The right way to keep nature sounds or meditation music playing without a black screen depends on what you mean: on a phone, you can lock the screen while audio continues; on some TVs, you can turn off the picture while leaving the sound on. For ambient noise on iPhone, try Apple’s built-in Background Sounds. For music or video-app audio on a phone, background playback may require a subscription. For TV listening, Roku TVs have a documented screen-off feature.
Choose the method for your device and audio source

Play ambient sounds on an iPhone with the screen locked
Apple’s Background Sounds feature is a good fit when you want a sound such as rain or ocean waves rather than a specific YouTube recording or music catalog. Apple’s current iPhone guide describes the sound file as downloading to the device, so playback does not depend on keeping a video open.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Background Sounds.
- Turn on Background Sounds and choose a sound. Adjust its volume to suit your room and listening level.
- Check the lock behavior: choose whether sounds stop when the iPhone is locked. Leave them set to continue if you want to turn off the display without ending playback.
- If you want playback to end automatically, set the available timer option before settling in. You can also add Background Sounds to Control Center for quicker access.
- Lock the iPhone and confirm the sound continues. Menu wording can change with iOS updates, so follow the current labels on your device.
Use this option for ambient sound, not as a way to play a particular YouTube track. Its selected sound is downloaded to the iPhone. See Apple’s instructions for Background Sounds.
Keep YouTube or YouTube Music audio playing on a phone
YouTube’s documentation ties mobile background playback to a YouTube Premium membership signed into the relevant app. YouTube Music Help says Premium members can listen to music and podcasts while using other apps or with the screen off. - Open the official YouTube or YouTube Music mobile app and sign in to the account with the qualifying membership.
- Start the music, podcast, or other audio you want to hear.
- Lock the phone or switch to another app. If playback stops, verify the signed-in account and membership, then check whether background play is available in your region and app.
- For bedtime listening, set a timer in the playback app if one is available. Test the timer and lock behavior before relying on them overnight.
Do not assume every account has the same controls or that any video will keep playing in the background without the required membership. YouTube’s help page describes the membership condition for mobile background play; it does not establish a particular price or plan bundle.
Turn off the picture but keep audio on a Roku TV
If you mean listening through a television with its picture dark, Roku documents a screen-off listening feature on Roku TVs. Its support page names apps including YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, and Pandora. The instructions apply to Roku TVs; they are not a promise that an external Roku player or another TV brand has the same control.

- Start the audio in a supported streaming app on the Roku TV.
- Use the screen-off control or voice/control instructions in Roku’s current support article. The precise control may depend on the TV and its current software, so use the instructions shown there for your device.
- Confirm that audio continues after the picture turns off. Use the same TV control to restore the picture when you want it back.
Use audio-only behavior and timers for sleep listening
Spotify video podcasts and Canvas
Spotify says video podcast visuals play only while the content is on screen; navigating away or locking the device leaves audio playing. Spotify also says Canvas visuals do not continue in the background and can be disabled in settings. This guidance covers those Spotify behaviors, not every app or every Spotify surface. Calm playlists, meditations, and Scene sounds
Calm documents sleep audio such as music, guided meditation, Sleep Stories, and background Scene sounds, along with playlist timers and screen-off listening. Its “Play sounds outside the app” setting controls how long a Scene sound continues after a meditation or Sleep Story ends; that is distinct from a playlist timer. - Set an app or system timer if you want playback to stop after a chosen interval.
- Test the specific audio source with the screen locked before using it at bedtime.
- If audio stops unexpectedly, check the app’s timer and background-play settings, then your device’s current power or playback settings. Behavior is not identical across apps and devices.
