How to Play Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School in Local Co-op

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School supports two-player local split-screen co-op. You and a partner can play on the same device, and the developer has also announced a switch between split-screen and a widescreen view. The free Steam demo contains the first chapter and supports split-screen couch co-op.

This is pre-release guidance. The full game is scheduled for November 2026, and the latest information available on October 13, 2026 did not document the final menu path, join button, controller requirements, or account requirements. Use the confirmed capabilities below as a planning guide, then check the released build for the exact prompts on your platform.

What local co-op supports

Local co-op means both players use the same computer or console while appearing in the same escape-room session. The sequel advertises split-screen play rather than requiring two separate copies or two remote locations. It also supports online co-op, so you can choose between a shared device and a remote partner.

Question Confirmed information
How many people can play locally? Two players. The Xbox listing labels local co-op as 2–2. Steam describes shared and split-screen co-op but does not advertise a larger local group.
What view is available? Split-screen is supported. Coin Crew Games says players can switch to a widescreen view, with the option intended to help people affected by motion sickness.
Is there a way to test it now? Yes. The free Steam demo includes the first chapter and supports split-screen couch co-op.
When is the complete game due? November 2026 is the stated release window. At the October 13, 2026 information date, the full game was listed as not yet available.

The listings establish a two-player local mode, not a four-player or larger couch mode. If you have more than two people, plan on rotating players or using the announced online mode rather than assuming additional local slots.

Before you start: release and platform context

Back 2 School is the sequel to Escape Academy. Do not use the original game’s setup instructions as proof that the sequel has identical menus, controller handling, or account requirements. The original also advertises local split-screen, but that does not establish how the sequel’s released build will ask a second player to join.

The available store information is provisional. Steam lists Coin Crew Games as developer and identifies a November 2026 planned release. An Epic listing advertises Windows and local co-op/split-screen. The Xbox sequel listing names Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and handheld play, and labels local co-op 2–2. These pages do not constitute a complete final platform matrix, so recheck the store page for the edition you intend to use after launch.

How to try local co-op in the Steam demo

The demo is the only publicly described way to try the sequel’s couch mode before the full release. The following procedure separates actions confirmed by the listing from details that still depend on the final interface.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School page in Steam. Install the free demo rather than assuming that ownership of the original Escape Academy grants access to the sequel.
  2. Use the demo’s first-chapter scope as your test. The demo contains the first chapter, not the complete campaign. Reaching the end of that chapter is therefore not evidence that later rooms or the final progression system are available.
  3. Prepare the same device for two players. The public materials do not state a required controller model, keyboard arrangement, number of input devices, or whether a particular platform accepts mixed inputs. Have the inputs supported by your chosen device available, but wait for the released instructions before treating any specific combination as mandatory.
  4. Launch the demo and select its local or split-screen option when it is presented. Split-screen couch co-op is confirmed, but the announcement does not publish the final menu wording or location. Do not rely on an assumed sequence such as pressing a particular face button to join.
  5. Follow the on-screen join prompt for the second player. The exact button, key, or confirmation step has not been documented. If the demo build uses a different prompt from the launch version, the released game’s instructions take precedence.
  6. Enter the first chapter together. Coin Crew Games describes players entering escape rooms together, which is the intended local-play structure. The announcement does not promise that every menu, tutorial, or future chapter will behave identically to the demo.
  7. Check the view setting once both players are active. The developer has announced a switch between split-screen and widescreen views. The final menu path and whether the demo exposes the toggle were not specified, so look for the setting in the build rather than expecting a named location.

These steps tell you what the demo is intended to demonstrate without inventing an unverified button layout. If a prompt differs from this outline, use the control instructions shown by the current build and consult the platform’s support page.

Split-screen and widescreen: when to use each

Split-screen gives each player a portion of the display while both remain in the same room. That layout is the explicitly advertised couch mode and is the sensible first choice when both players need to inspect separate areas at once.

The developer has also promised a widescreen view switch. The stated reason is motion sickness: some players find a fixed split-screen divider uncomfortable, while a shared wider view can be easier to tolerate. The announcement does not explain whether widescreen keeps both characters visible at all times, how the camera frames the room, or whether one player can change the setting independently. Treat it as a display choice for the whole local session until the released interface says otherwise.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Coin Crew Games’ wording is precise: players will have the option to switch between split-screen and widescreen views if motion sickness affects them. That is a design commitment, not a published keyboard shortcut or controller instruction. Test the option in a safe section of the demo and return to the mode that keeps both players comfortable and oriented.

How cooperation is described in the sequel

The sequel places both players in escape rooms together and expands the setting to a larger campus. The developer describes pinging as a coordination aid while partners explore that campus. A ping can therefore be useful when one player wants to draw attention to a location without stopping to describe it verbally.

The cited announcement does not document the ping button, whether pinging is available in every room, or whether the demo includes the feature. Do not assign a keyboard key or controller button based on the original game or on another platform. Use the control legend shown by the current build once it is released.

For a local pair, agree on simple communication before starting a puzzle: say which room or object you are examining, announce when you have changed a switch or picked up an item, and confirm before one player moves on. Those habits are practical ways to use the shared-room design; they are not additional game requirements.

Local, online, and solo choices

Mode Where the partner is What the available information establishes Best fit
Local co-op On the same computer or console Two-player split-screen couch co-op is supported. A widescreen view switch is announced. Partners who can share one screen and want to play in the same room.
Online co-op On a separate device or location The sequel is advertised as supporting online co-op. The cited materials do not specify its final player count, invitation flow, or cross-play rules. Partners who cannot meet at the same device.
Solo play No second player The sources confirm the existence of co-op modes but do not describe solo-specific balancing or accessibility features. Players who want to explore without coordinating with a partner.

The key trade-off is physical setup: local mode keeps both people on one screen, while online mode removes the need to share hardware. Nothing in the published material establishes that one mode has better performance, a different puzzle set, or a different campaign length, so do not choose on the basis of an unverified technical advantage.

Platform notes you should verify

Store listings provide different levels of detail. Steam identifies shared and split-screen co-op and offers the first-chapter demo. Epic advertises Windows support with local co-op/split-screen. The Xbox listing identifies Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and handheld play and gives the local mode a 2–2 label.

Those descriptions are useful confirmation that couch play is planned, but they do not answer every setup question. Platform pages can change as launch approaches, and a feature shown on one storefront may not describe another edition’s input or account flow. Check the exact store page for your hardware after the November 2026 release announcement and before buying specifically for local play.

Cost and scope of the demo

The Steam demo is free, so it is the lowest-cost way to test whether the announced couch format suits your household. It is still a limited sample: only the first chapter is identified, and no source promises access to the full campaign, every campus area, or every communication feature. Treat a successful demo session as confirmation that the mode works for your setup, not as a preview of the game’s total length or puzzle variety.

There is no confirmed game-specific accessory, boxed edition, dedicated controller, printed guide, or other purchase required for local play. The published listings also do not establish a particular controller model. Avoid buying hardware solely because a generic couch-game recommendation claims it is mandatory; wait for the platform’s final input requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Planning around the two-player limit

Because the Xbox listing uses the explicit 2–2 local label and no storefront advertises a larger couch group, organize the session for exactly two active players. A third person can watch, offer suggestions, or take a turn between rooms, but there is no confirmed three- or four-player local slot to rely on. Online co-op is the alternative for partners who cannot share the same device, although its final player count and invitation rules remain unspecified.

What is still unconfirmed

Because the full game had not released at the latest information date, the following details should not be presented as established facts:

  • The exact title-screen path for creating a local session.
  • The button, key, or menu action that adds player two.
  • Whether two controllers are required, or whether keyboard-and-controller combinations are accepted.
  • Which controller models and operating-system input layers are supported on Windows.
  • Whether local play requires separate platform accounts, guest profiles, or an online connection.
  • Whether the widescreen toggle appears in the demo and where it sits in the final menus.
  • The control used for pinging and the rooms or modes in which pinging is available.
  • Any final cross-play, save-sharing, or progression rules between local and online sessions.

These are release-day verification items, not reasons to assume local co-op is absent. The core capability is announced; the operational details are simply not published yet.

Release-day checklist for a smooth couch session

  1. Confirm you are opening the sequel. The original Escape Academy and Back 2 School are separate products with separate listings.
  2. Read the current platform description. Look for the local co-op label on the edition you plan to use, especially if you are choosing between Windows, Xbox, or a handheld version.
  3. Check the game’s support or control page. Use it to confirm the accepted input devices, player-two join action, and any account or network requirement instead of relying on an older guide.
  4. Start with the demo if it remains available. Its first chapter is a low-risk way to see whether your hardware and display are comfortable before committing to the full campaign.
  5. Test the display mode before a long session. Try split-screen first, then the announced widescreen option if motion sickness is a concern. Keep the mode that is comfortable for both players.
  6. Agree on communication. The campus is described as sprawling, and pinging is intended to help partners coordinate. Decide how you will call out rooms, objects, and discoveries if the on-screen ping control is not obvious.

A second-player prompt is not visible

Do not assume a universal join button. Check the released control guide, pause menu, or platform support notes for the exact input action. The pre-release announcement does not publish one.

Your input devices do not work together

The available materials do not establish a controller count or mixed-input policy. Verify the final requirements for your platform and update the game before concluding that the local mode itself is unavailable.

The display feels uncomfortable

Try the announced widescreen view if the build exposes it. The developer specifically connects that option with motion-sickness concerns; the final location of the setting remains a release-day detail.

The store page lists a different platform feature set

Use the listing for your exact edition. The currently described Windows, Steam, Epic, Xbox, and handheld information is not a complete final matrix, and one platform’s wording should not be treated as a guarantee for another.

Bottom line for couch players

Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School is planned as a two-player local co-op game with split-screen support, an announced widescreen alternative, and a free Steam demo covering the first chapter. You can plan a same-device session now, but you cannot responsibly rely on a specific join button, controller arrangement, menu path, or account requirement until the November 2026 release is available. Use the demo to test the concept, then verify the launch build’s platform-specific instructions before starting the full campaign.

Do I need two controllers?

No final controller count, model requirement, keyboard arrangement, or mixed-input policy has been published. Check the released build and your platform’s support notes before buying or configuring hardware.
