To play Assetto Corsa online on PC, install the Steam version, open the multiplayer server browser, and join a server whose car, track, and game files match yours. You do not need Content Manager or Custom Shaders Patch for a basic session. Those tools become useful when you want to host, manage mods, or use advanced server authentication.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Assetto Corsa servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What you need before joining an online race
Assetto Corsa multiplayer on PC is distributed through Steam. You need the game installed, a broadband internet connection, and a compatible input device. Steam lists keyboard and gamepad input as supported; a USB racing wheel is optional, but usually gives smoother steering and more precise throttle and brake control.

These figures come from Steam’s published listing, originally dated 2015 and still shown on the current store page accessed in 2026. They are a baseline for running the game, not a guarantee that a heavily modded server will run smoothly. Large grids, high-resolution car packs, custom weather, and post-processing can require substantially more CPU, memory, graphics performance, and storage.
- Update Assetto Corsa through Steam before joining a server.
- Leave enough free disk space for downloadable cars, tracks, and shader files.
- Close bandwidth-heavy downloads and cloud synchronisation while racing.
- Use a wired connection or a strong, stable Wi-Fi signal when possible.
How to join a public multiplayer server
The standard route is the in-game multiplayer browser. You can join without creating a server yourself.
#1 Best Overall
- Assetto Corsa features an advanced DirectX 11 graphics engine that recreates an immersive environment, dynamic lighthing and realistic materials and surfaces.
- Extremely detailed with single player and multiplayer options, exclusive licensed cars reproduced with the best accuracy possible, thanks to the official cooperation of Car Manufacturers.
- ASSETTO CORSA has been developed at the KUNOS Simulazioni R&D office, located just inside the international racing circuit of Vallelunga, allowing the team to develop the game with the cooperation of real world racing drivers and racing teams.
- Start Steam and launch Assetto Corsa.
- From the main menu, open the Multiplayer or Online server-browser option (the exact label can vary slightly by game build).
- Wait for the server list to populate. Use the search field and filters to narrow the list by track, session type, player count, password status, or required content.
- Select a server and read its information panel. Check the track, car, session schedule, password requirement, and any listed mod requirements.
- Install every required car and track using the server operator’s trusted instructions. Mod files must be installed in the correct Assetto Corsa folders, and the version must match the server.
- Click Join. Assetto Corsa loads the required session if your installation passes the server’s checks.
A server can reject you before the session starts when a required car or track is missing, when a file is a different version, or when your local content does not match the server’s checksum. A successful download is not enough: two files with the same name but different data can still fail the check. If the operator provides a specific archive, installer, or version number, use that source rather than substituting a similarly named mod.
How to join a friend’s Assetto Corsa server
Ask the host for the server’s exact name, password, track, car list, and required mod versions before you launch. The host may run a private session that is hidden among hundreds of public entries, so the exact name or a browser search term saves time.
- Install the same base-game update and all of the host’s listed cars, tracks, and optional dependencies.
- Open Multiplayer and search for the server name, or filter by the host’s region and track.
- Enter the password exactly as supplied, including capitalization if the host uses it.
- Join while the session is accepting connections. Some servers close registration during qualifying or when the race starts.
- If the server does not appear, ask the host whether it is private, still starting, or restricted to a local network. Do not assume that a missing listing means your game is broken.
For a private event, the host should send one authoritative content package and configuration note to every participant. Everyone should install the same versions and avoid replacing files with later updates until that event is over.
Do you need Content Manager or Custom Shaders Patch?
No. A basic client can join a standard Assetto Corsa server using the game’s normal launcher and multiplayer browser. Content Manager and Custom Shaders Patch are optional for ordinary joining.

When Content Manager helps
Content Manager is a third-party launcher and configuration tool commonly used to organise cars and tracks, create server presets, and package a host’s files. It is especially useful when you are setting up a private event or repeatedly switching between modded servers. It does not remove the need for matching content: every participant still needs compatible files.
When Custom Shaders Patch matters
Custom Shaders Patch adds features used by many modded servers and can be required by a particular car, track, weather setup, or server configuration. Install it only when the server’s instructions call for it, and use the version specified by the operator. A newer build is not automatically compatible with an older server package.
Custom Shaders Patch also has a specific role in AssettoServer’s Steam-authentication system. To obtain a Steam session ticket for that feature, the documented requirements are Custom Shaders Patch 0.1.75 or newer and Content Manager 0.8.2297.38573 or newer. Those versions are not a blanket requirement for every multiplayer session.
How to host a server with Content Manager
For a first-time host, creating the configuration in Content Manager is the quickest approach. AssettoServer’s beginner documentation describes running a server inside Content Manager as the fastest way to start; it also notes that a dedicated folder is more portable and flexible for advanced setups.

- Assetto Corsa Competizione is designed to faithfully recreate the performance and the driving experience of real Blancpain GT Series cars through a sophisticated mathematical model that accurately replicates tyre grip, aerodynamic impact, engine parameters, suspensions and electronics systems that determine vehicle balance, as well as the influence of mechanical damage on the car's drivability.
- Unreal Engine 4 guarantees photorealistic rendering and an accurate representation of scenarios, car materials and weather conditions. Thanks to the multi-channel audio sampling of real GT cars, the game conveys captivating and immersive acoustic surroundings and realistic environmental effects.
- Even the secondary details are faithfully reproduced to make you feel the thrill of being in the cockpit of a real racing car. Doors, windshield wipers, headlights, racing lights, racing equipment and control devices such as ABS, traction control, engine ignition and ECU mapping, are all under the driver’s management to assure the best performance and offer the player total control of the car.
- Thanks to Laserscan technology, every official circuit is recreated with the utmost accuracy: all curbs and details perfectly fit their real counterparts to grant a gaming experience as faithful to reality as possible.
- A well-structured ranking system will evaluate individual performance and driving behaviour to reward the most virtuous drivers and promote fair play in online competitions. The matchmaking function makes sure that you can compete with opponents of similar skill level and easily find online races to join, while the leaderboards will allow you to compare single-lap performance with virtual pilots from around the world with the same car, circuit and weather conditions.
- Install and open Content Manager, then choose its server-management or server-creation area.
- Create a new server preset and select the track, layout, car list, practice, qualifying, race, weather, assists, damage, and player limit you want.
- Set a clear server name and, for a private event, add a password. Keep the name stable so friends can find it.
- Save the configuration and use Pack. Content Manager exports the configuration and data files needed by the server.
- Extract the generated package into the server root. On Windows, the usual location is the
serverdirectory inside the Assetto Corsa Steam installation. - Start the server executable from that root. Keep the console window open while testing; it shows loading errors, missing content, and connection attempts.
- Join from another PC, or ask a friend outside your home network to test the listing before announcing the event.
The package must include every server-side file referenced by the preset. If a car or track loads locally but is absent from the server root, clients may see the server and then fail when loading the session.
How to host from a dedicated server folder
A dedicated folder separates server files from your everyday game installation. This makes backups, migration to another machine, and running multiple configurations easier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Create a dedicated server directory with a descriptive name, such as one folder per league or event.
- Build and test the configuration in Content Manager.
- Use Pack to export the configuration and data, then extract the package into the dedicated directory.
- Copy or reference the required cars, tracks, and configuration files according to the server implementation’s documentation.
- Launch the server executable from that directory and record the console output.
- Back up the entire folder before changing car versions, track layouts, or rules.
This method takes more initial organisation than launching inside Content Manager, but it gives an advanced operator clearer control over files, updates, automated starts, and moving the server to another Windows machine or hosted environment.
Using AssettoServer instead of the default executable
AssettoServer is an alternative server implementation. Its documented workflow is to create the configuration in Content Manager, click Pack, extract the archive into the server root, and replace the default acServer.exe with AssettoServer’s executable. Follow the release’s own file and configuration instructions when doing this; do not mix executables and configuration files from unrelated versions.

- As with its predecessor, Assetto Corsa EVO will include cars from different classes spanning across years of motoring history. From road cars, classics, hypercars, and race cars. The most iconic representation of the automotive and motorsport world. Each vehicle is reproduced through Kunos in-house physics and graphic engine simulating mechanical, electronic, and aerodynamic performance, combined with the fidelity of the circuits created using Laserscan technology
- In Early Access 1 you will be able to experience a range of vehicles, tracks and game modes that will evolve on the road to our full 1.0 launch.
Steam authentication
The default Assetto Corsa server does not use the Steam API to verify that a connected player is the account they claim to be. AssettoServer can use Steam Auth to prevent SteamID spoofing. To enable that feature, configure it in extra_cfg.yml and meet both documented client requirements: Custom Shaders Patch 0.1.75 or newer and Content Manager 0.8.2297.38573 or newer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Steam Auth protects identity; it does not solve missing mods, blocked ports, incompatible versions, or poor latency. Treat it as an additional control for a managed server, not as a prerequisite for casual public play.
Making an internet-hosted server reachable
Starting the executable is only half of hosting. Players on the internet must be able to reach the server through the Windows firewall and, in most homes, the router’s NAT. The exact port numbers depend on the server implementation and your generated configuration, so copy the values from that configuration and its documentation rather than applying an unverified universal list.
Windows firewall checklist
- When Windows asks whether the server may communicate, allow it on the network profile you actually use.
- If no prompt appears, create an inbound rule for the server executable or for the configured protocol and ports.
- Allow the same executable through any third-party security suite.
- After changing a rule, restart the server and test from a different network.
Router and NAT checklist
- Give the server PC a stable local address, preferably with a DHCP reservation.
- Forward each port shown in the server’s configuration to that local address, using the specified protocol.
- Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. If it does, ordinary port forwarding may not provide a public inbound path.
- Do not expose unrelated administration ports. Forward only what the server requires.
- Test with a friend on mobile broadband or another external connection; testing from the same home network can give a misleading result.
Some routers do not support connecting to your own public address from inside the network. In that case, use a second external connection for the test or ask a friend to verify the listing.

- The Monte Carlo Rally is famous for unpredictable weather, featuring snow, ice, and dry asphalt. It tests drivers' skills and adaptability, making it one of the most challenging rallies in the world.
- This iconic location is being delivered as two fully laser-scanned stages, Col de Turini and Sisteron including fully dynamic weather conditions.
Which hosting method should you choose?
| Method | Setup time | Portability | Configuration control | Mod support | Authentication | Networking responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Game’s standard multiplayer server | Lowest for joining; simple for a basic host | Limited to the normal installation | Basic session options | Works when every client has matching content | Uses the default server’s identity model | Firewall and NAT still apply for internet hosting |
| Content Manager server preset | Fastest practical route for a first-time host | Preset can be packed and moved | Detailed event, rule, and content settings | Convenient for modded cars and tracks | Depends on the server implementation | Host must configure firewall and router access |
| Dedicated server folder | More initial setup | Best portability and backup options | Highest control over files and multiple instances | Good for advanced mod collections | Depends on the executable and configuration | Host manages the complete network path |
| AssettoServer executable | Moderate; requires replacing the default executable | Portable when the folder is self-contained | Advanced configuration through its files | Designed for managed, mod-heavy servers | Optional Steam Auth with specified CSP and Content Manager versions | Same firewall and NAT obligations, plus implementation-specific settings |
Choose Content Manager for a one-off league night or your first private server. Choose a dedicated folder when you need repeatable backups, multiple instances, or migration. Choose AssettoServer when its features, performance model, or Steam authentication fit your community and you are prepared to maintain its versioned configuration.
Troubleshooting multiplayer connection problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Server is visible but joining fails immediately | Missing or mismatched car, track, or dependency | Compare exact mod versions and replace altered files with the operator’s package. |
| Server does not appear in the browser | Server still starting, private listing, blocked ports, or incorrect filter | Clear filters, confirm the server name, inspect the console, and test from an external network. |
| Loading stops at a track or car screen | Corrupt installation or incompatible content | Verify the base game in Steam, reinstall the named mod, and confirm the required layout. |
| Friends on the same home network can join, but internet friends cannot | Router NAT or firewall is blocking inbound traffic | Check the configured ports, local address reservation, Windows rules, and carrier-grade NAT. |
| Players are kicked after an update | Client and server versions no longer match | Restore the previous tested package or update every participant and the server together. |
| Steam Auth refuses a player | Unsupported CSP or Content Manager version, or authentication not enabled correctly | Use CSP 0.1.75 or newer, Content Manager 0.8.2297.38573 or newer, and verify extra_cfg.yml. |
| High ping, rubber-banding, or frequent timeouts | Unstable connection, saturated upload, or distant server | Stop background uploads, test latency, use wired networking, and reduce the host’s load. |
When a mod appears installed but still fails
Check the folder path first. Assetto Corsa distinguishes car folders, track folders, layouts, and data files; placing an archive one directory too high can leave the content invisible to the game. Remove duplicate versions with similar names, then install the operator’s known-good package. Do not rename folders unless the server documentation explicitly permits it.
When the server crashes during startup
Read the first error in the server console rather than the final shutdown message. A missing track layout, malformed configuration value, unsupported weather option, or absent car can trigger later errors. Revert the last change, start with one official car and track, and add mod content one item at a time.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist for a reliable race night
- Decide whether the event uses official content only or a fixed mod package.
- Publish one server name, password, track layout, car list, and content version to all drivers.
- Test the complete session with at least one player outside the host’s home network.
- Start the server early enough to resolve firewall, NAT, and loading errors.
- Keep a backup of the working server folder and configuration.
- Freeze versions until the event ends; update after testing, not immediately before a race.
- Give drivers a fallback contact method in case the server disappears from the browser.
Key answers at a glance
- Can you play without Content Manager? Yes. The normal game launcher and a compatible server are enough for basic multiplayer.
- Do you need Custom Shaders Patch? Only when the server or mod requires it, or when an AssettoServer host enables Steam Auth under its documented version requirements.
- What causes most join failures? Different car or track files, missing layouts, and server versions that do not match the client.
- What causes most hosting failures? Firewall or router/NAT reachability problems, incorrect server paths, and incomplete packed content.
