Use an Invite Only Session to play GTA Online without sharing your lobby with unrelated players. From Story Mode, open the Pause Menu and go to Online > Find New Session > Invite Only Session. This is still GTA Online—not offline Story Mode—and some activities have participant requirements that a private lobby cannot bypass.
Start an Invite Only Session
- Enter GTA V Story Mode.
- Open the Pause Menu and select the Online tab.
- Select Find New Session.
- Choose Invite Only Session. Confirm that you want to leave the current session if prompted.
Rockstar’s Invite Only Session instructions, last updated May 26, 2026, say you must be in Story Mode to start a new Invite Only Session. The same support article says you leave your current session and enter a new private one. Menu wording can vary slightly by platform or change with updates.

What you can do in a private session
Business content and Sell missions
Rockstar’s July 26, 2022 Title Update 1.61 notes state that “Business content, including Sell missions, can now be accessed in private sessions.” That makes an Invite Only Session useful for doing compatible business activities away from public-lobby rivals. It does not establish that every business activity, mission, or job can be completed alone.
Activities with player-count requirements
A private session does not remove requirements for other participants. Rockstar’s Freemode Events information says many events need a minimum number of participants and that “Time Trials are not available in private or solo sessions.” It gives Hunt the Beast as an example requiring at least 10 players in the session. If an activity is unavailable or will not start, check whether it requires other players.

Invite Only versus a public session
| What matters | Public Freemode session | Invite Only session |
|---|---|---|
| Who shares the lobby | Other session participants may be present. | Private session rather than a public lobby. |
| Business content | Available activities depend on the content. | Rockstar says business content, including Sell missions, can be accessed in private sessions (Title Update 1.61, July 26, 2022). |
| Activity restrictions | Some activities require a minimum number of players. | Those requirements still apply; Rockstar excludes Time Trials from private or solo sessions. |
| Starting a new session | Can be joined as a public session. | Rockstar’s current support instructions document starting from Story Mode. |
Although Title Update 1.61 notes also say players can join different session types without returning to Story Mode first, Rockstar’s current support article documents the Story Mode route above for starting a new Invite Only Session. The update notes are historical documentation, not a platform-by-platform guide to every current menu.

An Invite Only Session lets you play GTA Online without unrelated players in the lobby; it does not turn the game into Story Mode or guarantee that every online activity is available for one person. Choose Story Mode if you want the offline single-player campaign. Choose an Invite Only Session when you want GTA Online’s compatible activities without public-lobby participants.
