Play Magneto as a team-protecting Vanguard: pressure from range with Iron Volley, shield yourself or an ally when damage is coming, then use the Iron Rings those shields build to fire Mag-Cannon. Use Metallic Curtain briefly to block projectile threats, and time Meteor M for moments when enemies are firing into its absorption field—release it before it overloads.
What Magneto does best
Magneto combines ally protection with ranged pressure. The official Marvel Rivals character profile describes him as shielding allies and striking at foes. In practice, work around your team and nearby cover rather than treating him as a character who should charge into open sightlines: protect the teammate under pressure, use your projectile-blocking tools to manage incoming fire, and look for openings to return damage.

The loop that ties his kit together is protection into offense. Metal Bulwark and Iron Bulwark can turn absorbed damage into Iron Rings; Mag-Cannon spends those rings. That makes shielding a teammate or yourself useful both defensively and as preparation for a stronger shot.

Iron Volley: pressure from range
Iron Volley fires magnetic orbs that create a spell field, and that field expands as the projectile travels. Use it to apply area pressure from range; a longer travel path gives the field more room to grow. It is not the same resource-based shot as Mag-Cannon: Iron Volley is for applying pressure, while Mag-Cannon cashes in stored Iron Rings.

Metal Bulwark and Iron Bulwark: choose who needs protection
- Metal Bulwark shields an ally. Use it when a teammate is exposed or taking incoming damage.
- Iron Bulwark shields Magneto. Use it when you are the one drawing pressure.
Both shields convert absorbed damage into Iron Rings. Since the rings come from damage absorbed, shielding is most valuable when it protects against a real threat; do not assume an unused shield automatically prepares a full-strength cannon shot.
Mag-Cannon: spend rings when the shot matters
Mag-Cannon converts Iron Rings into a projectile. More stored charges increase its damage, and a full charge adds knockback. Build rings through shield absorption, then fire when an enemy is exposed or when the knockback can help disrupt their position. Avoid spending rings without considering whether a stronger shot would be more useful moments later.

Metallic Curtain: block projectiles, then let it recover
Metallic Curtain blocks incoming projectiles but has a finite energy pool that drains while the curtain is active. Raise it to cross a dangerous sightline or blunt a projectile volley; release it once the immediate threat passes so its energy can recover. Holding it up without a clear projectile threat spends the resource without gaining the same protection value.
Magnetic Descent: control a fall
Hold the jump input to slow Magneto’s fall. This helps control a descent from elevated ground, but it is not a rapid escape tool; plan the route down rather than relying on it to get out of danger instantly.
Meteor M: absorb committed projectile fire
Meteor M absorbs enemy projectiles within its range to increase the ultimate’s power. It can charge for up to five seconds and will self-destruct if overloaded. Use it when enemies are committed to firing into the absorption field and there is a useful area to target, then release before overload. Waiting longer is not automatically better if the extra charging leaves the ultimate at risk of self-destruction.
How to make decisions during a fight
- Find a position with cover and a useful line of sight. Magneto’s tools let him protect and pressure, but they do not make open exposure harmless.
- Use Iron Volley to apply ranged area pressure. Its field expands as the projectile travels, so use distance to create a larger field when the situation allows.
- Choose the shield based on who is threatened. Use Metal Bulwark for an ally and Iron Bulwark for yourself; absorbed damage generates Iron Rings.
- Spend rings with Mag-Cannon when you have a meaningful target. More charges raise damage, while a full charge adds knockback.
- Use Metallic Curtain for a specific projectile threat. Raise it to block fire across a dangerous angle, then release it to stop draining its finite energy.
- Look for a good Meteor M window. Absorb projectiles when enemies are firing into range and release before the ultimate overloads.

How Magneto’s options differ
| Choice | What it does | Best use | Resource or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Volley | Magnetic orbs create a spell field that expands as the projectile travels. | Ranged area pressure. | Field size grows with travel distance. |
| Mag-Cannon | Fires a projectile using Iron Rings; more charges increase damage and a full charge adds knockback. | Spend stored rings on an exposed target or a useful knockback. | Requires rings, which shields generate when they absorb damage. |
| Metal Bulwark | Shields an ally and can build Iron Rings through absorbed damage. | Protect a teammate taking pressure. | Builds rings only as damage is absorbed. |
| Iron Bulwark | Shields Magneto and can build Iron Rings through absorbed damage. | Protect yourself when you are under pressure. | Builds rings only as damage is absorbed. |
| Metallic Curtain | Blocks incoming projectiles. | Cross a dangerous sightline or blunt a projectile volley. | Its finite energy drains while active. |
| Meteor M | Absorbs nearby enemy projectiles to increase ultimate power. | Use against committed projectile fire when there is a useful target area. | Can charge for up to five seconds, but overload causes self-destruction. |
Team-ups and the October 2026 balance timing
Magneto’s team-up effects have dated adjustments, so check the live in-game team-up display for the version you are playing.
- Scarlet Witch: The official August 7 balance post says the enhanced Metallic Chaos projectile hit adds a minor launch-up effect. Read the official balance updates.
- Gambit: The same August 7 post changes the Gambit and Magneto team-up spell-field launch-up frequency from once every 0.5 seconds to once every 1 second. The adjustment reduces how often that effect triggers.
- Emma Frost: An official October 6 announcement says Magnetic Resonance’s projection damage ratio will rise from 45% to 50%, and its maximum duration from 5 seconds to 6 seconds. Those values are scheduled for the October 9, 2026 update; they are upcoming, not live as of the October 8, 2026 research cut-off.
The latest already-effective official update identified in the source material was published September 30 and began October 1; it contained no Magneto adjustment. Because a Magneto team-up change was announced for October 9, verify abilities and team-ups in game after that update. Exact ability details can change, so the live display is the safest reference when a value matters.
