How you play Overcooked multiplayer depends on the edition: the original Overcooked is local-only, Overcooked! 2 supports up to four players locally or online, and Overcooked! All You Can Eat adds cross-platform online play. For crossplay, every player needs All You Can Eat.

How to play Overcooked locally
Original Overcooked
Start the game on one system and have everyone join locally. There is no online mode to enable or invite players to: Team17 says the original was built as local co-op and that the infrastructure for online multiplayer is not there. Team17’s FAQ

Have players join from the game on the same console or computer. On PC, Mac, and Linux, two players can share a keyboard locally. Local players count toward the four-player session limit.

How to play Overcooked online with friends
Overcooked! 2: choose the right mode
- Arcade or Versus: Use the in-game lobby or matchmaking system.
- Story or campaign: Invite people from your friends list.
Up to three players can share one system while other players join online, with four players total. Team17’s FAQ describes platform-specific joining: Switch friends can search for and join a session with two or three local players; on Steam, PS4, and Xbox, online players can join through matchmaking. All You Can Eat: matchmaking or private session
- Arcade: Choose matchmaking to find players, or create a private game with friends.
- Campaign: Invite friends to play.
Enable crossplay in the game settings if your group is using different platforms. Crossplay can also be turned off there. Every person joining must be playing All You Can Eat; owning Overcooked! 2 separately does not let someone join an All You Can Eat session. Team17’s FAQ

Can Overcooked players on different platforms play together?
All You Can Eat is the edition Team17 identifies as supporting cross-platform play across Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. The publisher says players on all platforms can play together when crossplay is enabled. The game editions are not interchangeable for this: all players in the session need All You Can Eat.
For base Overcooked! 2, do not count on console-to-console crossplay. Team17’s support information distinguishes it from All You Can Eat and also describes a Steam crossplay branch for playing with Epic users. That branch requires matching the relevant version branch for Steam friends. Because the exact branch steps may change, check Team17 Support for current instructions before changing an installation.

Voice chat and controls
In Overcooked! 2, Team17 lists built-in in-game chat on Xbox One and PS4. Steam and Switch players need a separate voice service, such as Steam voice chat, Skype, or Discord, according to the publisher’s FAQ. Each remote player also needs their own controller or keyboard.
All You Can Eat includes in-game voice chat; enable it in settings. Team17 says Switch players need a headset connected to the console’s audio jack for voice chat. Team17’s FAQ

If a friend cannot join
- Check the edition first. An All You Can Eat session requires All You Can Eat for every player; the separate Overcooked! 2 game will not join it.
- Check the mode. In Overcooked! 2, use friend invites for story/campaign; Arcade and Versus use the in-game lobby or matchmaking.
- Check platform expectations. Cross-platform play is stated for All You Can Eat. Do not assume the base Overcooked! 2 supports console-to-console crossplay.
- Check crossplay settings. In All You Can Eat, crossplay must be enabled for a cross-platform group.
- For Steam/Epic Overcooked! 2 play, consult Team17’s current support instructions before switching version branches; friends using that branch need matching versions.
Team17’s detailed FAQs for Overcooked! 2 and All You Can Eat date from 2018 and 2020 respectively, so current platform service or account requirements may vary. Check the relevant platform’s current online-play requirements if an otherwise compatible session still cannot connect.
