As of October 17, 2026, Maldhalla is not yet available on Steam. Its store listing gives it an October 16, 2026 release date, but Steam Deck compatibility is still marked Unknown. The listing does provide a native SteamOS/Linux build, so the correct plan is to try that build first after launch, then use Proton only if the native path fails or the game is presented as a Windows build.

What Maldhalla’s Steam listing tells Steam Deck owners

The available information supports a straightforward first attempt, but not a performance guarantee. Maldhalla lists SteamOS and Linux as supported targets and specifies a relatively modest hardware floor. Steam has not yet assigned a Deck badge, and no Maldhalla-specific frame-rate, battery-life or thermal testing is published. That means you can prepare the installation and troubleshooting path now, but you should not treat any unverified FPS target or graphics preset as authoritative.

Why Steam shows “Unknown” compatibility

Steam Deck badges are Valve’s compatibility assessments, not a simple reading of the developer’s minimum specifications. An Unknown label means Valve has not published a result for the current store build. It does not establish that Maldhalla will fail, and it does not establish that the game will meet a particular frame-rate or control standard.

The absence of a badge is especially important for a game that has only just reached its listed release window. Ratings can change after Valve tests a build or after the developer ships updates. Until that happens, judge the game from the build actually installed on your Deck rather than from assumptions based on its RAM or storage numbers.

Install and launch Maldhalla safely

Use this sequence once Steam makes the product available. It keeps the first test close to the configuration the developer lists and follows Steam’s basic stability guidance.

  1. Install from Steam. Open the game’s store page or Library entry, start the installation and allow the download to finish completely.
  2. Let SteamOS finish pending work. Wait for SteamOS updates, game updates and any post-install processing to complete before judging launch behavior.
  3. Restart the Deck. If the game does not start cleanly or behaves inconsistently, perform a full restart before changing compatibility settings. Steam Support identifies updating and restarting as first troubleshooting steps for persistent stability or performance issues.
  4. Open Maldhalla from Library. Start with the default launch option. Do not force Proton before testing the listed native SteamOS/Linux route.
  5. Check the display target. Keep the Deck at its normal 1280×800 or 1280×720 target for the initial run. This is the resolution range Valve uses in its Deck compatibility guidance.
  6. Reach the game’s settings and controls. Confirm that text is readable and that the built-in controls respond before attempting performance changes.

If the first launch takes longer than expected, allow a reasonable amount of time for initial setup and do not repeatedly interrupt it. If it remains stuck, exit the game, restart the Deck and try one clean launch before switching variables.

Start with the native SteamOS/Linux build

The store listing explicitly supplies SteamOS/Linux requirements, so a native build is the most direct starting point. A native launch avoids adding a Windows compatibility layer before you know one is needed. It also gives you a clear baseline for later troubleshooting: if the native build works, Proton is unnecessary; if it fails, you have a documented reason to test the alternative path.

Native-build baseline

  • Use the current SteamOS release and the fully updated game.
  • Leave graphics options at their defaults for the first session.
  • Use 1280×800 or 1280×720 rather than immediately lowering the output.
  • Play long enough to encounter the activity that normally causes trouble, such as a busy scene or a transition, instead of judging only the title screen.
  • Record whether the problem is failure to launch, a crash, visible stutter, delayed controls, unreadable text or another specific symptom.

This baseline is more useful than changing several settings at once. If you alter the resolution, quality preset and compatibility tool together, you cannot tell which change affected the result.

When to force Proton

Proton is a compatibility option for running a Windows build on SteamOS. It is not automatically a speed boost, and there is no Maldhalla-specific Proton version established by the available information. Use it when the game is presented as a Windows build, when the native route fails, or when Steam’s compatibility tooling indicates that a Proton environment is appropriate.

Force a Proton tool for this game

  1. Highlight Maldhalla in your Steam Library.
  2. Open the game’s Properties.
  3. Select Compatibility.
  4. Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  5. Choose an installed Proton tool, apply the setting and launch the game.

Test one tool at a time. If a selected version produces a worse result, return to Properties > Compatibility and change or remove the forced selection. Do not describe a Proton choice as “the best version” without recording the game build, SteamOS version and observed behavior that support that conclusion.

Native versus Proton: what to compare

If both paths launch, compare them under the same resolution and in the same game scene. Useful observations include launch reliability, frame-time consistency, average and 1% low frame rate, battery drain, shader-compilation stutter, controller behavior, text legibility at 1280×800 or 1280×720, and any multiplayer or middleware feature that matters to you. No published comparison currently supplies those Maldhalla results, so they must be measured on the Deck rather than inferred from the compatibility label.

Performance tuning that does not invent a target

There is no sourced Maldhalla benchmark to justify a fixed FPS target, battery estimate, thermal limit or recommended preset. The practical approach is to establish a stable baseline, identify the symptom and make the smallest change that addresses it.

1. Keep the default resolution first

Use 1280×800 or 1280×720 initially. Valve’s Deck guidance expects games to support the default resolution, provide good default settings and keep text legible. Lowering resolution can reduce rendering work, but it can also make menus and game text harder to read. Only lower it after the frame-time graph shows sustained stutter or controls feel delayed during the same repeatable scene.

2. Change one graphics option at a time

If the game exposes quality controls, start with its defaults. Lower the option most directly associated with the symptom, apply the change, then repeat the same scene. Keep a short note of the setting and result. This prevents a temporary improvement from being mistaken for a general recommendation.

3. Use the frame-time graph to diagnose stutter

A smooth average frame rate can hide uneven frame delivery. Watch the frame-time graph while reproducing the problem. Brief spikes may indicate a one-time loading or shader event; repeated spikes during ordinary movement point to a persistent workload or compatibility issue. Do not convert a single short session into a universal performance claim.

  • 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
  • OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

4. Check input and text separately

Performance is not only a number. A game can appear fluid while controls feel delayed, or run acceptably while text is too small at the chosen output. Test menus, movement, camera or cursor control and any text-heavy screen at the same resolution you intend to use.

5. Recheck after updates

Keep SteamOS and Maldhalla current before advanced tuning. A game update or SteamOS change can alter launch behavior, shader compilation or controller handling, making an old setting unnecessary or counterproductive.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom First action Next controlled test
The game will not start Confirm SteamOS and the game finished updating, then restart the Deck. Try the native SteamOS/Linux launch. If the installed entry is a Windows build or native launch still fails, test a forced Proton tool through Properties > Compatibility.
It starts, then crashes or freezes Restart and reproduce the issue without changing several settings. Check whether the failure is tied to one scene, transition or menu. Compare native and Proton paths separately if both are available.
Controls feel delayed Check the frame-time graph while repeating the same action. Return to default graphics settings and native resolution; lower one quality setting only if repeated spikes coincide with the delay.
Stutter appears during play Update SteamOS and the game, then restart. Determine whether spikes are one-time loading events or repeat during normal movement. Record the build and settings before comparing another compatibility path.
Text is difficult to read Return to 1280×800 or 1280×720 and inspect the game’s own display and UI options. Prefer a readable output over an unmeasured resolution reduction. Note whether the issue occurs in menus, subtitles or gameplay text.
A Proton test is worse Remove the forced tool or select a different installed tool. Re-test the native route. Proton is not inherently faster, so keep it only when it improves the specific behavior you measured.

If problems persist after updates and a restart, Steam Support also documents opting into the Steam Deck Beta to check whether a newer Steam change addresses the issue. Treat that as a troubleshooting experiment, not a guaranteed fix, and change one variable at a time.

How to make a useful performance report

Because no Maldhalla-specific Deck benchmark is available, your own measurements need enough context to be meaningful. Record:

Best Value
Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
  • Deck model and SteamOS version.
  • Maldhalla build number or update date shown by Steam.
  • Native SteamOS/Linux or the exact Proton tool used.
  • Output resolution and in-game quality settings.
  • The scene or activity tested and session length.
  • Average and 1% low FPS if you measure them, plus frame-time behavior.
  • Battery drain, temperature or fan observations only when measured under the same conditions.
  • Controller, text-legibility and online or middleware behavior.

These details distinguish a repeatable result from a one-off impression. A statement such as “runs well” is incomplete without the build, resolution, compatibility path and scene that produced it.

What to expect from the compatibility status over time

The Unknown badge may change when Valve evaluates the game or when later builds address launch, control, text or performance problems. Recheck the store listing after updates rather than assuming the original status remains current. Likewise, a future developer update could change the minimum requirements or introduce a different Linux, Vulkan, OpenGL or Windows runtime path.

Until a published rating or reproducible testing establishes more, the defensible recommendation is conditional: install when the release is available, begin with the native SteamOS/Linux build at the Deck’s default resolution, and use Proton as a controlled fallback. Any stronger claim about FPS, battery life or thermals would require a clearly documented test.

Practical verdict

Maldhalla is a plausible Steam Deck candidate because its Steam listing includes SteamOS/Linux support and modest stated requirements, but the current Unknown badge and lack of Deck-specific benchmarks leave real-world performance unconfirmed. The safest setup is therefore a clean, updated native launch with default settings, followed by measured one-change-at-a-time tuning. Force Proton only when the native path or the selected build requires it, and judge success by stable frame delivery, responsive controls and readable text rather than by an invented target.
