There is an important limitation: the official materials do not establish a built-in custom-level browser or confirm that every editor-made map can be played online. The separate MechWarrior 5: Clans Windows editor is a different tool and should not be installed or described as the Mercenaries editor.

The Steam listing for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries identifies Piranha Games Inc. as the developer and publisher, lists the game as released on May 26, 2021, and includes Online Co-op and Steam Workshop among its features. That listing is the basis for the following platform-specific points; do not assume that every edition or platform has identical mod tools or networking options.
- Maximum group size: four players in PvE co-op.
- Playable modes: the campaign and Instant Action.
- Connection requirement: the Steam system notes say broadband internet is needed to play and host co-op games.
- Creation tools: a full editor and gameplay-mod support are listed for Mercenaries.
- Distribution: Steam Workshop hosts community mods and collections.
These features answer the basic “play with friends” question. They do not, by themselves, prove cross-platform play, a particular console editor, a campaign-unlock requirement, or online support for every user-created map.

How the four-player co-op works
Campaign co-op
Campaign co-op lets a group share the main mercenary experience while fighting AI-controlled opposition. The official listing confirms campaign co-op as a supported mode, but the material available here does not specify whether every campaign activity, progression state, or downloadable-content combination behaves identically for all players. Confirm the current rules for your edition before planning a long shared run.
Instant Action co-op
Instant Action is the other officially listed co-op route. It is the natural place to test a new group composition, a recently installed mod, or an editor-made change without committing a campaign session. The listing confirms the mode is available for up to four players, but it does not establish that a custom map created with the editor automatically appears in Instant Action.
Internet and platform scope
For the Steam edition, broadband internet is listed as necessary both to play and to host co-op. That is a Steam-store requirement, not a universal statement about every platform. The supplied official material also does not establish cross-platform multiplayer, so keep the group on a configuration that the game and the specific mod documentation explicitly support.

Custom levels: what the editor actually gives you
The official Mercenaries Mod Editor Guide (version 1) demonstrates an editor workflow rather than a ready-made in-game level-sharing service. Its examples include creating a basic test map, spawning AI-controlled and player-controlled BattleMechs, creating a new weapon, and modifying game assets. Those examples show that you can build and alter gameplay content, but they do not guarantee a one-click custom-level browser or online play for every project.
Think of a “custom level” in Mercenaries as a mod package made with the editor. The practical result may be a changed map, altered assets, new equipment, or a combination of those elements. Whether another player can load and play that package depends on the mod’s implementation, game version, dependencies, and multiplayer guidance.
Creating a test map: a safe first workflow
The guide’s basic test-map example is the best starting point because it limits the number of variables. Use it to prove that the editor launches, the project cooks or packages correctly, and the game can load the result before attempting a large mission overhaul.

- Confirm the game and editor identity. Install the editor intended for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, not the separate Clans editor. Check the editor and game version numbers before opening a project.
- Create the smallest test project. Follow the guide’s basic test-map workflow and save the project in a location you can back up. Avoid changing several unrelated assets at once.
- Add a player-controlled BattleMech spawn. The guide demonstrates player-controlled spawning. Use one controlled spawn first so you can confirm that the map loads and the player can enter the mission space.
- Add an AI BattleMech spawn. Add the guide’s AI-controlled spawn example after the player spawn works. This creates a simple combat test without introducing a full mission’s worth of variables.
- Run the map locally. Launch the resulting content in the supported test path and check loading, spawn locations, collision, visibility, and combat behavior. Record the exact game and editor versions used.
- Change one asset at a time. The guide also covers asset modification and new-weapon creation. Make a single change, test it, and keep a clean copy of the last working project so a failed edit does not obscure the cause.
- Package and document the mod. Include the supported game version, required dependencies, installation method, known conflicts, and whether multiplayer has actually been tested. Do not label a map “co-op compatible” merely because it loads in a solo test.
The guide is an editor tutorial, not a promise that every map can be published through a built-in browser. If your goal is to play with friends, treat local loading and online loading as separate tests.

Steam Workshop contains Mercenaries mods and collections, including collections described as co-op oriented. A collection title is not proof that every included item works with every other item, remains current, or supports all multiplayer situations.
Check before subscribing or hosting
- Read the mod’s own description for the supported Mercenaries version.
- Check whether the author lists dependencies or a required load order.
- Look for explicit notes about multiplayer, campaign use, or Instant Action.
- Review warnings about conflicts with other map, asset, weapon, or gameplay mods.
- Check the most recent update information and user reports rather than relying only on the collection name.
- Have every participant follow the author’s stated installation and version instructions.
Because compatibility is version-sensitive, a collection that worked for one game build may fail after an update. Keep a record of the exact mod set used for a successful session so you can reproduce it or roll back one change at a time.

Can you play a custom map in online co-op?
The official sources reviewed do not establish a general yes. They confirm an editor, gameplay-mod support, and four-player co-op for the stock campaign and Instant Action modes, but they do not document a universal custom-level browser or guarantee that an editor-created map is playable online.
That distinction matters when evaluating a mod description. “Supports co-op” might mean that the author tested a changed weapon in a normal mission, while another project may replace a map or mission structure that has never been tested with multiple players. Only the project’s own current documentation and a successful test with the intended group can establish compatibility for that particular mod.

Mercenaries editor versus Clans editor
MechWarrior 5: Clans has its own Windows modding editor. Its Epic Games Store listing describes a free add-on released June 19, 2025, for creating missions, gameplay systems, visuals, and audio. Those capabilities belong to Clans and should not be presented as features of the Mercenaries tool.

If you are following a Mercenaries tutorial, downloading the Clans editor will not provide the same project workflow. Conversely, a Clans guide cannot be used as evidence that a Mercenaries map has the same mission or audio-authoring features.
Troubleshooting a failed co-op mod session
The mod loads solo but not for the group
Recheck the mod’s supported game version, dependencies, and multiplayer notes. Remove recently added items and test a minimal set. A successful solo load does not prove online compatibility.
Players see different behavior
Compare the exact mod list, versions, and load-order instructions used by each participant. If the author specifies a required arrangement, follow it exactly. Do not assume that a Workshop collection synchronizes every dependency or resolves conflicts automatically.
The map will not load after an edit
Return to the last working project, then reapply one asset or spawn change at a time. Keep the player and AI spawn tests separate from weapon and broader asset edits so you can identify which change introduced the failure.
A collection claims co-op support but provides no details
Treat the claim as an invitation to investigate, not a guarantee. Open each item’s description, check its version notes and conflicts, and look for an author statement about the exact mode you intend to play.
A practical decision guide
- You want an official multiplayer experience: use the campaign or Instant Action, with a group of up to four and broadband internet on the Steam edition.
- You want to experiment alone: start with the official basic test-map workflow, then add BattleMech spawns and one asset change at a time.
- You want to share a creation: package it as a versioned mod and document dependencies, conflicts, installation, and tested modes.
- You want to play a custom map online: proceed only when that specific mod’s documentation and your own test establish multiplayer support; the general editor documentation is not enough.
- You are researching Clans tools: use the separate Windows Clans editor information and do not transfer its capabilities to Mercenaries.
The Bottom Line
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is built for four-player PvE co-op in campaign and Instant Action, and its editor can produce substantial gameplay and map modifications.
