The official way to play Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on a Chromebook is to install Mojang’s Android/ChromeOS app from the Chromebook’s built-in Google Play Store. Your Chromebook must support Android apps, Google Play must be enabled, and the Minecraft listing must show the device as compatible.
This is Bedrock Edition—not Java Edition or Minecraft Education—and it supports Bedrock cross-play, Marketplace content, and Realms on compatible devices.

Minecraft is not guaranteed to work on every Chromebook. First confirm that the device supports Android apps and Google Play.
- Click the clock in the bottom-right corner.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Look for Manage Google Play preferences.
If that option is missing, the Chromebook either does not support Android apps or the feature has been disabled. Update ChromeOS and check again. Google says Chromebooks launched after 2019 generally support Android apps, but older models require checking the compatibility information for the specific device. Android-app support also does not guarantee that Minecraft will run well.

On a school- or work-managed Chromebook, an administrator may have blocked Google Play or app installation. You normally cannot bypass that policy; contact the school or organization’s administrator.
Google Play’s device-specific compatibility result is the final practical test. An app may be unavailable because of the Chromebook model, ChromeOS or Android configuration, screen characteristics, account region, or developer restrictions.

What you need
- A Chromebook that supports Google Play and is compatible with Minecraft.
- The latest ChromeOS version available for the device.
- A Google account signed in to the Chromebook and Google Play.
- Enough free storage for Minecraft, updates, and saved worlds.
- A reliable internet connection for downloading, updates, account sign-in, and online play.
- A Microsoft account if you want cross-platform multiplayer, Realms, Marketplace purchases, social features, or parental controls.
Google Play ownership belongs to the Google account used to purchase or install the app. Your Microsoft account handles Minecraft-related features and identity, but signing into Microsoft does not by itself purchase the Google Play app.
How to install Minecraft Bedrock
1. Enable Google Play
In Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences, follow the on-screen setup instructions and accept Google Play’s Terms of Service. Then open the Google Play Store from the Chromebook Launcher.
Google Play apps are installed separately on a Chromebook. Owning an app on a phone does not automatically install it on the Chromebook.
2. Find the official listing
Search the native Play Store app for Minecraft: Dream it, Build it. Confirm that:

- The package is the official Minecraft app, not a launcher or “free Minecraft” download.
- The listing indicates Chromebook support or allows installation on your device.
You can also open the official Minecraft Google Play listing.
3. Buy or install Minecraft
Select Buy or Install. In the United States, the listing showed $6.99 in August 2026. That is a dated price signal, not a permanent worldwide price: taxes, country, promotions, account history, and eligibility can change the amount.
Google has said that people who already own Minecraft for Android may receive the Chromebook version at a discount. Use the same Google account and check the purchase screen; do not assume that every Android purchase, Windows purchase, or Microsoft Store purchase automatically unlocks the Chromebook listing.
Wait for installation to finish, then open Minecraft from the Launcher.
Sign in correctly
You may be able to start local single-player play without immediately linking a Microsoft account. For the full Bedrock experience, sign in with the Microsoft account connected to your existing Minecraft activity, if you have one.
A Microsoft account enables or supports features including:
- Cross-platform Bedrock multiplayer.
- Realms.
- Marketplace purchases and account-linked content.
- Friends and other social features.
- Parental-control settings.
Be careful not to create a second Microsoft account accidentally. If you already play on Xbox, Windows, Android, or another Bedrock platform, use the account associated with that profile.

Set up keyboard, mouse, touch, and controller input
Chromebook Minecraft can use keyboard and mouse, touch controls, a trackpad, and compatible controllers depending on the device and app support. Start with Minecraft’s own settings:
- Open Minecraft.
- Go to Settings → Controls.
- Review or change the available bindings and input options.
A USB or Bluetooth mouse is usually more comfortable than a trackpad for camera movement and combat. If the game opens in a phone-sized window, use the window controls to resize it or switch to fullscreen when available. On touchscreen Chromebooks, compare touch controls with keyboard and mouse rather than assuming one will be better.
If an accessory is not recognized, disconnect and reconnect it, restart Minecraft, pair Bluetooth devices again, and test the built-in keyboard and trackpad. ChromeOS also provides Android-app window modes and game-input features, but Minecraft’s own control settings should be your first choice.

Improve performance on slower Chromebooks
Performance varies substantially by processor, RAM, storage, cooling design, ChromeOS version, and Minecraft settings. There is no universal frame-rate guarantee for Chromebooks.
- Close unnecessary browser tabs and Android apps.
- Lower render distance and other graphics settings.
- Keep the Chromebook on a hard, unobstructed surface.
- Install ChromeOS and Minecraft updates.
- Keep adequate free storage available.
- Restart after major updates.
- Connect the charger if battery-saving behavior is reducing performance.
Google’s guidance for Minecraft Education—not a published Bedrock hardware specification—notes that Minecraft workloads can use significant CPU resources and that fanless devices may encounter thermal limits. Treat that as a useful performance warning, not as a Bedrock minimum-requirement list.
Do not buy a replacement Chromebook solely because it supports Android apps. Exact model, processor, RAM, thermals, storage, and active ChromeOS support all matter.

Common installation and account problems
Minecraft does not appear in Google Play
Possible causes include an unsupported Chromebook, disabled Google Play, school or work restrictions, regional availability, or a device-specific compatibility restriction.
- Update ChromeOS.
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Open the native Play Store app rather than only the web version.
- Confirm that Google Play is enabled.
- Check whether the Chromebook is managed.
- Search the official Mojang listing again.
If the app remains unavailable, treat the device as unsupported. Sideloading a random APK will not necessarily add the missing hardware or Android capability and can create security, update, and account problems.
“Your device is not compatible with this version”
This is a device-specific compatibility failure. Check the Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, available storage, Play Store status, and account region. Manual APK installation is not a reliable fix and is not the official installation method.
The Play Store will not open
Restart the Chromebook, check the internet connection, install available ChromeOS updates, and try again. If the problem continues, use Google’s broader Chromebook and Google Play troubleshooting guidance.
The purchase or content is missing
Separate the accounts involved:
- Google account: Play Store purchase and installation eligibility.
- Microsoft account: Minecraft profile, Marketplace content, friends, and many online features.
- Local storage: Worlds saved only on the Chromebook.
- Realm: A hosted world associated with the relevant Minecraft account and subscription.
Confirm that you are using the same Google account that made the purchase and the same Microsoft account used for your Bedrock profile. Before uninstalling Minecraft or powerwashing the Chromebook, back up important local worlds using Minecraft’s available export or backup options. Do not assume local worlds will survive app removal or a device reset.
Multiplayer does not work
Confirm that everyone is using Bedrock Edition, the correct Microsoft account is signed in, multiplayer is enabled in the world settings, and privacy or parental controls allow online play. A school or home network may also block gaming traffic.
Chromebook players can play with supported Bedrock players on Android, Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Java players and Java servers are separate and cannot normally join a Bedrock world.

For a school-managed device, ask the administrator whether Google Play or Minecraft can be enabled. Do not attempt to bypass management controls.
If the hardware is incompatible or too slow, the safest alternatives are a supported Chromebook or another Bedrock platform. Java through Linux can make sense for an advanced user who specifically needs Java servers or mods, but it is not a straightforward way to install Bedrock. Cloud gaming or remote play may also work on some devices, but those options require a suitable service, game entitlement, and dependable internet connection; they do not install Minecraft locally.
