirement
If friends need to enter the world while the owner is asleep, traveling, or offline, these methods cannot meet that requirement. Their common dependency is the host’s running game. Use a dedicated server or managed host when independent, continuous availability is the priority.
Save safety and session habits
- Back up before the first session: Copy the world folder while Minecraft is closed, and keep the copy outside the active saves directory.
- Back up after important progress: Stop hosting cleanly, let the world finish saving, then make another copy before major mod changes.
- Do not change the mod set mid-session: Exit, update every player’s profile together, and test the host alone before inviting anyone.
- Coordinate world loading: Have friends finish restarting before the host opens the world, especially when Essential’s join controls are not appearing.
- Close normally: Save and quit instead of forcing the game process closed, reducing the chance of a damaged active save.
These precautions matter more for host-based play because the same computer is simultaneously the player, world owner, and server process.
Troubleshooting checklist
A Bedrock player cannot join
That is expected. Cobblemon is available only for Minecraft: Java Edition. Install Java Edition and the matching Java mod profile; a Bedrock client cannot connect to this setup.
The game reports incompatible mods or refuses the connection
- Compare the Minecraft version character by character.
- Compare the loader and loader version.
- Compare the Cobblemon version.
- Compare every dependency and its version, not just the main Cobblemon file.
- Confirm that everyone launched the intended profile rather than a similarly named vanilla or older profile.
The LAN world is not listed
- Confirm that the computers are on the same local network, not separate guest or isolated networks.
- Have the host close and reopen the world, then select Open to LAN again.
- Ensure the friend finished loading the same modded profile before checking Multiplayer.
- For a friend outside the network, stop troubleshooting LAN discovery and switch to Essential or E4MC.
Essential shows no invitation or join control
Restart the game on both sides. Have friends complete their restarts first, then have the host load the world. Recheck the exact mod and version set, and remember that the button may be labeled Host, Host World, or a similar current-interface term.
E4MC’s address does not work
- Verify that the installed E4MC build matches the host’s Minecraft loader and version.
- Make sure the host actually selected Open to LAN in the current world.
- Send the newly generated hostname from this session, not an address copied from an earlier session.
- Keep the host’s game open while the friend connects and plays.
The host disconnects everyone
This is the expected behavior of host-based multiplayer. The world is running on the host’s computer, so a closed world, quit game, crash, or lost host connection removes the only active server process. Reopen the save and start a new LAN, Essential, or E4MC session.

Quick Recap
Start with Open to LAN for a group sharing one network. For remote friends, use Essential if you want a repeatable invitation flow and your group fits its documented eight-player limit; use E4MC if you want a temporary address for an occasional session. Whichever method you choose, install identical Java profiles, back up the host’s save, and plan around the fact that the host must remain online.
