Choose Spotify Listen Along for synchronized Spotify playback, Watch Together for YouTube during a voice call, screen sharing for a local player or browser, and a music bot for a server-wide queue. If you only want private background music, play it normally through headphones without transmitting it through Discord.
Which Discord music method should you use?
| What you want | Best first choice | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Listen to Spotify together | Spotify Listen Along | Listeners need Spotify Premium, and it cannot be used during voice chat. |
| Play YouTube music in a voice call | Watch Together | It uses YouTube’s embedded player and does not play arbitrary local files. |
| Stream a local app, browser tab, or audio file | Screen Share | Audio support and quality vary by device; Linux audio sharing is currently unavailable. |
| Run a shared server queue | A music app from Discord’s App Directory | Commands, permissions, sources, and reliability vary by app. |
| Listen privately while talking | Use your normal music player | Other Discord users will not hear it. |
Connecting Spotify to Discord only displays listening activity unless you actively start Listen Along. It does not automatically pipe Spotify audio into a voice channel.

Play Spotify together with Listen Along
Listen Along is the cleanest official option when everyone wants synchronized Spotify playback. Spotify and Discord documentation state that listeners need Spotify Premium for Listen Along; free accounts may encounter silence or interruptions during advertisements. This requirement applies to Listen Along, not necessarily to every Spotify activity-display feature.
Spotify Premium is therefore the most direct paid upgrade for this particular method. Prices and introductory offers vary by country, account, and date, so check Spotify’s current page before subscribing.

Connect Spotify to Discord
- Open the Discord desktop app.
- Open User Settings.
- Select Connections.
- Select the Spotify icon.
- Sign in to Spotify and authorize the connection.
- Optionally enable the setting that displays Spotify as activity on your profile.
Discord’s connection instructions are available in its official Spotify Connection guide.
Start Listen Along
- Open Spotify and start playing a song.
- In Discord, open the friend’s profile or mini-profile who is listening to Spotify.
- Select Listen Along, if the option appears.
- Alternatively, select the + button in a Discord text box while Spotify is playing and send a listening invitation.
- The recipient selects Join.
Listen Along is intended for text chat rather than an active voice conversation. Spotify says it cannot be used while voice chatting. Discord also documents a behavior in which Spotify may pause after you transmit with your microphone for 30 seconds. If the group needs to keep speaking while music plays, use Watch Together, screen sharing, or a bot instead.
Spotify Listen Along troubleshooting
- The button is missing: Start a song directly in the Spotify client and make sure Spotify has an active playback device selected.
- Listeners hear silence: Confirm that listeners meet the Premium requirement and that the host is actually using Listen Along rather than merely displaying Spotify activity.
- Spotify will not start: Reopen the invitation after starting playback and check the selected Spotify device.
- The session ends on mobile: Keep the phone awake through the end of the song. If the device sleeps and Spotify disconnects, the session can end.
- Tracks stop or change abruptly: Crossfade can cause abrupt stops for listeners.
- Playback is out of sync: System clocks that are not synchronized can contribute to timing problems.

Start Watch Together
- Join the target voice channel, or open a DM or group call.
- Open the App Launcher or Activities menu.
- Select Watch Together.
- Search for a YouTube video or paste a YouTube link.
- Start playback and invite other participants to join the Activity.
- Add more videos to the shared playlist when needed.
The host can use playlist controls and the lock option to decide whether other participants can control playback. Removing the current video advances to the next video in the playlist. Volume is local: muting or changing the YouTube player’s volume affects only that participant. Watch Together does not support signing in to a YouTube account inside the Activity. Consult Discord’s Watch Together FAQ for current controls.
Not every video is guaranteed to work. Embedded-player restrictions, advertisements, regional availability, removed videos, age restrictions, and YouTube playback behavior can affect a session.
If Watch Together has video but no sound
- Check that the YouTube player is not muted.
- Check that the Discord Activity or stream is not muted.
- Confirm that Discord and your operating system use the intended output device.
- Make sure the participant joined the Activity, rather than remaining only in the voice channel.
- Try another available YouTube video to rule out a restriction or removed upload.
Screen-share a music app or browser
Screen sharing is the most flexible official method for a local music player, browser tab, audio file, or source that does not work with Watch Together. It also lets you remain in a voice conversation.

Desktop and browser steps
- Join the voice channel or call.
- Select Screen Share or Go Live.
- Select the individual music application or browser window instead of the entire desktop when possible.
- Confirm that audio sharing is enabled.
- Select Go Live.
- Ask listeners to open your stream and confirm that it is not muted.
- Adjust the music application’s volume and the Discord stream volume independently.
Discord’s current Go Live and Screen Share documentation says audio capture is supported on Windows desktop, macOS desktop, Chrome, and mobile clients, while audio sharing is unavailable on Linux. The documentation was updated June 19, 2026; recheck it if your client or operating system changes. Discord’s documentation also states that up to 50 people can share video or screens at once in a Discord voice chat.

Platform and privacy notes
- Windows and macOS: Application-window sharing is generally the best choice for music.
- Chrome: Share the relevant browser window or tab where Discord offers audio capture.
- Mobile: Controls and operating-system permissions vary by device and app version.
- Linux: Do not expect normal Discord screen sharing to transmit application audio; Discord’s current support page lists Linux audio sharing as unavailable.
- Privacy: Sharing the entire desktop can expose notifications, private messages, or unrelated windows. Share only the music application when possible.
If screen share has no audio
- Stop the stream and select the correct application window again.
- Enable audio sharing before going live.
- Check that the viewer has not muted the stream.
- Confirm Discord is using the same intended output device as the operating system and music app.
- Review operating-system screen-recording or audio permissions.
- If you are on Linux, use Watch Together, Spotify Listen Along, or another supported arrangement instead.
Use a Discord music bot for a server queue
Music bots are third-party Discord applications, not one universal built-in Discord command. The Discord App Directory currently lists music applications; one current listing advertises commands such as /play, /connect, and /skip, along with queue, loop, autoplay, volume, and seek controls. Those commands belong to that bot and should not be treated as universal Discord commands.
Generic bot setup
- Open the server’s App Directory or a current official bot listing.
- Review the bot’s permissions, supported platforms, supported sources, privacy information, and documentation.
- Select Add App or the equivalent installation control.
- Choose the target server.
- Authorize only the permissions the bot needs.
- Join a voice channel.
- Use the bot’s documented slash command, commonly something like
/play. - Enter a search query or supported URL, then use the bot’s own queue, pause, skip, volume, and disconnect controls.
A bot may accept a Spotify or Apple Music link as a search or reference input without streaming directly from that service. Supported sources can change. A server may also need to grant permissions to connect, speak, send messages, use application commands, or manage messages.
Use a bot when a community needs a persistent, command-controlled queue. It is a poor fit for a one-off listening session, a privacy-sensitive server, strict permission environments, or anyone who needs guaranteed support for a specific streaming service. Avoid old tutorials and arbitrary invite links; check the current App Directory listing and the bot’s current documentation.
Listen privately during a Discord call
If only you should hear the music, join the Discord call normally, open Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, a local player, or another audio app, and play it through headphones. Do not start screen sharing or add a bot. Headphones reduce the chance that speakers will feed music back into your microphone.

Fix common Discord music problems
“I can see Spotify, but nobody hears music”
Spotify activity display is not voice-channel playback. Start playback in Spotify, select the intended playback device, reopen the Discord profile or invitation, and start Listen Along from text chat. Confirm the listener’s Premium eligibility. If voice chat is essential, switch to Watch Together, screen sharing, or a bot.
“Spotify stops when I talk”
Discord’s Spotify documentation describes a possible pause after microphone transmission for 30 seconds while Spotify is playing. Treat this as a documented integration limitation, not automatically as an internet or microphone failure. Use another method when simultaneous speaking and shared music are required.
“The bot joined but is silent”
- Confirm it can connect and speak in the channel.
- Make sure it is in the same voice channel as the listeners.
- Use the current command syntax for that specific bot.
- Check whether the requested source is supported.
- Verify that the bot is not paused, disconnected, rate-limited, or restricted by server permissions.
- Check the bot’s current official command list.
“Music is too loud or people cannot talk”
- Use headphones rather than nearby speakers.
- Lower the music player’s volume instead of pushing Discord stream volume to maximum.
- Share a separate application window rather than the full desktop.
- Ask listeners to adjust their own local volume when using Watch Together.
- If voices are clear but music is missing, recheck stream muting, application selection, and output-device routing.
Best method by situation
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Spotify users want synchronized music and can use text chat | Spotify Listen Along |
| A group wants YouTube music while continuing to talk | Watch Together |
| The source is a local player, browser tab, or file | Screen share the application with audio enabled |
| A community needs queue and skip commands | Install a currently supported music app from the App Directory |
| Only one person wants background music | Play it privately through headphones |
| The host uses Linux and needs shared application audio | Do not rely on Discord screen-share audio; choose Watch Together, Listen Along, or a supported bot |
Copyright, service terms, and server rules
Discord’s features explain how audio is synchronized or transmitted; they do not automatically authorize every public or commercial music use. A private group session and a public broadcast can involve different rights and platform rules. Use music in accordance with the relevant service’s terms, copyright requirements, and server policies. Third-party bots may have additional source-specific restrictions.
