Everyone else opens a web browser on a phone, tablet, or computer, goes to jackbox.tv, enters the room code shown on the TV, and chooses a display name. No dedicated gamepad is needed for ordinary player answers, drawings, votes, or choices.
The host starts the game from the host device after the lobby is full. A single purchased copy is enough for the group; players joining from their phones do not each need to buy the Party Pack.

The basic setup in one minute
- Choose a host device. Install the Party Pack on a supported device, such as a Nintendo Switch in TV mode or a computer that can run the purchased edition.
- Put the host screen on the TV. Connect the host device to the TV or use another display arrangement that lets everyone see the game lobby and room code.
- Launch a game. Open the Party Pack and select the game you want to play. The game creates a lobby and displays a room code.
- Join from each personal device. On a phone, tablet, computer, or other internet-capable device with a compatible browser, open jackbox.tv.
- Enter the code and name. Type the room code from the TV, choose a display name, and join the lobby.
- Start when ready. When every player appears on the host screen, the host starts the game using the host device.
The TV is the shared game display. Each player’s browser is that player’s private controller. The browser page can collect typed answers, drawings, votes, selections, and a display name while the TV shows the common game state.
What you need before starting
One purchased Party Pack on a host device
Jackbox’s official setup guidance says only one person in the group needs to own a Jackbox product in order to host. The owner installs the Party Pack on the host device; the other participants join through their browsers. They do not need separate copies merely to enter the same game.

The exact edition, storefront, region, supported host platform, and current availability should be checked at purchase time. The practical requirement is that the host device can run the chosen Party Pack and send its game image to the TV.
A TV or other large shared display
The host screen must be visible to everyone. A Nintendo Switch edition is explicitly listed with TV mode, so a Switch connected to a television can run the host game in a living-room setup. A computer connected to the TV can fill the same role when the purchased Party Pack runs on that computer.
The TV does not run the phone controller page. It shows the lobby, prompts, timers, submitted content, and results generated by the host game. Keep the host screen visible throughout the session so players can see when to submit, vote, or wait.
One internet-capable browser per player
Players can use phones, tablets, or computers. Nintendo describes controller devices as those with a web browser supporting WebSockets and HTML5. The device also needs internet access to load the controller page and send inputs.
A dedicated console controller is not required for ordinary player actions. The host may still need the input device appropriate to its platform, such as the Switch controls or a keyboard and mouse, to open the Party Pack, select a game, and start the round.
How the phone controller works
The phone is not paired to the TV or to another player’s handset. It is a browser-based controller that connects to the running game through the room code. After joining, a player uses the page for the actions that game requests:
- Typing answers or other text.
- Drawing on a touch screen.
- Voting for a displayed option.
- Choosing from multiple choices or entering a response.
- Entering and displaying a player name.
The TV remains the authority for shared information: the room code, lobby roster, prompts, timers, submissions that are meant for everyone, scores, and the next instruction. A phone may show a private prompt or input field while the television shows the public portion of the round.
Because the controller is a web page, players can switch between supported device types. One person might use an iPhone or Android phone, another a tablet, and another a laptop, provided each browser is compatible and online.

Exact local-play procedure
1. Set up the host screen
Place the Switch dock, computer, or other supported host device where its video output reaches the TV. Select the correct TV input and confirm that the Party Pack’s menus are readable from the seating area. The host needs access to the platform’s own navigation controls before players join.
2. Open a specific game
Start the Party Pack, choose one of its included games, and wait for its lobby. Do not ask players to visit the controller site until the game has generated a room code; the code displayed by the active game is the credential for this session.
3. Have everyone visit the controller site
Each participant opens a browser and enters jackbox.tv. On the Switch listing, Nintendo describes this same flow as connecting to the “jackbox.tv” web address and entering the on-screen room code.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →4. Enter the room code exactly
Read the three-letter code or other code shown by the game and enter it on the controller page. A player who enters a code from a previous round, a different game, or a different host will not join the intended lobby.
5. Choose a display name
Each browser asks the player to provide a display name. Use names the group can recognize on the TV, especially when several people are in the same room or when remote participants are joining by screen share.
6. Check the lobby on the TV
The host should wait until every expected participant appears on the host screen. If a name is missing, have that player check the room code, browser connection, and spelling of the code before starting.
7. Start and follow the game prompts
The host starts the round from the host device. Players then use their individual browser pages for the requested input while watching the TV for shared instructions and results.

Choosing a Party Pack and understanding player counts
Party Packs do not all contain the same games or support the same number of players. Choose based on the kinds of activities your group wants—writing, drawing, voting, trivia, or rapid choices—and verify the player range for the specific game rather than assuming the whole pack has one limit.

| Game | Published player range | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Drawful | 3–8 players | Range listed for the game in Nintendo’s 2016 official product listing. |
| Lie Swatter | 1–100 players | Range listed for the game in Nintendo’s 2016 official product listing. |
Those figures apply to the games in the listed Party Pack edition and publication listing. They are not a complete, current player-count table for every Party Pack. Check the store listing or in-game information for the particular pack and game you intend to run.
Large groups
A game with a high published limit can let many people join from their own browsers, but the host still needs a display large enough for everyone to follow the round. For a mixed group, select a game whose minimum and maximum include the number of people who will actually play.
Different games in the same pack
Player limits can change from one included game to another. If a group outgrows the limit of the first game, returning to the pack menu and choosing another title may provide a different supported range; it does not increase the limit of the original game.

Using a Nintendo Switch as the host
The Nintendo Switch edition is the straightforward TV-oriented option when you want the console to run the Party Pack. Put the Switch in its dock, connect the dock to the TV, open the purchased Party Pack, and use the Switch controls for host navigation. Players still join through the browser workflow rather than pairing individual gamepads to the Switch.
In buying references, the product may be described as “Jackbox Party Pack Nintendo Switch.” Confirm that the edition you buy is the Switch edition and that the selected Party Pack contains the game your group wants. A purchase on one platform does not by itself establish access to editions sold for other platforms.
Using a computer as the host
A computer can host when the purchased Party Pack runs on that computer. Connect the computer to the TV, mirror or extend the display so the game is visible, and use the computer’s keyboard, mouse, or other normal navigation input for the host menus. Once the game is open, the players’ phones follow the same room-code process at jackbox.tv.
The computer is the host in this arrangement; the phones do not need the Party Pack installed. If the computer’s display is visible only to the host, players cannot reliably follow the shared prompts, so make the game window the screen everyone can see.
Playing remotely with screen sharing
Remote play uses the same two-channel design: the host runs the Party Pack and shares its game screen through a video-chat or streaming service, while each remote participant opens the controller page independently. Jackbox names Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, FaceTime, and Discord as workable services.

- The host launches the game and keeps the room code visible on the shared screen.
- The host starts a video call or stream and shares the window or display containing the game.
- Remote participants watch that shared screen and open jackbox.tv on a separate phone, tablet, or computer browser.
- Each participant enters the code shown in the shared game window and chooses a display name.
- The host waits for all names to appear in the game lobby, then starts the round.
A player can watch the shared game on a computer while using a phone as the controller, or watch on one device and use another compatible browser device for input. Keep the game window available while the call is running; closing or hiding it removes the information remote players need.
Remote-play practical checks
- Share the game display, not just the host’s camera, so the room code and prompts are legible.
- Ask participants to keep the controller page open while watching the call.
- When someone disappears from the lobby, have that person recheck the displayed code and their browser connection.
- Use recognizable display names so the host can identify who has joined before starting.
QR-code joining in Party Pack 9
Jackbox documents QR-code sign-in for Party Pack 9. When that QR code appears on the game screen, a phone camera can scan it, open Jackbox.tv, and populate the room code. This removes manual code entry for that particular flow.
QR availability can vary by game and Party Pack. Treat the code displayed on the TV as the general joining method: if no QR code appears, open jackbox.tv manually and type the room code.

Accounts, downloads, and subscriptions
No Jackbox account for a normal purchase
Jackbox support says a Jackbox account is not required for purchased games. Players do not create an account just to enter a room; they provide a display name on the controller page for that session.
No recurring charge for purchased games
Normally purchased games do not carry a recurring Jackbox charge. Amazon Luna access is described separately as a subscription service, so cloud access through that service should not be confused with owning a Party Pack on a supported host device.
What the browser remembers
Jackbox support says player history is stored through cookies on the controller device. A player may therefore see history associated with that browser device, but this does not turn the browser into a Jackbox account or replace the room code needed to join a new session.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting by symptom
The room code is rejected
- Read the code from the currently running game, not from an earlier round or a different host.
- Confirm that every player is visiting jackbox.tv, not a search result or another page.
- Have the player refresh the controller page and enter the newly displayed code again.
- If the game has returned to a menu, launch the game again and use the new lobby code.
A player cannot join the lobby
- Check that the phone, tablet, or computer has internet access.
- Try a browser that supports WebSockets and HTML5, the technologies Nintendo identifies for controller devices.
- Make sure the player has entered a display name and completed the join screen.
- Ask the host to wait for the name to appear before starting.
The host can navigate menus but players cannot enter answers
The host’s platform controller and the players’ browser controllers serve different jobs. Use the Switch controls or computer input for host menus, and have each player use the browser page for answers, drawings, votes, and choices. A player should not need to pair a gamepad for those ordinary inputs.
The TV shows the game, but a remote player sees nothing
In a remote session, the host must share the display containing the running game, not merely join the call with a camera. The remote player watches that shared screen and uses a separate browser device for the private controller page.

The game starts before everyone is ready
The host controls when the round begins. Return to the lobby or wait at the current join screen, compare the names visible on the TV with the intended player list, and start only after the missing participant has joined.
Local or remote: which arrangement fits?
| Arrangement | Host screen | Player controller | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living-room local play | Switch or computer connected to the TV | Phone, tablet, or computer browser | Everyone is in the same room and can see one shared display. |
| Remote play | Host’s game window shared through a supported video-chat or streaming service | Separate phone, tablet, or computer browser for each participant | Participants are in different locations. |
| Mixed setup | TV for people with the host plus an online shared screen for remote players | Each person uses an independent browser device | Some players are local and others join online. |
The purchase and room-code workflow stays the same in all three arrangements. What changes is how participants see the host game.
Common questions answered before game night
Does everyone need to buy Jackbox?
No. One person needs to own and run the Jackbox product as the host. Other players join that host’s lobby through their browsers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do I need a controller for Jackbox?
Not for normal player inputs. A phone, tablet, or computer browser handles typing, drawing, voting, and selections. The host still needs the input method required to operate the host platform.
What website do players use?
Players use jackbox.tv, then enter the room code shown by the active game and choose a display name.
Can people play from different locations?
Yes. The host shares the game screen through a video-chat or streaming service, and remote players independently join the room from their browsers.
Can a laptop be the controller?
Yes, if its browser supports the required WebSockets and HTML5 technologies and it has internet access. The laptop can also be the host when it runs the purchased Party Pack and is connected to the TV.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs the QR code required?
No. QR joining is documented for Party Pack 9, but the room code displayed on the game screen remains the general method across games and packs.
