Discord Activities let you play supported games and use interactive apps inside a Discord voice call. The quickest route is: join a voice channel or start a call, open the App Launcher, choose an Activity, authorize it if asked, and have your friends join the same Activity.
What are Discord Activities?
Discord Activities are interactive apps that run inside Discord’s social experience. Depending on what is currently available, they can include games, quizzes, watch-together experiences, drawing tools, whiteboards, and other real-time activities.

An Activity is not the same as showing a game in your Discord status. It is also different from screen sharing, where one person broadcasts an ordinary game or application for others to watch. Some Activities are made by third-party developers, so their features, privacy terms, player limits, advertisements, and in-app purchases can vary.

What you need before starting
- A Discord account.
- The Discord desktop app or a supported browser for the clearest setup and discovery experience.
- A server voice channel, direct-message call, or group DM call.
- Friends who can join that same call or voice channel.
- A stable internet connection.
- Permission to authorize the selected app.
If an app must be installed to a server, the server owner or someone with the Manage Server permission may need to add it. Some apps may offer account installation instead, making them available across servers, DMs, and group DMs; Discord notes that account-installed apps have been part of an experimental rollout.
How to launch a Discord Activity on desktop or in a browser
- Open Discord and enter the server where you want to play, or open a DM or group DM.
- Join a voice channel, or start a voice call.
- Open the call controls. In the desktop or browser client, look for the App Launcher button at the bottom of the call. Depending on the view or client version, its position may differ.
- Browse or search for an app.
- Choose an app that offers an Activity and select its launch option.
- Approve the authorization request if Discord or the app displays one.
- Wait for the Activity to load inside Discord.
- Tell friends in the same voice channel to select the Activity and join.
The exact lobby, host controls, invitation process, and player limit depend on the individual app. Discord does not give every Activity the same controls, so check its current App Directory listing when those details matter.
How friends join your Activity
Launching an Activity does not automatically make everyone in the call a player. A friend who is already in the same voice channel generally needs to select the Activity indicator or its join control. They may also need to authorize the app the first time they use it.

Being able to see someone’s game status is not, by itself, a guarantee that the person can join an embedded Activity.
Some apps have their own lobby, invitation, account, age, region, or player-count requirements. If one person cannot join, check those app-specific rules before changing Discord-wide settings.
How to start an Activity on mobile
- Open the Discord mobile app.
- Join a server voice channel or start a DM or group call.
- Tap the call interface to reveal its controls.
- Tap the rocket icon or App Launcher control.
- Choose an available Activity.
- Authorize it if prompted.
- Ask friends in the call to join the Activity.
Discord’s mobile layout documentation identifies the rocket icon as the way to open available Activities during a call. The icon and its placement can vary with the mobile layout and app version.
Mobile availability and performance are not identical for every Activity, phone, operating system, region, or rollout. If the launcher or authorization flow is difficult to find, desktop or a browser is usually the easier discovery path.

Reduce heat and performance problems on a phone
Discord warns that Activities can make a mobile device warm. Try these measures:
- Turn off your camera while playing.
- Close other background apps.
- Minimize or close picture-in-picture.
- Keep the Activity in focus instead of leaving it in a reduced or floating view.
- Stop playing if the phone becomes excessively hot.
How to find more Discord games and Activities
Do not rely on a permanent list of “Discord games.” The available selection can change, and an app may be available in one context or rollout but not another.
Use the App Launcher
The App Launcher can show recently used or installed apps, curated collections, and search results based on relevance or popularity. Search for the type of experience you want, then inspect the result rather than assuming that every matching app launches an Activity.
Check the App Directory
On desktop or in a browser, open the server menu and go to Server name → Server Settings → App Directory. An app’s listing can help you check:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Whether it currently offers an Activity.
- What permissions it requests.
- Whether it is ad-supported.
- Whether it includes in-app purchases.
- Whether it requires server installation or supports account installation.
- Who developed it and whether it depends on an external service.
- Its supported player count and other app-specific requirements.
Search the current App Launcher or Discord App Directory rather than assuming older Activities are still available everywhere.
What to do if the game or launcher is missing
The App Launcher is not visible
- Confirm that you are actually in a voice channel or active call.
- Expand the call interface so its controls are visible.
- Look for both labels: Discord may call it App Launcher, while mobile documentation may show a rocket icon.
- Restart or update Discord.
- Try the desktop app or browser if the mobile control is missing.
Looking in a text channel instead of the call controls is a common reason the launcher appears to be absent.
The desired game does not appear
The app may no longer be listed, may not offer an Activity, may require installation through the App Directory, or may not be available for your current device, region, context, or rollout. You may also be searching for a commercial game title rather than the name used by its Discord app listing.

Search the App Launcher, inspect the App Directory listing, and verify that the app actually offers an Activity. If it is an ordinary installed game, use screen sharing instead.
Authorization fails or a friend cannot join
- Make sure everyone is in the same voice channel or call.
- Have the friend select the Activity’s join control rather than waiting for automatic entry.
- Complete the authorization prompt on each account when required.
- Check whether the Activity has reached its player limit.
- Confirm that the host has not left or ended the session.
- Review the app listing for account, server, browser, privacy, or region requirements.
- Restart Discord and try the desktop app or browser if the current client is stuck.
The Activity is stuck loading
First, leave and rejoin the voice channel or call, close and reopen Discord, and try the Activity again. If it still fails, test it in the desktop app or a supported browser and check the app’s current listing for service requirements. A failure limited to one app may be an app-side problem rather than a Discord-wide issue.
The Activity is visible but nobody can join
This can be confused with Discord’s Activity Sharing and Rich Presence settings. Open User Settings → Activity Sharing and check global sharing, server-specific sharing, and the setting controlling who can join games. For traditional installed games, also check game detection or registered games.
However, Activity Sharing is not a universal prerequisite for every embedded Discord Activity. Those settings mainly affect visibility and joinability for detectable games and Rich Presence-supported experiences. The embedded Activity’s own join flow and player limit still apply. Discord explains these distinctions in its Activity Sharing FAQ.
There is no sound
Check that you are still connected to voice, that your output device is correct, and that Discord and the device are not muted. If you are sharing a normal game rather than using an Activity, check the selected stream and application audio settings. An embedded Activity can also have its own audio or mute controls.
Activities versus screen sharing
| Choose Activities when… | Choose screen sharing when… |
|---|---|
| Everyone wants to interact directly with a supported shared app or mini-game. | Someone is running a normal PC or console game that is not an Activity. |
| You want a lightweight shared experience without installing the same game for everyone. | One person owns or runs the game and the others mainly need to watch. |
| The app appears in the App Launcher and supports your group size. | The Activity is unavailable, unsupported, or repeatedly fails to load. |
| You want Discord’s built-in shared session and join controls. | You want to show gameplay, a tutorial, or another application window. |
For screen sharing, Discord’s Go Live and Screen Share feature lets you select a detected game or application and broadcast it. That does not convert the ordinary game into a multiplayer Activity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Activities, game status, and Cloud Play Quests are different
- Embedded Activities: interactive apps launched inside a Discord call.
- Activity Sharing and Rich Presence: status and joinability features that can show what someone is doing or playing, often for a separately installed game.
- Screen sharing: a live stream of someone’s game or application.
- Cloud Play Quests: a separate experimental Discord desktop feature that streams selected games without a normal download or installation. It is not the same as an ordinary Activity.
See Discord’s documentation for Cloud Play Quests if that is the feature you meant.

Privacy, permissions, and costs
Many Activities come from third-party developers. Before authorizing one, inspect its Discord listing and consider what access it requests, who develops it, and whether it uses an external service. Also check for Ad-Supported and In-App Purchases labels.
Do not assume that every Activity is free, that every app works without an account, or that Discord controls every app’s privacy policy and payment terms. Conversely, ordinary Activity play should not be treated as requiring Discord Nitro unless the specific app or Discord listing says otherwise.
Recommended Free Tools
Adding an app to a server may require server ownership or Manage Server. If the app supports account installation, that can be an alternative, but availability of that option may depend on Discord’s rollout and the app.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play a Discord Activity without downloading a game?
Often, yes: an embedded Activity runs inside Discord. That does not apply to every game shown through status, Rich Presence, or screen sharing, and individual apps may have their own requirements.
Do I need Discord Nitro to use Activities?
Ordinary Activity use is not generally presented as requiring Nitro. Check the individual app listing for its own ads, in-app purchases, account requirements, or paid features.
Can I use an Activity in a DM?
Yes. Discord documents Activities in direct-message and group DM calls as well as server voice channels, subject to the app’s availability and requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can everyone in a voice channel join automatically?
No. Friends generally need to select the Activity’s join control, and first-time users may need to authorize it. The app may also impose a player limit.
Do I need Activity Sharing enabled?
Not for every embedded Activity. Activity Sharing mainly affects visibility and joinability for detectable games and Rich Presence-supported experiences.
