When an outcome is uncertain, the DM may ask for a dice roll. You can start with the group’s chosen rules, a character, and an adventure; buying a full rulebook is not required to begin.
What do players do in D&D?
Players make decisions for their characters and describe their actions. The DM runs the setting, portrays its other inhabitants, presents challenges, and interprets the rules. The group builds the story together: players choose how to respond, while the DM describes what follows.

Play moves among three broad areas: social interaction, exploration, and combat. A group might negotiate with a guard, search a ruin, and then fight a monster; these are different parts of play, not steps every session must follow. Combat is only one part of D&D.
How do turns and dice rolls work?
- Say what you are trying to do. Describe the action in the situation: for example, “I try to persuade the guard to let us through.” Starting with your intention gives the DM the context needed to resolve it.
- Let the DM decide whether a roll is needed. If the result is uncertain and the rules call for a test, the DM tells you what to roll. If no roll is needed, the DM can simply describe what happens.
- Roll and apply the result. The DM interprets the roll in context and explains the outcome. Rolls make uncertain results concrete; they do not replace players’ choices or the conversation at the table.
D&D uses polyhedral dice, with the 20-sided die (d20) central to many tests. You do not need to memorize every rule before your first game: the DM can guide you through a roll when it comes up. D&D Beyond’s How to Play D&D guide gives the beginner-facing version of the flow: “When you take risks or battle foes, you describe what your character does, then your Dungeon Master will tell you what to roll.”

Which D&D rules should you use?
Ask the DM or group which rules version the campaign uses before creating a character or looking up a rule. D&D Beyond’s labels distinguish the updated fifth-edition rules as 5.5e and the 2014 rules as 5e; its March 2, 2026 editor’s note says both remain supported and compatible. Compatibility does not mean every character option or rule is interchangeable, so follow the group’s instructions.
The official 2024 D&D Free Rules article, dated September 3, 2024, describes those rules as a foundation for learning. It reports 12 base classes, 16 feats, 48 monsters, and 333 spells in the free rules as described in that article; those counts are not a description of the complete paid Player’s Handbook or every later update. The 2014 Basic Rules are also still available, according to the same article.

The Player’s Handbook compendium organizes play material around dice, abilities, D20 tests, proficiency, actions, social interaction, exploration, combat, damage and healing, and conditions. It also includes character creation. The free rules are a starting subset; a full handbook is an option for groups who want expanded rules and character choices.
How do you make a first character?
Follow the campaign’s instructions before choosing options. Character level and rules version affect what you can select, and the DM may specify available sources. A prebuilt character is a good choice if you would rather learn how play works before making those decisions.

For the 2024 Player’s Handbook, D&D Beyond describes character creation as choosing a class, determining origin, setting ability scores, choosing alignment, and filling in character details. The process was streamlined and rearranged for those rules; it is not a universal checklist for every table or rules version. See the 2024 character-creation guide for that specific process.
What do you need to start playing?
- A group of players and a DM.
- Agreement on the rules version and the adventure you will play.
- A character for each player, either newly made or prebuilt.
- A way to roll dice, such as physical polyhedral dice or a digital tool.
Check what the DM already provides before buying anything. Free official rules can be enough to begin if the DM has an adventure ready. For a packaged, guided physical introduction, the current Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set advertises prebuilt characters and is listed for 2–4 players plus a DM. Its physical set is one route, not a requirement.

There is also a digital Heroes of the Borderlands adventure pack, described in D&D Beyond’s digital setup guide as including campaign setup, premade characters, adventure materials, and D&D Beyond Maps support. The older Dragons of Stormwreck Isle Starter Set listing specifies a rulebook, adventure booklet, premade character sheets, and dice. D&D Beyond points customers to Heroes of the Borderlands for the latest rules, so treat Stormwreck Isle as an older starter product rather than the current default.

Ask friends, a local game store, or an online community whether a beginner-friendly session is available. D&D Beyond’s beginner guide points readers to its group-finder feature, including local game stores and professional DM matching. Before joining, ask which rules version the group uses, whether characters are supplied, and what you should bring.

Choose based on whether you already have a DM and adventure, how much guidance your group wants, whether you want to make characters, and whether you are playing in person or digitally. Check the group’s rules and supplied materials before purchasing anything.
