Check the Minecraft profile before anyone connects
Most failed joins are profile mismatches rather than networking problems. Perform these checks before changing settings:
- Edition: These instructions target Minecraft: Java Edition. A Bedrock client cannot join a Java modded profile through these workflows.
- Game version: Every player should launch the same Minecraft version. e4mc’s project information specifically requires the host and joining setup to match the supported version.
- Mod loader: Use the same loader on every installation. e4mc releases are tied to particular loaders and game versions.

Open to LAN is built into Java Edition and needs no additional multiplayer mod. It is appropriate only when every player can reach the host on the same local network, including a private virtual network that makes the computers reachable as if they were local.
Host procedure
- Launch the modded Java profile and load the world you want to share.
- Press Escape to open the pause menu.
- Choose Open to LAN.
- Set the available game options shown by Minecraft, then select the control to start the LAN world.
- Read the chat message that appears. It includes the port assigned to that LAN session.
Joining procedure
- Each friend launches the same Minecraft version, loader, and mod set.
- From the title screen, open Multiplayer and wait for the LAN world to appear.
- Select the host’s world and choose Join Server.
- If automatic discovery does not show it, use Direct Connection. Enter the host’s local IP address, followed by a colon and the port shown in the host’s chat message.
The local IP route works only when the joining computer can actually reach the host’s network. A private address from the host’s home network is not a public internet address; giving it to a friend in another city will not make the session reachable.
When LAN is the right answer
- Everyone is physically on the same network and wants the fewest moving parts.
- The modpack already launches correctly for every player.
- No one needs to play after the host closes the world.
LAN alone does not create a public internet connection. If friends are remote, use Essential or e4mc instead of trying to expose the host’s private address.

Option 2: Host and invite friends with Essential
Essential adds a host-and-invite flow inside the game. It avoids setting up a separate server application, but it does not turn the world into an independent service: Essential states that the host acts as the server and must remain online.

- Install the Essential release that supports the host’s Minecraft version and loader.
- Add it to the same game instance that contains the modpack you intend to host.
- Launch that profile and confirm that the game reaches the main menu without a loader or mod error.
The other players still need the compatible modded profile. For a modded Essential session, Essential’s documentation requires the same mods on every player’s installation. A friend who has Essential installed but is missing one of the pack’s required mods is not using an identical profile.
Start hosting and send invitations
- Open the Essential interface from the launched game.
- Choose Host.
- Select the world you want to make available.
- Start hosting and use the friend or invite controls to add the players who should join.
- Have invited players accept the invitation and enter through the resulting multiplayer prompt.
Essential’s hosting guide documents a maximum of eight simultaneous players. That is a product limit for connected players, not a general Minecraft player-count statistic.
What the host-dependent design means
The host’s running game is the session’s authority. If the host leaves the world, closes the game, or loses the connection, the others cannot continue in that world as though it were a dedicated server. Start hosting only when the person who owns the active session can stay online for the planned play period.
Option 3: Use e4mc to extend Open to LAN over the internet
e4mc keeps Minecraft’s normal Open-to-LAN workflow but supplies a public address that remote friends can use. The host installs the compatible e4mc release, opens the world to LAN, and shares the address generated for that session. The e4mc listing describes the process as installing the mod and opening to LAN as normal.

Install the matching e4mc release
- Identify the host’s exact Minecraft version and mod loader.
- Download the e4mc release that supports that combination.
- Install e4mc in the host’s modded instance and launch the profile.
- Have the host load the world and verify that the pack works before inviting anyone.
Release compatibility changes as Minecraft versions and loaders change. Do not install a file merely because its name resembles your version; verify the exact compatibility information in the project’s current listing.
Publish the LAN session
- With the world loaded, press Escape.
- Choose Open to LAN, configure the available options, and start the LAN world.
- Copy the public address e4mc displays for the session.
- Send that current address to the friends who should join.

The world does not appear in Multiplayer

Such a service or self-managed server adds separate setup, maintenance, and potentially cost considerations.
A practical decision checklist
- Are all players on one reachable network? Use Open to LAN.
- Are players remote, and do you want invitations inside the game? Use Essential.
- Are players remote, and do you prefer the familiar Open-to-LAN flow? Use e4mc on the host.
- Must the world be available when the host is offline? Use a dedicated or hosted server instead; that no longer meets the strict no-server premise.
- Does everyone have the same Java profile? Confirm edition, version, loader, and mods before sending an invitation or address.
What each method does—and does not—replace
These methods replace the need to configure or pay for a separate dedicated server for a session. They do not replace the host’s computer, game process, or internet connection. LAN replaces only the discovery and connection steps for players who share a network. Essential adds an invitation layer and host controls. e4mc supplies a temporary public route to a LAN session. None creates persistence after the host stops playing.
