Yes, the ASUS ROG Ally can play many installed games without Wi-Fi—but not every game is offline-ready. The Ally is a Windows gaming PC, so offline access depends on the individual game, its launcher, DRM, account license, and whether it requires online services. Before traveling, launch each game online, configure the relevant launcher, then test it with the Ally already disconnected.
What “offline” means on the ROG Ally
Installing a game only puts its files on the Ally. It does not guarantee that the game can authenticate, load a save, or run without contacting a server.

- Installed locally: The game files are stored on the Ally or a supported microSD card.
- Offline-capable: The launcher and game can start without an active connection.
- Online-only: The game requires a server for login, gameplay, or world simulation.
- Cloud gaming: The game is streamed, so it always requires internet access.
- Subscription-based: Access can depend on an active subscription, catalog availability, and a successful license refresh.
ASUS lists the Ally as supporting major PC storefronts and launchers, including Steam, Xbox and PC Game Pass, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, EA App, and GOG Galaxy. ASUS also cautions that not every game or game mode supports offline play. See the ASUS offline-play guide and ROG Ally FAQ.
Prepare the Ally before disconnecting
- Charge the Ally and install pending Windows updates.
- Update each launcher and every game you plan to play.
- Download the complete game, including required DLC, redistributables, shaders, and language packs.
- Sign in to the relevant launcher and enable its remembered-login option when available.
- Launch every game once while online.
- Reach the main menu and load an existing save.
- Create a manual local save if the game supports one.
- Enable the launcher’s offline mode or offline permissions.
- Turn on Airplane mode or switch off Wi-Fi.
- Test-launch every title while disconnected.
Do not treat a game as travel-ready until it has passed that final test. A first-launch activation, external launcher, DRM check, or missing update can prevent an apparently installed game from starting.

How to play Steam games offline
- Connect the Ally and open Steam.
- Sign in and make sure Remember me is enabled.
- Confirm the game is fully downloaded and updated.
- Launch it once online, then exit normally.
- Open the Steam menu.
- Select Go Offline.
- Choose Restart in Offline Mode if Steam prompts you.
- With the Ally still disconnected, launch the game again.
Steam’s official Offline Mode supports compatible games without an active Steam Network connection. It does not bypass a game’s own online requirement. A Steam purchase may also open EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Games Launcher, 2K Launcher, or another external service. In that case, the external launcher’s authentication and DRM determine whether offline play works.
Steam Cloud will not synchronize while offline. Any saves made during the trip remain local until the Ally reconnects.
How to play Epic Games Store games offline
- Open Epic Games Launcher while connected.
- Click your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Enable Enable Offline Mode Browsing.
- Confirm the game is completely installed.
- Launch the game once online.
- Disconnect the Ally and open Epic Games Launcher again.
- Launch the game while offline.
Epic says Offline Mode is limited to eligible installed single-player games. Its support documentation notes that online multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and other online services may be unavailable, and that not every title supports offline mode.

Xbox and PC Game Pass require more careful preparation because offline access depends on the Microsoft account, Windows device permissions, subscription status, game license, and the individual title.
- Connect the Ally to the internet.
- Open the Microsoft Store app.
- Click the profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Open Settings.
- Turn on Offline Permissions.
- Open each Xbox, Microsoft Store, or Game Pass game you want to use offline.
- Launch each one successfully while online, then close it.
- Enable Airplane mode and test the games again.
According to ASUS, only one Windows device per Microsoft account can have the offline-device designation, and that designation can be changed only three times per year. ASUS also states that purchased Xbox and Microsoft Store games and Game Pass games can be played offline on a logged-in Windows handheld when the game was launched within the previous 14 days. Treat that as an ASUS-described condition rather than a universal guarantee: Microsoft licensing rules, account status, subscription plans, regions, and individual games can vary.

The game must still be owned or included in the active Game Pass plan. A title may leave the catalog, a subscription may expire, or the game may invoke EA App, Ubisoft Connect, or another launcher. PC Game Pass also requires Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or later according to the Xbox PC Game Pass page. Cloud gaming is streaming and cannot work offline.
EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, and GOG
| Launcher | Preparation | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| EA App | Sign in online, update the game, launch it once, then use the EA App menu’s Go Offline option. | Game-specific DRM and EA-account requirements may block some titles. |
| Ubisoft Connect | Sign in, remain logged in, launch the game online, then choose Go Offline or disconnect and test automatic offline mode. | Behavior varies by game, DRM, and storefront. Steam copies may still require Ubisoft Connect. |
| Battle.net | Sign in and update while online, launch the game once, then select Continue Offline if offered after disconnecting. | Only selected games support useful offline functionality; live-service games generally do not. |
| GOG Galaxy | Sign in and test the game once. For the most dependable disconnected setup, use the standalone installer for a DRM-free title. | DRM-free distribution does not make a game offline-capable if the game itself needs servers. |
GOG is often the strongest choice for planned offline gaming because many releases are DRM-free. However, check the individual game: online multiplayer, server authentication, or server-dependent progression can still require a connection. Visit GOG for the store’s current game information.

The proper pre-trip offline test
To reproduce the conditions of a flight or remote trip:
- Finish all downloads and updates.
- Close the game and its launcher completely.
- Turn on Airplane mode, or turn Wi-Fi off.
- Wait several seconds.
- Open the launcher while the Ally is already offline.
- Start each intended game.
- Load a save and verify that controls, audio, and local progression work.
Also test the less demanding scenario of disconnecting after the launcher is open. The first test is more meaningful because it proves the launcher can start without relying on a recently completed online authentication.
What will not work offline?
- Cloud gaming: Streamed games require a live connection.
- Online multiplayer: Matchmaking, online co-op, competitive modes, leaderboards, friends lists, and live events will be unavailable.
- Always-online games: Some titles require a server even for parts of single-player mode.
- Cloud saves: Saves cannot synchronize until the Ally reconnects.
- Third-party launchers: The storefront where you bought the game does not necessarily control its offline authentication.
- First-launch or DRM activation: A game may need an online activation after installation or a significant update.
- Subscription access after a license change: A Game Pass title may stop working if the subscription ends or the game leaves the catalog.
When you reconnect after playing offline, a launcher may find both a local save and an older cloud save. Read the timestamps and choose deliberately; do not automatically overwrite the newer local progress with the cloud copy.

Troubleshooting offline failures
“This game cannot be started in Offline Mode”
Reconnect, update the launcher and game, launch the title successfully online, close it normally, select the launcher’s explicit offline mode, and disconnect again. If it still fails, check whether it uses an external launcher, always-online DRM, or a server-dependent mode. Steam specifically warns that a title can appear ready while still requiring updates, an active connection, or an external launcher; see Steam’s Offline Mode support page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn Epic game does not appear offline
Verify that Enable Offline Mode Browsing is on, the game is fully installed, and the title supports Epic’s Offline Mode. If it opens another launcher, test that launcher separately. Epic confirms that Offline Mode does not support every game.
A Game Pass title refuses to start
Reconnect and check that the Microsoft account is signed in, Offline Permissions are enabled, the subscription is active, and the game remains in the catalog. Launch the title online again, then repeat the Airplane mode test. For an important trip, keep an owned Steam or DRM-free GOG game as a fallback.
The game launches but a save is missing
Before traveling, load an existing save and create a new manual save while online. If it is missing offline, the game may depend on cloud storage, a different Windows account, a pending cloud conflict, or a different local save path.
The launcher controls do not work
The Ally is a Windows handheld PC rather than a console with universal launcher controls. Use the touchscreen, a Bluetooth or USB mouse, or a USB-C hub or dock. ASUS says Armoury Crate SE offers Desktop Mode gamepad-to-mouse functionality and can manage installed games in its Game Library. See the ASUS ROG Ally FAQ.

Choosing a reliable offline library
Prioritize games that meet most of these conditions:
- No always-online requirement.
- No mandatory third-party launcher.
- A successful first launch while online.
- Local save support.
- A single-player mode that works independently of servers.
- No expected license refresh during the trip.
- Installation on internal storage or a reliable, compatible microSD card.
- A successful Airplane mode test.
Best bets: DRM-free GOG games, supported Steam games without external launchers, and offline-friendly single-player titles with local saves.
Higher-risk choices: Game Pass titles, games using EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Games Launcher, or 2K Launcher, live-service games, games with restrictive DRM, recently updated titles, and games that rely heavily on cloud saves or server-side progression.
Storage and battery planning
Offline travel is also a storage and power problem. ASUS confirms that games can be installed to a microSD card, but use a reputable card with enough capacity and test the exact installation before relying on it. A low-quality or counterfeit card is a poor choice for a trip-critical library.

ASUS’s ROG Ally Premium Hard Case includes space for the 65W charger and microSD cards, while the ROG Gaming Charger Dock adds charging, display output, and USB connectivity. Neither accessory makes an online-only game playable without internet.
The most dependable offline setup
For the least risk, install one or two owned Steam games that use Steam Offline Mode natively, or DRM-free GOG games tested from a local installation. Add a tested Game Pass title for variety if you accept its account, subscription, catalog, and license conditions. Then keep a local save, a charged Ally, sufficient storage, and at least one fallback game.
The practical rule is simple: downloaded does not mean offline-ready. The only reliable confirmation is launching the exact game from an already-disconnected ROG Ally before you leave.
