How to Play Halo 4 Before Starting Halo: New Covenant: The Correct Order and Story Context

Play Halo 4’s main campaign first, then play Spartan Ops if you want the rest of Halo 4’s story. After that, you can start Halo: New Covenant—but treat it as a separate fan project, not the official sequel to Halo 4. Its Steam Workshop listing describes it as a campaign mod for Halo 3: ODST set after Halo 3, so Halo 4 is useful background rather than a required prequel.

If you only want the central Halo 4 arc, stop after the campaign. Spartan Ops is an optional episodic continuation that begins where the campaign concludes.

The short answer: campaign, then Spartan Ops, then New Covenant

  1. Halo 3 — optional refresher if you do not remember its ending.
  2. Halo 4 campaign — the central story and the correct starting point for Halo 4.
  3. Spartan Ops — optional, but the official episodic continuation of Halo 4’s narrative.
  4. Halo: New Covenant — a community campaign mod for Halo 3: ODST, set after Halo 3; check its current Workshop listing for installation and compatibility details.

Multiplayer and Forge do not need to be completed to understand either story. They are separate activities rather than chapters in the campaign sequence.

There are two different questions hidden in this title. One is the official Halo order: where does Halo 4 fit after Halo 3, and when should Spartan Ops be played? The other is whether a project named New Covenant is an official follow-up. It is not. Keeping those questions separate prevents a great deal of confusion.

What Halo 4 adds to the series

Halo 4 follows Halo 3 by nearly five years and begins the Reclaimer Saga. Microsoft’s November 5, 2012 launch announcement describes Master Chief and Cortana entering a mysterious new world, where they encounter an ancient threat capable of endangering humanity. That setup matters because Halo 4 introduces a new narrative direction instead of simply extending the previous trilogy’s conflict.

The campaign is the part you should play before anything else in Halo 4. It establishes the characters, setting, threat and emotional situation that Spartan Ops assumes you understand. You do not need to memorize every event from the earlier games, but knowing how Halo 3 ends makes the opening context easier to follow.

Microsoft’s announcement specifically places the game nearly five years after Halo 3, so it is not a side chapter occurring during the original trilogy. The time jump is part of the story’s design: the opening moves the series into a different phase and introduces an ancient danger rather than repeating the exact conflict of the earlier games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to remember from Halo 3

  • Halo 4 is a direct continuation of the post-Halo 3 status quo, not a side story occurring during the original trilogy.
  • The gap of almost five years is intentional; the opening is designed to move the series into a new phase.
  • Master Chief and Cortana remain the central perspective for the campaign, while the setting expands beyond the locations familiar from Halo 3.

A brief story recap is enough if you are replaying the series out of order. You do not need to insert Halo: New Covenant between Halo 3 and Halo 4, because the mod is not part of the official mainline chronology.

If you are completely new to Halo, playing Halo 3 first is the cleanest way to understand why Halo 4 begins where it does. If you have already played Halo 3 but remember only the broad outline, a recap can fill the gap. Neither option changes the recommendation to play Halo 4’s campaign before its own add-on story.

Why Spartan Ops comes after the campaign

Spartan Ops is an episodic cooperative story mode built around weekly-style missions. Xbox Wire’s November 17, 2020 description says its story-driven episodes pick up right where the main campaign concludes. That makes the sequence straightforward: finish the campaign before beginning Spartan Ops.

What Spartan Ops is

  • It is additional Halo 4 narrative content rather than a replacement for the campaign.
  • Its structure is episodic, so the story is delivered across mission episodes instead of one uninterrupted campaign.
  • It supports cooperative play, but you can approach it as story content even if you are primarily interested in the single-player arc.

The phrase “pick up right where the main campaign concludes” is the important ordering clue. Spartan Ops is not a tutorial, prequel or alternate opening. Starting it first can expose you to characters and circumstances that make more sense after the campaign’s ending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much of it should you play?

Play all of Spartan Ops if you want the fullest Halo 4 story available in the game. If your goal is only to understand the main campaign’s conclusion before moving to another project, you can stop after the campaign; Spartan Ops is officially connected, but it is not a prerequisite for launching Halo: New Covenant.

Do not start Spartan Ops before the campaign merely because it appears as a separate menu option. Its placement in the interface does not change the narrative order. You can also postpone it and return later without changing where Halo 4’s main campaign sits in the series.

For a group playthrough, the same order applies: complete the campaign, then use Spartan Ops for the cooperative continuation. Multiplayer matches, custom games and Forge can be played whenever you like because they do not function as story chapters.

Where Halo: New Covenant actually fits

The title can be misleading if you assume it is the next official Halo release. The Steam Workshop project page identifies Halo: New Covenant as a community campaign mod for Halo 3: ODST, with its story set after Halo 3. It is therefore a fan-made project using the ODST framework, not an official continuation of Halo 4 and not a numbered entry in the Reclaimer Saga.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That setting gives the mod a different relationship to the mainline games. It is connected to the Halo universe through its stated post-Halo 3 placement, but its name does not establish a canonical sequel relationship. The official Halo sequence and the Workshop project’s own story premise should be treated as separate tracks.

Do you need Halo 4 first?

No. Halo 4 can provide broader context about the modern-era Halo storyline, but the mod’s stated placement after Halo 3 does not make Halo 4 a requirement. If you are choosing an order based on the mod’s own setting, Halo 3 is the more directly relevant official game.

Why play Halo 4 anyway?

Playing Halo 4 first is still a sensible personal route when you want to experience the official series in release-era story order before trying a community interpretation of the universe. It also lets you experience the campaign-to-Spartan-Ops continuation without switching engines or timelines midway through Halo 4.

Keep the distinction clear: “before New Covenant” is a personal play-order preference, not an official chronology rule imposed by the Halo series. You can enjoy the mod after Halo 3, after Halo 4, or much later, provided you follow the mod’s current technical instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A spoiler-conscious play order

Use this route if you want the cleanest progression while limiting unnecessary detours:

  1. Play Halo 3 or read a reliable recap. This is optional, but it gives Halo 4’s opening situation proper context.
  2. Complete the Halo 4 campaign. Avoid starting Spartan Ops until the campaign credits or ending sequence have finished.
  3. Decide whether you want the continuation. Choose Spartan Ops if you want additional Halo 4 story; skip it if you only need the core campaign.
  4. Prepare the ODST mod separately. Open the current Steam Workshop listing for Halo: New Covenant and confirm its present installation, compatibility and dependency instructions.
  5. Start the mod after your Halo 4 stopping point. Treat it as an independent community campaign rather than assuming it resolves Halo 4’s plot.

This order avoids presenting Spartan Ops as an introduction to Halo 4 and avoids describing the mod as a sequel it is not.

There is no need to interrupt Halo 4 with the mod. Finish the official game’s campaign first, decide whether to continue through Spartan Ops, and only then change to the ODST-based project. That approach keeps the official narrative and the fan-made narrative easy to distinguish when you return to either one.

Ways to play Halo 4 today

Halo 4 is included in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC). Xbox Wire’s November 17, 2020 announcement identified PC access through Xbox Game Pass for PC, the Microsoft Store and Steam, and described MCC as optimized for Xbox Series X|S. Those were the access routes and service descriptions in that announcement; current storefront availability, pricing, edition contents and subscription terms can change, so verify them before purchasing or installing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Route What it provides Important service consideration
MCC on PC Halo 4 within the collection, with the PC storefront options identified in the 2020 Xbox Wire announcement Check the current Microsoft Store, Steam or subscription listing for present requirements and terms
MCC on newer Xbox consoles Halo 4 through the modernized collection; MCC was described as optimized for Xbox Series X|S Current console edition and online-service details should be confirmed in the live store listing
Original Xbox 360 version The standalone Halo 4 release, including campaign and Spartan Ops Legacy Xbox 360 online services were reduced or disabled on January 13, 2022
Used physical Xbox 360 copy A disc-based way to play the original version on compatible hardware Disc condition, resale availability and remaining service-dependent features vary

MCC is the least confusing route if you want a current platform rather than original Xbox 360 hardware. The standalone 360 copy remains relevant for collectors and players specifically seeking the original release, but it should not be treated as having the same online behavior as MCC.

Choose the route according to what you actually need. A solo player interested only in the campaign can prioritize access to a working copy and comfortable controls. A player who wants cooperative or online features should pay closer attention to whether the chosen version uses MCC’s current infrastructure or the legacy 360 services. Someone installing the Workshop project must also make sure the base ODST game and the mod’s stated platform requirements are available independently of Halo 4.

What changed for the Xbox 360 version

Halo Support states that Xbox 360 Halo online services were turned off or reduced on January 13, 2022. This affects the original 360 release and also affects backward-compatible play of that original game on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

The campaign and Spartan Ops remain available on the 360 version. Halo Support also lists custom games, Forge, split-screen, LAN and online squads among features that continue, while service-dependent functions are affected by the shutdown. The exact behavior depends on whether a feature requires the retired Xbox 360 service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MCC is not covered by that 360 sunset because it uses modernized services. Do not assume that a feature available in MCC will behave identically when you launch the original 360 game, or that backward compatibility restores every legacy online function.

What this means for your story order

The service change does not alter the narrative sequence. You can still play the Halo 4 campaign and Spartan Ops on the original release, but you should choose your platform with the service distinction in mind if cooperative or online features matter to you.

A physical 360 disc is therefore a viable way to experience the campaign, but it is not a guarantee of every historical online feature. Used-copy condition and availability vary, and the console itself must be compatible with the version you intend to run. MCC avoids that particular legacy-service distinction, though its own storefront, edition and subscription terms should still be checked at the time you buy or install it.

Installing the New Covenant mod without guessing

The available information establishes the project’s identity and setting, not a fixed installation procedure. Community Workshop projects can change their dependencies, supported game version and launch instructions, so use the current project page as the authority for setup.

  1. Find the current Steam Workshop entry titled Halo New Covenant.
  2. Read the project description for the supported Halo 3: ODST version, required files and any load-order instructions.
  3. Check the date of the latest update and any author notes about known issues.
  4. Install only through the method the project page currently specifies.
  5. Launch the required base game and verify that the mod appears before beginning a campaign save.

Do not infer compatibility from the fact that you played Halo 4 through MCC. The mod is described as an ODST campaign project, so its technical requirements must be confirmed independently.

Keep the setup process separate from the story-order decision. You may finish Halo 4 first and install the mod later; there is no reason to alter the official campaign order while troubleshooting a Workshop item. If the listing names a particular ODST edition, dependency or launch method, follow that current instruction rather than relying on an older guide.

Common order and terminology mistakes

  • Calling New Covenant the official sequel to Halo 4: its Workshop listing describes a community mod set after Halo 3.
  • Starting Spartan Ops first: the episodic story is designed to pick up after the main campaign.
  • Assuming Halo 4 is mandatory for the mod: the mod’s stated setting does not establish such a requirement.
  • Confusing MCC with the original 360 release: MCC uses modernized services, while the 360 version is affected by the January 13, 2022 service change.
  • Expecting current store terms to match a 2020 announcement: storefront prices, subscriptions and availability can change.
  • Looking for verified mod setup steps in Halo 4 documentation: installation belongs to the mod’s current Workshop instructions, not the official Halo 4 campaign menu.
  • Treating multiplayer or Forge as required story chapters: they are optional activities and do not need to be completed before Spartan Ops or the mod.
  • Assuming backward compatibility restores every old online feature: the original 360 service changes also affect backward-compatible play of that release.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to play Halo 4 before Halo: New Covenant?

No. The Workshop listing describes New Covenant as a Halo 3: ODST campaign mod set after Halo 3. Halo 4 is optional background, not a stated prerequisite.

What order should I play Halo 4 and Spartan Ops?

Play the Halo 4 campaign first, then Spartan Ops. Xbox Wire describes Spartan Ops as episodic story content that picks up where the main campaign ends.

Is Halo: New Covenant an official Halo game?

No. It is a community campaign mod. Do not describe it as the official sequel to Halo 4 or as a numbered Reclaimer Saga entry.

Should I play Halo 3 before Halo 4?

It is recommended for context but not mandatory. Halo 4 is set nearly five years after Halo 3, so a recap is also enough if you remember the earlier game only broadly.

Can I skip Spartan Ops?

Yes, if you want only the central Halo 4 campaign. Play it if you want the officially connected episodic continuation and the fullest Halo 4 story available in the game.

Do I have to play multiplayer or Forge?

No. Multiplayer, Forge, custom games and similar modes are separate activities, not required story chapters.

Can I play Halo 4 on Xbox 360 after the 2022 shutdown?

The campaign and Spartan Ops remain available. However, Xbox 360 online services were reduced or disabled on January 13, 2022, and the change also affects backward-compatible play of the original 360 release. MCC uses modernized services and is not covered by that sunset.

Bottom line for a first-time player

Finish Halo 4 first, add Spartan Ops if you want its official episodic follow-up, and then approach Halo: New Covenant as a separate Halo 3: ODST community campaign. That gives you the complete Halo 4 narrative without incorrectly treating a fan mod as the next official game.
