Yes, but not with a simple, guaranteed install. Rockstar has no documented native PC VR mode for GTA V. The famous free option, Luke Ross’s R.E.A.L. VR mod, is abandoned and no longer reliably compatible with current GTA V builds. In 2026, the practical free route is generally GTAV Legacy plus a community-maintained compatibility tool—not GTA V Enhanced—and it is intended for Story Mode, not GTA Online.
Does the free GTA V VR mod still work?
The original R.E.A.L. VR mod converted GTA V Story Mode into stereoscopic, headset-rendered VR. Historically, it supported first- and third-person gameplay, head tracking, gamepad or keyboard-and-mouse controls, and Oculus and SteamVR headsets. It was never an official Rockstar VR release, and “100% VR” in the project description does not mean native hand-tracked gameplay.

Its status is the important part: Luke Ross announced on July 8, 2022 that the project would receive no further support or updates. The project and release information also warn that old releases no longer work correctly with current GTA V versions. Therefore, downloading the historical R.E.A.L. archive and applying an old tutorial to an up-to-date installation is unlikely to be a reliable solution.
Legacy or Enhanced?
Rockstar launched the PC Enhanced upgrade on March 4, 2025 and continues to document separate Enhanced and Legacy PC builds in its update notes. The abandoned R.E.A.L. mod was created for older GTA V versions and is not an officially supported Enhanced mod.

Current community VR projects and installers generally target GTAV Legacy. Enhanced compatibility should be treated as unverified unless a specific community release explicitly names your exact build and store version.
What you need
- A legitimate PC copy of GTA V.
- GTAV Legacy, unless the particular current VR project explicitly supports another edition.
- A Windows gaming PC capable of running GTA V and PC VR simultaneously.
- A PC VR headset, such as a Quest connected to the PC, Valve Index, Pimax headset, or compatible Windows Mixed Reality device.
- A working PC VR runtime, usually SteamVR or the headset manufacturer’s PC software.
- An Xbox-style controller. The classic setup is not designed around VR motion controllers.
- A clean or separately managed Story Mode installation with a backup before adding files.
Quest is not standalone for this method: the game runs on the PC and the headset acts as a PC VR display. Wired PC VR is the best first test because it removes wireless-network variables.
The practical free route in 2026
Look for a current, community-maintained Legacy compatibility project rather than assuming the original R.E.A.L. download is current. MrSurvivor’s VR HUB is one example of a guided community installer, but it is not an official successor to Luke Ross’s project and cannot guarantee compatibility on every system.

Before installing any community tool:
- Confirm that its release notes name GTAV Legacy and your store version—Steam, Epic, or Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Check the supported game build and the date of the latest release.
- Download only from the project’s genuine site or repository. Avoid cracked executables, unofficial downgrade packages, repacked archives, and random DLL downloads.
- Back up the clean game folder or use a separate Legacy installation for modded Story Mode.
- Do not assume that a new Script Hook release makes an old VR renderer compatible. Those are separate compatibility problems.
If a project does not clearly document your edition and build, stop there rather than forcing files into Enhanced.
Historical R.E.A.L. installation method
The following describes the original workflow for compatible releases. It is not a guarantee that the abandoned archive will work with a current installation.
- Launch GTA V normally on a monitor at least once, then exit.
- Open GTA V and set
Settings > Gamepad > Targeting Mode > Free Aim. - Set
Settings > Camera > First Person Head Bobbing > Off. - Set
Settings > Camera > First Person Third Person Cover > On. - Set
Settings > Camera > First Person Vehicle Hood > Off. - Extract the compatible mod archive into the game’s main installation directory—the folder containing
GTA5.exe. - Run the included
RealConfig.bat, where provided by that historical release, and select the appropriate runtime. - Connect the headset and start Oculus software or SteamVR as applicable.
- If using the Steam version, disable Use Desktop Game Theatre while SteamVR is active.
- Launch Story Mode and use a controller. Recenter the headset using the release’s documented hotkey or gesture.
The correct folder is determined by GTA5.exe, not by the storefront. Historical examples include:

Do not put the files in Documents, the Rockstar Launcher directory, the SteamVR folder, or an arbitrary mods folder unless the current installer specifically requires it.
What playing GTA V in VR is actually like
The headset supplies stereoscopic rendering and head-tracked view movement. A conventional controller handles walking, driving, weapons, menus, and most interaction. Expect a flat-screen game adapted to VR rather than a native VR port:
- There is no general promise of tracked hands, room-scale interaction, or physical weapon handling.
- Driving can feel especially intense because the camera moves quickly and the headset remains close to the action.
- Cutscenes may use a virtual-screen or dynamic presentation depending on the release.
- First-person camera settings and recentering have a major effect on comfort.
Historical documentation described Oculus, SteamVR, USB-connected Quest, and Air Link setups. Wireless methods such as Air Link, Steam Link, Virtual Desktop, or ALVR are runtime- and hardware-dependent; test wired operation first. An old warning about Virtual Desktop or ALVR should not be treated as a definitive judgment on every modern version.

Troubleshooting
The game launches flat instead of in VR
- Connect the headset before launching.
- Start the relevant Oculus software or SteamVR runtime.
- Confirm that mod files are beside
GTA5.exe. - Disable Steam Desktop Game Theatre.
- Remove other VR injectors and old DLLs, restore a clean installation, and retry.
The game crashes immediately
The most likely causes are an incompatible game build, Enhanced instead of Legacy, or a conflicting ASI, graphics, camera, trainer, or script mod. Verify the files, restore a clean copy, and do not keep swapping random DLLs. A Rockstar update may have invalidated the VR tool even if other mods still launch.
The headset is black or shows a flat image
- Check the active VR runtime and headset connection.
- Test wired PC VR before troubleshooting wireless streaming.
- Confirm that your transport method is supported by the specific community release.
- Disable conflicting injectors and retry from a clean Legacy installation.
Severe stutter or nausea
- Test seated first and avoid driving until comfortable.
- As a diagnostic step, disable motion smoothing or ASW.
- Lower headset resolution, antialiasing, shadows, and reflections.
- Prefer a stable frame rate over maximum graphics quality.
The camera or aiming feels wrong
Recheck the historical first-person camera settings, recenter the headset, and use the project’s documented configuration or hotkeys. Remove camera and FOV mods until the base VR installation works.
There is no audio
Set the headset as the Windows default output device, then restart the game. Changing Windows audio while GTA V is running may not be detected.

Can you use the mod in GTA Online?
Do not launch a modded GTA V installation into GTA Online. The established VR workflow is for Story Mode, and modified files can conflict with GTA Online’s integrity checks. Keep a separate clean Legacy installation or restore the backed-up game directory before going online. Never assume a visual-only change is safe from detection.

Hardware such as Meta Quest 3, Valve Index, and SteamVR can provide the PC VR side of the setup, while a wired Quest Link cable is useful for initial testing. None of them solves an incompatible GTA V build. Wireless tools such as Virtual Desktop should be treated as convenience upgrades, not compatibility fixes.
How to uninstall
- Remove only the files installed by the VR project, using its uninstall instructions where available.
- If you made a backup, restore the clean game directory instead.
- Verify the game files through Steam, Epic Games, or Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Restart the VR runtime if it continues opening GTA V in the wrong mode.
- Use the clean installation for GTA Online.
Stop troubleshooting when the tool cannot name support for your exact Legacy build, when it requires suspicious executable patches, or when repeated clean reinstalls still fail. At that point, the problem is probably version compatibility—not a missed checkbox in the headset software.
