You can play a missing Sega Genesis game on Nintendo Switch only if it is available through a separate route you can access; the Nintendo Switch Online Genesis app does not unlock games outside its catalog. Its selected library requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Check Nintendo’s current list for the exact game before subscribing or looking for another option.
Check whether the game is in the Genesis collection
- Open Nintendo’s SEGA Genesis – Nintendo Switch Online page and search its displayed list for the exact title.
- If it is listed, access it through the Nintendo Classics app with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo’s Classic Games Library page explains the service access route.
- If it is not listed, the Genesis app does not provide a way to play it. Nintendo describes the catalog as a collection, not the complete Genesis library.
The current catalog includes titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star IV, Ristar, Shining Force II, ToeJam & Earl and The Revenge of Shinobi. The Nintendo page is the best place to verify whether any particular game is included, since its lineup can change.

What to do if your game is absent
Check whether you already own SEGA Mega Drive Classics
SEGA says SEGA Mega Drive Classics for Nintendo Switch became unavailable for new purchases on December 6, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. PST. If you bought it before delisting, SEGA says you can still download and play it from your library. It is therefore a possible route for an existing owner, not a new-purchase solution. Its contents should not be assumed to include every game absent from Nintendo’s subscription collection. See SEGA’s support notice for the stated availability and ownership details.
Look for another legitimate release for Switch
A game may have a separate Switch release, but availability is title- and region-specific. Check the Nintendo eShop or the publisher’s official listing for the exact game. Do not assume a Genesis cartridge, a Genesis console, or a controller accessory will make the game run on Switch.

Use original Genesis hardware if the Switch-specific requirement can change
A Genesis console and cartridge can play a game on Genesis hardware, not on the Nintendo Switch. This is an alternative platform, not a way to add games to the Switch app.
Why a game is missing—and what Nintendo has confirmed
Nintendo does not explain on the reviewed collection pages why any particular Genesis game is omitted. Possible explanations such as licensing or rights should not be treated as the confirmed reason for a named title. Nintendo also gives no release calendar or promise that a specific absent game will be added. Its support FAQ says, “There is no set schedule for new releases, but each collection will continue to grow.”

Nintendo’s support FAQ also says there are no plans to sell the classic games individually outside the Nintendo Switch Online service. That statement describes Nintendo’s stated plan; it does not rule out separate releases from publishers through other channels.
Membership, offline play and accessories
The Genesis collection requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo says classic games can be played offline, but members must connect the console to the internet at least once every seven days so membership can be verified. Rewind, save or suspend features, and online play are available for supported games; none of these features adds titles that are absent from the catalog. The SEGA Genesis Control Pad is an optional accessory for the collection, not a way to add missing games. Nintendo does not guarantee that it works with other software. Its support FAQ covers its intended use.

Availability can vary by region and store, and service terms or catalog contents may change. Confirm the current listing and conditions on the official pages before making a purchase decision.
