Yes—you can play Minecraft offline on a Windows 10 PC, but only after completing the account, download and permission steps while you are connected. Install the current Minecraft Launcher, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game, download Java Edition or Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), launch that edition once, and enable Windows offline-game permissions. Then disconnect and start a downloaded local world.
Offline play is limited to content already stored on the computer. Local single-player worlds should work; online servers, Realms, Marketplace services, ownership checks, new downloads and updates do not. Test the setup before a trip because Microsoft does not promise that every launcher or Store authentication will remain available offline indefinitely.

What “offline” means in Minecraft on Windows 10
Offline mode is not a separate Minecraft edition. It is the launcher and game using locally cached account authorization and downloaded files instead of contacting Microsoft’s services. Your computer must have completed the initial sign-in and installation while online.
- Usually available: an existing local Java or Bedrock single-player world, and a new local world if the selected edition has already been installed and started.
- Not available without connectivity: first-time account sign-in, ownership recovery, online servers, Realms, Marketplace purchases and downloads, cloud-connected services, game or launcher updates, and downloading a new version.
- Not guaranteed forever: a cached authorization can stop working after account changes, a major update or a Store/launcher change. Keep the installation current while online and verify it before relying on it.
Prepare Minecraft while you still have internet
1. Install the official Windows launcher
Use Minecraft’s official Windows download page and install the current Minecraft Launcher. The page supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. The launcher is the common entry point for Java Edition and Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock).

Do not disconnect during installation. The launcher may need to install or update Microsoft Store components and game files before either edition can start.
2. Sign in with the purchasing Microsoft account
Open the launcher and sign in with the same Microsoft account used to purchase Minecraft. The PC product is listed as Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC when both editions are included with the purchase.

If the launcher displays Buy Now, a demo, or no owned edition, stop here. Do not try to prepare an offline installation under a different account. Sign out, use the purchasing account, and confirm that the owned edition appears before continuing.
3. Select the edition you intend to use
Choose Java Edition or Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock) in the launcher. Install the edition that matches the world, mods, servers or friends you plan to use; Java and Bedrock are separate game ecosystems.
- Java is the Windows PC choice for Java-focused mods and custom servers.
- Bedrock is the choice for cross-platform play with Windows 10/11, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and mobile players.
4. Finish every download and launch once
While connected, let the launcher finish downloading the selected edition and its required files. Start that exact edition once and load an existing local world or create a test world. Reaching the normal title screen and entering a world confirms that the installation is complete enough for a meaningful offline test.

Repeat this for any edition you expect to use offline. Launching Java does not prepare Bedrock, and launching Bedrock does not prepare Java.

Microsoft’s Xbox Support article titled Play games offline on Windows 10 using offline mode explains how to enable the Windows offline-game permission. The setting is handled through the Microsoft/Xbox/Microsoft Store account flow and its exact label or location can change.
- Remain signed in to the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
- Open the Microsoft or Xbox support instructions for Windows 10 offline mode and follow the current account and Store prompts.
- Enable offline permissions while the computer is connected. If Windows asks which account or device should be authorized, use the account and PC on which you installed Minecraft.
- Return to the launcher and start the edition again before disconnecting.
The current support page requires JavaScript for its detailed instructions. If you cannot find the setting, reconnect and search Microsoft Support for the exact article title rather than relying on an old screenshot or a different account flow.
6. Perform a real offline test
- Close Minecraft and the launcher completely.
- Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet.
- Reopen the launcher and start the already-downloaded edition.
- Open an existing local world. Do not use the test to download a new version, join a server or open Marketplace content.
If the world loads with the network disconnected, the basic setup is working. Perform this test before travel, school, work or any other situation in which you may not be able to reconnect.
Java or Bedrock: which is better for offline use?
Both editions can run a downloaded local world offline. The practical choice depends on the content and people you need to use, not on a claim that one edition has a longer offline period.

Do not assume that a Java world, mod or server can be opened in Bedrock, or that a Bedrock world can be moved into Java without conversion and compatibility work. For a completely offline session, every texture, mod, add-on or resource you intend to use must already be present and compatible with that edition and version.
What you can do without Wi-Fi
Play a local single-player world
After the account has been recognized, files have finished downloading and offline permissions are enabled, local single-player is the main offline use case. Start the same edition you tested and choose a world stored on the PC. The world does not need a server connection to load.
New content is a different matter. A world that depends on a Marketplace download, a missing resource pack, a mod that has not been installed, or a version that is not on the computer cannot be fetched while disconnected.
Play Bedrock over a local network
Bedrock LAN play is different from playing on an online server. Minecraft Help states: “To play Minecraft: Bedrock Edition with friends over a Local Area Network (LAN), all players must have the most recent version of Minecraft, devices that support LAN play, and the same network connection.”

- Make sure every player has the same current Bedrock version and a device that supports LAN play.
- Connect every device to the same local network.
- On the host, select Play, find the world, and choose the edit option.
- Enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
- Start the world.
- On each other device, open the Worlds tab and select the world marked as available on the LAN.
This does not turn an online server into an offline server. It is a local-world sharing feature, so the host must remain in the world and all players must satisfy the same-version and same-network requirements. Test it before disconnecting from the internet; a local network can remain available even when the network has no outside connection, but router, firewall and device settings can affect discovery.

Use a free trial
Minecraft’s official free-trial FAQ says the trial can be played offline, but online multiplayer servers are disabled. LAN multiplayer is allowed. The Java and Bedrock trials provide approximately 100 minutes of in-game time, or about five in-game days. Treat that figure as the trial allowance described by Minecraft, not as a promise about paid-game offline sessions.
What still needs an internet connection

If the launcher offers an offline option, select it only after the preparation steps have succeeded. It cannot substitute for an account that has never been signed in, an edition that has never been downloaded, or a missing update that the game now requires.

The launcher shows Buy Now or a demo
Reconnect and verify the Microsoft account. It must be the account that purchased Minecraft or redeemed the entitlement. Sign out of the launcher, sign back in with that account, and confirm that the owned Java or Bedrock edition appears. Do not disconnect again until the edition starts successfully.
The game was never launched before disconnecting
Reconnect, select the exact edition, wait for all downloads to finish, and enter a local world once. A launcher download alone is not a sufficient test; the first launch may still need to create or validate local files.
Offline mode is unavailable or the game asks you to sign in
Reconnect and review Windows offline-game permissions in the current Microsoft/Xbox/Store account flow. The permission must be enabled while connected and under the same account used by the launcher. If Microsoft has changed the screen, use the current Xbox Support article rather than an archived guide.

The launcher keeps trying to update
Do not attempt to install a new launcher or game version while disconnected. Start the version already installed, then reconnect later and allow updates to complete. If Windows is using a metered connection, Microsoft warns that metered mode can limit app updates or the information displayed by apps; use an unrestricted connection for setup and maintenance.
You changed accounts, cleared Store credentials or uninstalled the launcher
Those actions can remove the cached authorization or files that offline mode depends on. Reconnect, reinstall or restore the official launcher as needed, sign in with the owning account, repeat the first launch, and re-enable offline permissions before testing again.
A Bedrock LAN world is not visible
- Confirm that every device is on the same network, not merely connected to separate guest networks.
- Check that every player has the most recent Bedrock version.
- On the host, verify both Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
- Leave and reopen the Worlds tab after the host starts the world.
- Check local firewall or router isolation settings if devices can use the internet but cannot discover one another.
You need a resource, mod or Marketplace item during the trip
Reconnect before leaving and open the world with every required add-on, resource pack and mod enabled. Confirm that the content is compatible with the installed edition and version. Offline mode cannot download a missing dependency or repair a broken installation.
Windows 10 support and compatibility caveat
Microsoft Support says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. The PC may continue to run Minecraft, but launcher and Microsoft Store compatibility can change as services evolve.
For that reason, keep the launcher and game updated while online, and do not wait until you are offline to discover that a required Store component or game version has changed. This is a compatibility precaution, not a guarantee that a particular Windows 10 installation will remain supported.
