How to Play Minecraft Java With Friends on Different Wi-Fi Networks

Open to LAN is for the same local network. Here are the simplest ways to play Minecraft: Java Edition with friends on different Wi-Fi networks.

Open to LAN is not normally enough when Minecraft: Java Edition players are in different homes or connected to different Wi-Fi networks. For the simplest setup, use Minecraft Realms for Java. Use a managed server host for mods, plugins, or more control; self-host the official server if you are comfortable with networking; or use a VPN/tunnel as an advanced workaround.

Before choosing a method, make sure everyone is launching Minecraft: Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.

First, confirm everyone is using Java Edition

Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Bedrock is the edition commonly used on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, mobile devices, and Minecraft for Windows. Java and Bedrock use different multiplayer systems, so a normal Java Realm or Java server will not accept Bedrock players.

Some PC owners have access to both editions, but each player must launch the same edition as the server or Realm. If a friend is on a console or phone, they are probably using Bedrock. They would need Java on a supported computer, or the group would need to use Bedrock multiplayer instead. Specialized cross-play server configurations exist, but they are a separate advanced setup.

Choose the right online method

Method Best for Host must be online? Cost and difficulty
Java Realms Small private groups and beginners No Paid subscription; easiest
Managed Java server Mods, plugins, persistent worlds, and more control No, while the plan is active Paid monthly; easy to moderate
Self-hosted server Technical users wanting maximum control Usually yes Software is free; advanced setup
VPN or tunnel Temporary sessions or avoiding port forwarding Usually yes Often free or paid; moderate troubleshooting

Quick recommendation: choose Java Realms if you want the least setup. Choose a managed server if you need mods, plugins, or extensive configuration.

Why Open to LAN does not solve different Wi-Fi networks

Java’s LAN feature is designed for players on the same local network, such as the same home router.

  1. The host opens a single-player world.
  2. Press Esc and select Open to LAN.
  3. Choose the game mode and whether cheats are enabled.
  4. Select Start LAN World.
  5. Other players open Multiplayer and look for the LAN world.

This works when the computers can discover one another on the same network. Friends in different homes normally will not see that world automatically. The world also normally stops being available when the host closes it. For remote play, use a Realm, a reachable dedicated server, or a networking workaround. Mojang distinguishes LAN/Wi-Fi play from online server play in its Minecraft platform comparison.

Option 1: Minecraft Realms for Java

Realms is the easiest official solution. It is a private, cloud-hosted Java server that remains available when the owner is offline. The Realms comparison page showed Java Realms at $7.99 USD per month when researched; pricing, taxes, regional availability, and plan details can change, so check the live Realms page before subscribing.

How to set up a Java Realm

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
  2. From the game’s main menu, select Minecraft Realms.
  3. Create or start a Java Realm.
  4. Open the Realm’s configuration or player-management screen.
  5. Invite friends using the available Friends-list, profile-name, or invitation-link option.
  6. Your friends accept the invitation and join from the Realms menu.

Menu labels can change between game versions. Mojang documents invitation options through its gamertag invitation guide.

Why Realms is a good beginner choice

  • No port forwarding or router configuration.
  • No need to expose your home computer directly to the internet.
  • The world stays online when the owner logs off.
  • Realms includes backups and invited-player access.
  • Friends do not need their own Realms subscription.

Realms limitations

  • It requires a recurring subscription.
  • Everyone joining must use Java Edition.
  • It offers less control than a normal Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Paper, or vanilla server.
  • It is intended for private multiplayer, not a large public community.
  • Player and simultaneous-player limits depend on the current plan and official feature details; check Mojang’s live page before relying on a specific limit.

Realms is usually the right answer for two or three friends who want a shared vanilla world without technical maintenance.

Option 2: A managed Java server host

A third-party host provides a server computer, control panel, and internet connection. This is usually better than Realms when the group wants mods, modpacks, plugins, multiple worlds, more configuration, or a server that stays online without anyone’s gaming PC running.

Typical setup

  1. Create a Java server plan with a provider.
  2. Select the Minecraft version and server type.
  3. Choose vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or another supported option.
  4. Accept the EULA and start the server.
  5. Copy the server address supplied by the host.
  6. Each friend selects Multiplayer → Add Server or Direct Connection, enters the address, and chooses Join Server.

The official Minecraft server guide explains the Java Multiplayer connection flow.

Hosting does not remove compatibility requirements. Players normally need:

  • The same edition: Java.
  • The same Minecraft release.
  • The same mod loader for modded play.
  • The same mod list and compatible mod versions when the mods are required on the client.

A vanilla client will not automatically join a server requiring a particular modpack. Check the host’s supported loaders, memory allocation, modpack tools, file access, and backup features before buying.

As price signals, BisectHosting’s page showed plans starting at $3.00 per GB per month, including displayed examples of $5.99 for 2 GB, $11.99 for 4 GB, and $17.99 for 6 GB. Those are vendor guidance, not performance guarantees: actual requirements depend on player count, view distance, world size, server software, and mods. Apex Hosting displayed a recurring $14.99 price for an associated plan, but the plan, billing interval, promotions, and renewal terms must be confirmed at checkout. See BisectHosting and Apex Hosting for current terms.

Option 3: Self-host the official Java server

Mojang provides official Java server software through its server download page. The download itself is available without a hosting subscription, but self-hosting is not effortless or necessarily cost-free: you provide the computer, electricity, internet connection, backups, administration, and security.

High-level setup

  1. Download the server JAR and install a compatible Java runtime.
  2. Create a dedicated server folder.
  3. Run the server once, then open the generated eula.txt.
  4. Change the EULA line to accept the agreement.
  5. Run the server again.
  6. Configure server.properties.
  7. Allow Java or the server through the computer’s firewall.
  8. Keep the computer awake and connected while friends play.
  9. Configure router port forwarding if players are connecting from outside your home.
  10. Give friends the public address and configured port.

Mojang’s documented launch pattern is:

java -Xmx4G -Xms4G -jar minecraft_server.<version>.jar nogui

Replace the version placeholder with the exact server filename. Java servers commonly use TCP port 25565 by default, but the actual port is determined by server.properties and may be different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why remote connections fail

  • Windows Firewall or another firewall blocks Java.
  • Port forwarding points to the wrong computer or local IP.
  • The friend is given a private address such as 192.168.x.x instead of the public address.
  • The router has double NAT.
  • The ISP uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), preventing normal inbound port forwarding.
  • The public IP changes.
  • The host computer sleeps or loses internet access.
  • The upload connection is insufficient for the group.

Port forwarding is not guaranteed to work in every household. If CGNAT or ISP restrictions prevent inbound connections, use Realms, a managed host, or a suitable relay/tunnel service.

  • Powerful processor; 1.8 GHz quad core processor delivers ultra fast and reliable connections
  • Mystic light; sync RGB light effects with mystic light compatible products
  • Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences

Keep the server private: do not post your home IP publicly, use a whitelist where appropriate, update server software, and back up the world before changing server software or mods.

Option 4: VPNs and tunneling tools

A VPN or tunnel can connect players through a virtual private network or expose a local Minecraft service through a relay. This may avoid router configuration, but it is not as simple as Realms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Every player may need to install and configure the same client.
  • The host still usually needs to remain online.
  • Performance depends on the VPN or relay route.
  • Free plans may impose bandwidth, uptime, or connection limits.
  • Some tools expose more of the host’s network than players expect.
  • Troubleshooting is harder, especially with mods and firewalls.

Use this approach only if the group is comfortable evaluating the provider’s privacy, security, reliability, and connection model. It is an advanced alternative, not an official replacement for Realms.

Do not confuse Java’s 2026 Friends List with remote world hosting

Mojang announced a Friends List for Java in a 2026 snapshot, but the announcement also said peer-to-peer play for local worlds was removed from that release. Do not assume the Friends List automatically lets remote players join an ordinary single-player world, or that it works like Bedrock’s world-invite system. Treat snapshot behavior separately from the stable release and check later official documentation before relying on it.

See Mojang’s announcements about the Friends List for Java Edition and Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 7.

Troubleshooting

The friend cannot see the world

This usually means the host opened a LAN world while the players are on different networks. Use a Realm or dedicated server. If self-hosting, start the server and provide the public address, not the host’s private local address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connection timed out

  1. Confirm that the server is running.
  2. Check the address and port.
  3. Match the Minecraft versions.
  4. Allow Java through the host firewall.
  5. Verify port forwarding targets the correct computer.
  6. Check for CGNAT or double NAT.
  7. Test from outside the host’s own network.

Mojang’s Java multiplayer troubleshooting guide and Windows LAN guide provide additional checks.

“Incompatible version” or mod mismatch

Make the client, server release, mod loader, mod list, and mod versions match. A snapshot client should not be assumed to work with a stable-release server.

The friend is on Bedrock

Have the player launch Java on a supported computer, or use Bedrock multiplayer instead. Cross-play bridges require separate server software and configuration; they are not automatic.

Friends are kicked when the host leaves

That is expected when playing directly in the host’s single-player world. Use Realms or a dedicated server for a world that remains available after the host exits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server works locally but not remotely

Check port forwarding, firewall rules, the public address, the configured server port, double NAT, and CGNAT. A server working for the host’s computer does not prove it is reachable from the internet.

The shortest answer

  • Small vanilla group: Minecraft Java Realms.
  • Mods, plugins, or more control: a managed Java server host.
  • Technical user avoiding a monthly fee: self-host the official server.
  • Temporary workaround: a carefully chosen VPN or tunnel.
