A scheduled YouTube stream can give viewers an upcoming watch page and, for eligible creators, a trailer—but those are separate from a countdown graphic in the live video.
Set up a countdown scene in OBS
- Create two scenes. In OBS, make a scene named Starting soon and a separate scene for the meditation. Scenes combine sources such as text, browser pages, images, and media files. See the OBS Sources Guide.
- Add the timer to Starting soon. Choose one of the methods below, then position and size it in the preview so it is legible in the program output.
- Start the YouTube stream with Starting soon visible. Check the program output—not only the editing preview—to confirm the timer is visible. If you use background audio, make sure it is intentional and that you have the rights to use it.
- Switch to the meditation scene at zero. A timer may only display a countdown; unless your setup is configured to switch scenes, make the transition manually as part of your host checklist.
- Rehearse privately or as an unlisted stream before going public. Check when the timer starts, whether it resets unexpectedly, how it behaves at zero, and whether the transition leaves a blank screen or an unintended loop.
Choose how the timer appears
Browser source: a styled countdown page
Add a Browser Source to the Starting soon scene and enter the countdown page URL. OBS embeds the web page in the scene and lets you set its URL and viewport dimensions; the documented defaults are an 800 × 600 viewport and a custom frame rate of 30 FPS, not recommendations for a full-screen overlay. Size and crop the source to suit your layout. Because the timer depends on the page and its network or service behavior, test that it loads and counts down correctly before the session. Avoid assuming it will keep working if the page is unavailable.
Text source: a minimal display
Add an OBS text source for a simple remaining-time display. OBS text sources can read their displayed text from a file, so a timer mechanism can update that file while the stream is running. The text source does not itself provide a countdown; you need a script or another method to update the text. Source names and options can vary by operating system. See OBS Text Sources.

Countdown video: a fixed, prepared timer
Add a pre-rendered countdown as a media source. This is straightforward when you want a fixed visual and duration, but the file will not adapt if you start late or need to extend the arrival period. Test playback and decide how you will switch scenes at the end. OBS lists media sources in its Sources Guide.
Custom scripting
OBS supports Lua and Python scripts through Tools > Scripts, which can be used to build custom behavior. Scripting calls and error handling require care; treat community scripts as third-party code, not as official OBS features. Consult the OBS Scripting Guide before relying on a script during a live session.

Set the tone for a meditation audience
Use the countdown as a quiet arrival period: show the remaining time clearly and, if useful, a brief prompt such as “Settle in; we’ll begin shortly.” Decide ahead of time whether the pre-roll is silent or includes ambient audio, and use audio you are permitted to use. The cited platform and OBS documentation does not establish an ideal countdown length or a meditation-specific design standard, so choose a duration that suits your session and rehearse it.
Know the difference between a live countdown and YouTube’s pre-show features
Scheduling a YouTube Live stream can create an upcoming watch page where viewers may choose “Notify me.” Eligible creators can also add a trailer to a scheduled stream. YouTube’s stated trailer requirements are a duration of 15 seconds to 3 minutes and eligibility of more than 1,000 subscribers with no Community Guideline strikes. These features affect the watch page before the broadcast; an OBS countdown is part of the video sent during the broadcast. Check YouTube’s live-stream settings help for the current details.

YouTube’s documented native countdown theme is for Premieres: creators can select a theme and length when scheduling a video as a Premiere. A Premiere is a different format from an ordinary live guided meditation, so this is not a customizable countdown overlay for your OBS live program. See YouTube’s Premiere guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- The timer is missing from the live output: Confirm the Starting soon scene is selected and inspect the OBS program output. Check that the source is visible and not hidden behind another source.
- The browser countdown is blank or stalled: Confirm the URL and network connection, then load the page in the Browser Source again and rehearse. A browser-based timer depends on the page and its service behavior.
- The text stays unchanged: A text source that reads a file only displays its contents; it does not count down on its own. Verify that your timer mechanism is updating the file and that OBS is reading the intended file.
- The timer resets or continues after a scene change: Check the behavior in rehearsal and choose whether the timer should persist, restart, or be replaced by the meditation scene. Do not assume every timer method resets at the same time.
- The end of the countdown shows a blank frame or loops: Check the media file’s ending and playback settings, or prepare a manual scene switch. Test the exact transition before going public.
- The pre-roll audio is distracting or inappropriate: Preview the full countdown with audio enabled, and confirm that any music or ambient recording is licensed for your use.
