In most cases, you cannot play an Origin-bought game through a current, supported Windows or Mac installation without the EA app. EA has retired Origin and moved its PC and Mac purchases to the EA app under the same EA Account. If your real goal is to play without an internet connection, that is different: compatible games can use the EA app’s offline mode after an online launch.

First, identify where you bought the game
“Origin game” usually describes a game bought or redeemed through the former Origin client. The important distinction is between the EA Account, which holds the entitlement, and the launcher, which provides access to it.
- Origin or EA app purchase: The game is tied to your EA Account and normally must be installed and launched through the EA app.
- Steam purchase: Steam may start the game, but many EA releases still require EA app installation, authentication, and background use.
- Epic Games Store purchase: Epic may provide the storefront, but EA Account linking and EA app background use may still be required.
- Physical PC copy: The result depends on the game’s activation system, patches, operating system, and whether required services still operate.
- EA Play or another subscription: This provides access only while the relevant membership and catalog entitlement remain active; it is not necessarily permanent ownership.
Buying the same game on another storefront does not automatically convert or transfer your existing Origin entitlement.

The official way to access an old Origin purchase
- Download the current EA app for Windows or Mac.
- Sign in with the EA Account originally used for the Origin purchase.
- Open your Library and install the game.
- Launch it once while connected to the internet so the account and game can be authenticated.
EA currently lists Windows 10/11 64-bit and macOS Catalina or newer as platform baselines, but requirements can change. Compatibility is also title-specific: owning a game does not guarantee that it has a Mac version, and a Mac purchase can only be downloaded where the game supports Mac.
If the game is not in your Library, do not repurchase it immediately. Sign out and try other email addresses you may have used with Origin. Check that the entitlement is a full game rather than DLC, an expansion, or subscription access; EA says those may not appear as full Library entries. For a third-party retailer purchase, redeem the product code. Also check hidden games, pending transactions, linked Steam or Epic accounts, and any account restrictions. If the entitlement still cannot be found, contact EA Support about missing games with your order details.
How to play an Origin game without an internet connection
You can sometimes play offline, but this does not bypass the EA app. The app must authenticate the game first, and offline play works only for games that do not require a permanent internet connection.

- Install the game and launch it once while online.
- Close the game normally.
- Open the EA app again.
- On Windows, open the top-left menu. On Mac, open Account.
- Choose Go offline.
- Start the installed game if it supports offline play.
EA states that offline availability lasts for 30 days after the last online launch. Online multiplayer, cloud-dependent features, account checks, and connected services will not work. If you close the EA app, it returns online the next time it opens, so offline mode is not a permanent way to remove the launcher.

Can Steam replace the EA app?
Usually, no. A Steam copy is a separate license, and EA says a game purchased through the EA app cannot be transferred to Steam. Even when you buy a new copy on Steam, the game may still depend on EA’s software.
Before buying, inspect the individual Steam listing for wording such as “EA online activation and EA app software installation and background use required.” Requirements vary by title and edition. A Steam listing that does not show an EA app requirement may indicate a different setup, but it should not be treated as a guarantee for every update or edition.
Can Epic Games Store replace the EA app?
Epic is not a universal EA launcher replacement. EA’s legal disclosures indicate that EA app installation and background use may still be required for EA games bought through Epic. You may also need to link Epic to an EA Account.

Check which EA Account is linked before redeeming or buying another copy. Linking the wrong account can make ownership appear to be missing or create confusion about which entitlement you are using. See EA’s legal disclosures and the specific Epic listing for the game’s current requirements.

Legitimate exceptions
There are possible exceptions, but they are separate releases rather than methods for converting an Origin license:
- Standalone or DRM-free edition: A particular game may be sold in another edition that does not use EA app authentication. Verify that claim on the current seller’s listing.
- Older physical release: Some boxed games may use older activation or disc-based DRM, but a disc does not automatically mean there is no launcher or online check.
- Title-specific storefront version: Some releases may have different technical requirements on Steam, Epic, GOG, or another store.
A storefront such as GOG can be worth checking for a separate DRM-free edition, but availability is title-specific. Such an edition may lack multiplayer, achievements, cloud saves, or other features, and your Origin entitlement generally cannot be transferred to it.
What direct executable launching can and cannot do
Opening a game’s .exe directly may work with some older or differently licensed games. It is not a dependable general solution. If the game requires EA online activation, account validation, or EA app background services, the executable will usually return a launcher or authentication error.
Do not treat a desktop shortcut as an official bypass. Avoid old Origin installers, modified clients, replacement DLLs, cracked executables, and unverified “launcher bypass” downloads. They are unsupported and can create malware, account-security, licensing, and save-data risks.

Reduce automatic EA app behavior
If your objection is the app opening at startup rather than its existence, you may be able to reduce that behavior. Check the EA app’s current settings for automatic startup, downloads, notifications, and overlays. You can also review Startup apps in Windows or Login Items in macOS.
Menu names and available switches change between EA app versions, so verify the labels in your installed build. Disabling automatic startup can make the app less intrusive, but it does not remove a game’s launcher, authentication, or background-service requirement. Stopping required processes after launch can also cause online games or authenticated titles to fail.

If you see a link2ea error
- Close and relaunch the EA app.
- Restart the computer.
- Use the game tile’s three-dot menu and choose Repair, where available.
- Restart both Steam and the EA app if you own the game on Steam.
- Try launching Steam and the EA app as administrator.
- Confirm that Steam or Epic is linked to the EA Account that owns the game.
- Reinstall the EA app if its installation or files are corrupted.
These steps follow EA’s EA app error-code guidance. For additional launch options, the EA app provides a game tile’s three-dot menu, then View Properties and Advanced launch options, where supported.

Restart the app and computer first, then repair the installation. Check for pending updates, account-linking problems, and title-specific system requirements. On Mac, confirm that the game actually supports your macOS version and Mac hardware. On Windows, confirm that the current 64-bit requirements are met.

Linux, Steam Deck, and virtual machines
Running a game through Wine, Proton, or a virtual machine is a compatibility question, not a guaranteed EA app bypass. A Windows release that requires EA authentication may still require the EA app or its services under that compatibility layer.
EA directs Steam Deck owners to the individual Steam store page’s compatibility information. Installing the EA app as a non-Steam game is an unsupported, version-sensitive workaround, so it should not be presented as a reliable solution without current title-specific testing.
