Short answer: old SafeDisc games that depend on the secdrv.sys driver generally will not pass their disc check on fully updated Windows 10. Compatibility mode cannot restore a blocked kernel driver. SecuROM is different: its behavior depends on the game, protection version, activation system, and available patches.
Try an official patch or legitimate digital re-release first. If the physical-disc version still requires obsolete DRM, use a reputable game-specific fix or an isolated legacy Windows PC or virtual machine rather than weakening the security of your everyday computer.

Why these games stopped working
Many CD and DVD games released from the late 1990s through the late 2000s checked the original disc before launching. SafeDisc commonly performed that check through the SECDRV.SYS kernel-mode driver. A game could install normally but fail immediately when Windows refused to load the driver.
Microsoft disabled or blocked the vulnerable driver through the 2015 MS15-097 security update. Microsoft documented a temporary workaround for some older Windows installations, but re-enabling the driver reduces system security. See the Microsoft security bulletin.

This is not the same as an ordinary compatibility problem. Compatibility mode can adjust application behavior, permissions, display handling, and older Windows assumptions. It cannot make modern Windows load an obsolete driver that is missing, blocked, or rejected.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. It is therefore a particularly poor platform on which to lower security protections merely to run a disc check.
SafeDisc and SecuROM are not interchangeable
SafeDisc
SafeDisc is most closely associated with physical CD/DVD releases and launch-time disc authentication. Older versions commonly rely on SECDRV.SYS. The exact behavior varies by game and protection build, so the release year alone is not proof that a particular executable uses the driver.

On an updated Windows 10 installation, treat an older SafeDisc game as incompatible if its disc check requires secdrv.sys. A message such as “Please log in with administrator privileges and try again” can indicate a failed SafeDisc driver check, but it is not conclusive.
SecuROM
SecuROM covers several different implementations:
- Disc-based SecuROM: authenticates the original physical disc.
- Product Activation: may contact an online activation service.
- Release-control or activation variants: may depend on certificates, launchers, or publisher servers.
Some SecuROM games work with official patches; others had their DRM removed in later releases; some depend on activation servers that no longer operate. Do not automatically apply a SafeDisc solution to a SecuROM game. Check the exact title and executable version in the PCGamingWiki SecuROM reference.

How to identify the protection
- Read the game manual, readme, original support page, and patch notes.
- Check the exact game entry on the PCGamingWiki.
- Inspect the installation disc and game directory for clues such as
SECDRV.SYS,.ICDfiles,clokspl.exe,clcd16.dll,clcd32.dll, ordplayerx.dll. - Use the error as a clue, not proof. An activation or internet-verification error points more toward SecuROM Product Activation; an administrator or original-disc error can have several causes.
- Check the executable’s Properties and the installed files. Back up saves and the original executable before changing anything.
Do not upload executables to random analysis sites or download unknown “DRM removal” utilities. Untrusted replacement executables can contain malware, modify game files, and create legal or support problems.
Try these fixes first
1. Install the correct official patch
Apply the latest patch before experimenting with compatibility settings. Confirm that it matches the precise region, retail edition, expansion, and executable version. Some publisher patches remove or replace obsolete DRM.
Back up save files and the original executable first. A patch for the same game title may not apply to every retail release. Microsoft also recommends checking the publisher for updates before using compatibility troubleshooting; see its older-app compatibility guidance.
2. Check for a legitimate digital re-release
A publisher-supported release on a storefront may include a patched executable, updated libraries, a modern launcher, or no original disc check at all. This is normally the safest solution.
Do not assume every digital edition is DRM-free. A Steam release may require Steam, while another edition may remove the disc protection entirely. Verify the specific product listing and requirements. Owning a physical copy also does not automatically guarantee a free digital entitlement; redemption policies are title-specific.

3. Run the program as administrator only when necessary
- Right-click the installer or game executable.
- Select Properties → Compatibility.
- Enable Run this program as an administrator and test it.
This can solve a permissions problem, but it cannot substitute for a missing SafeDisc driver.

- Right-click the actual game executable, not only a desktop shortcut.
- Open Properties → Compatibility.
- Try Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 7.
- If necessary, test Windows Vista or Windows XP Service Pack 3.
- If the game launches with graphical problems, try Disable fullscreen optimizations.
- Use Change high DPI settings only when Windows scaling is causing the problem.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 also provide the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter under Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters. Older Windows 10 builds used Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters.
Compatibility mode may help with old APIs, installers, permissions, and display behavior. It generally will not solve an older SafeDisc check that requires secdrv.sys.

Windows 8 and 8.1 are unsupported, and Windows Vista and 7 are also obsolete. A game working on an unpatched installation does not make that configuration safe or supported.
The historical secdrv.sys workaround
Microsoft documented temporarily enabling the service on affected older Windows versions. This is a historical, security-sensitive workaround—not a normal Windows 10 solution.

Only consider it on an older system that already contains the service and can load it. Create a restore point or full backup, keep the machine offline, and do not use it for email, web browsing, banking, or other sensitive work.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and, on a compatible older installation, run:
sc config secdrv start= demand
sc start secdrvThe space after start= is required by the sc command syntax. After playing, disable the service again:
sc stop secdrv
sc config secdrv start= disabledThese commands help only when a compatible service and driver are already present and Windows permits them to load. If sc start secdrv reports that the service does not exist, stop there. Do not download a replacement .sys file.

SecuROM-specific troubleshooting
- Determine whether the game uses disc authentication or online Product Activation.
- Install the latest official patch for the exact edition.
- Check whether the publisher released a DRM-removal update.
- Confirm whether the original activation servers still operate.
- If certificates are required, obtain them only from Microsoft or the publisher—not from arbitrary certificate bundles.
- Test the patched executable with compatibility settings.
- Check the exact game’s known issues because SecuROM behavior varies substantially by title and version.
- If activation is impossible, look for a legitimate re-release.
Not all SecuROM games fail on Windows 10. The correct conclusion is that SecuROM compatibility is title- and version-dependent.
When the DRM is no longer the problem
A successful disc check does not guarantee that the game will run correctly. Investigate these separate issues:
- No optical drive, unreliable USB optical drive, damaged disc, or copy-protection sectors the drive cannot read.
- A 16-bit installer that cannot run on 64-bit Windows, even though the game itself might.
- A 32-bit installer or launcher with obsolete assumptions.
- Missing DirectPlay or legacy DirectX components.
- Indeo or other obsolete video codecs.
- DirectDraw and other old graphics APIs.
- Resolution, refresh-rate, fullscreen, or widescreen problems.
- Modern antivirus software quarantining an old launcher.
- SecuROM objecting to overlays, debuggers, virtual drives, or monitoring tools.
- Online activation servers that have been retired.
For DirectPlay-specific guidance, see the PCGamingWiki DirectPlay reference. If the game launches but shows a black screen or crashes, graphics, codecs, DirectX, or resolution are more likely causes than DRM.
Safest alternatives, in order
- Official patch: It may update compatibility or remove obsolete protection.
- Publisher-supported digital release: Usually the easiest route when the exact game is available.
- Reputable game-specific community fix: Prefer fixes that do not require disabling Windows security or downloading an unexplained executable.
- Offline legacy PC: A dedicated Windows 7/Vista-era machine can be more realistic for physical media, but keep it isolated, backed up, and away from sensitive accounts.
- Virtual machine: Useful for some application-level problems, but unreliable when the game needs old optical-drive behavior, kernel DRM, 3D acceleration, or an unavailable activation server.
An external USB CD/DVD drive is useful only if the operating system can still authenticate the disc. It will not fix a blocked SafeDisc driver. Likewise, a virtual machine is not guaranteed to reproduce protected optical-drive behavior or old graphics acceleration.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Back up saves, installation files, and the original executable.
- Identify SafeDisc, SecuROM, or another protection system from the exact title and version.
- Install the matching official patch.
- Check for a legitimate digital re-release and verify its DRM requirements.
- Apply compatibility mode to the actual executable.
- Separate launch failures from DirectPlay, DirectX, codec, graphics, installer, disc, and activation failures.
- If the game is old SafeDisc on Windows 10, stop repeating compatibility combinations; they will not restore a missing driver.
- Use a reputable, game-specific fix only if it does not require unsafe security changes.
- For physical-media preservation, move to an offline legacy PC or test a virtual machine after checking its hardware and graphics limitations.
- Never download replacement drivers, arbitrary “No-CD” executables, activation emulators, unofficial Windows images, or random root certificates.
For title-specific startup problems, consult the PCGamingWiki startup troubleshooting guide and the publisher’s support archive. If no supported path remains, a current re-release or isolated preservation setup is safer than weakening a modern everyday PC.
