What works on a PS5—and what does not
Sony’s PlayStation 5 Safety Guide (CFI-71XX) says that PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 format software cannot be played from a disc. That is the rule for standard PS5 support: putting a PS2 disc into a PS5 is not a supported way to play it.
Sony separately documents PS4 game compatibility on PS5, while noting that PS3 discs are unsupported. PS4 compatibility does not add PS2-disc support. Nor does Sony’s disc troubleshooting guidance change the format limitation: it says PS5 consoles cannot play audio CDs or burned discs, but those statements should not be stretched into claims about every possible homebrew disc-reading setup.

In other words, there are two separate questions: “Does the ordinary PS5 system support this disc format?” and “Does a community emulator project provide a way to run PS2 software on some jailbroken PS5 configurations?” The answer to the first is no for PS2 discs. The answer to the second is that PS5SX2 documents a PCSX2-based route, subject to its setup guidance, tested console and firmware combinations, and game notes.
This distinction also helps avoid a common mistaken comparison. Sony’s documented ability to play many PS4 games on PS5 is a supported compatibility feature; it is not evidence that a PS5 can run PS2 discs. Similarly, the fact that PS3 discs are unsupported under standard compatibility does not establish anything about how a homebrew application might handle other media. Treat Sony’s support information as applying to ordinary system software, and treat PS5SX2’s documentation as the only basis here for the community route.
The community emulation route: PS5SX2
PS5SX2 describes itself as a PCSX2 port that runs as a native app on a jailbroken PS5. This is a community software route, not a Sony-supported backward-compatibility feature. Whether it is a practical option for a particular console depends on the project’s documented firmware and model tests, and whether the specific game has been tested.

That description is useful, but it is not a full compatibility promise. “Runs as a native app” describes the project’s stated form on a jailbroken PS5; it does not mean the app is available for every PS5, that every firmware can be jailbroken, or that every PS2 game will run. Nor does describing it as a PCSX2 port mean that every instruction written for PCSX2 on a computer applies unchanged to the PS5 project.
Use the PS5SX2 project’s own current getting-started instructions for any project-specific setup. The project’s tested-firmware table and game notes answer different questions: one is about the console model and firmware combinations the contributors have tried, while the other records game testing. A match in one table does not imply a match in the other. You need to verify both dimensions independently.

The trade-off is straightforward: standard PS5 support is clearly documented but does not include PS2 discs; PS5SX2 describes a possible community route but requires relying on its current documentation and the limits of its tests. If you want a Sony-supported way to insert a PS2 disc and play it, this route does not change the answer. If you are considering community software, do not treat the project’s existence as evidence that your exact console and game are supported.
Check compatibility before you proceed
- Identify your PS5 model and firmware. Consult the current PS5SX2 setup documentation and tested-firmware table. The project says its table covers combinations it has tested; firmware not listed there has not been tried. A listed firmware entry is not proof that a jailbreak is available for every console running it.
- Look up the exact game. Check the project’s current compatibility notes for the game and, where available, its region or version. The project says the listed games were started during testing, not that every listed game is fully playable. It also warns that the list is not a compatibility guarantee and may change as PS5SX2 changes.
- Read PS5SX2’s own getting-started instructions. Follow the project’s current guide for its installation and setup process. Do not substitute a third-party recipe or assume steps from the PC version of PCSX2 apply to the PS5 port.
- Confirm the documented game and BIOS requirements. The PCSX2 FAQ says its PC emulator requires a BIOS dump from an original PS2 and original games. That is PCSX2’s PC guidance; it does not, by itself, establish PS5SX2’s precise requirements or tell you how to use a physical disc with it. Use the PS5SX2 documentation for requirements specific to the PS5 port, and follow the law that applies where you live.
Do these checks in that order because each can rule out a different assumption. If your model or firmware is not listed, the project has not reported testing that combination; do not infer compatibility from a nearby firmware number or a different console model. If the combination is listed but your game is absent from the game notes, the hardware entry does not tell you whether that game works. If a game is listed as having been started, that still does not prove it is fully playable from beginning to end or that another regional version behaves the same.

Can you use the PS2 disc directly?
Do not assume so. Sony’s normal PS5 software does not play PS2-format discs, and the available PS5SX2 project information does not establish that inserting a disc into a jailbroken PS5 will work. PCSX2’s FAQ answers that PC users can use PS2 discs directly, while warning that some games may run slowly from a PC disc drive and recommending an ISO dump instead. That is guidance for PCSX2 on a PC—not evidence of PS5SX2’s disc-drive behavior.
In practical terms, verify the PS5SX2 documentation for both the specific game-input method and any required files before relying on a physical disc. A PS2 disc by itself does not provide a jailbreak, emulator, or confirmed PS5SX2 setup.

It is particularly important not to transfer the PC answer word for word to a PS5. The PCSX2 FAQ’s direct-disc answer concerns PCSX2 running on a computer, and its warning about possible speed problems concerns a PC disc drive. It does not establish that a PS5 drive can read the same disc in the required way, that PS5SX2 accepts disc input, or that a particular game will work when started from a disc. The project’s current PS5-specific instructions are the appropriate place to confirm those details.
The available Sony guidance also needs to be read narrowly. Sony’s safety guide says PS2-format software cannot be played from disc through standard PS5 support. Its troubleshooting article says PS5 consoles cannot play audio CDs or burned discs. Those statements do not describe every possible homebrew disc-reading path, so they should not be used to claim that such a path is either possible or impossible. The accurate answer is that standard support is unavailable and PS5SX2’s disc behavior is not established by the documentation summarized here.
What the compatibility lists can—and cannot—tell you
- Firmware and model entries show which combinations the project says it tested. They do not certify every console on that firmware or establish that a jailbreak is currently available for it.
- Game entries record games that were started during tests. They are not a promise of full playability, stable performance, or compatibility with every regional release.
- Project changes matter. PS5SX2’s notes say compatibility can change as the software changes, so an old report may not describe the current build.
Read “tested” as a report about a test that was attempted, not as a universal status label. The PS5SX2 notes explicitly say their game list is not a compatibility guarantee. A title appearing in that list therefore does not settle every practical question a player may have: the note may only record that the game was started, and it does not promise that gameplay is complete or trouble-free. Conversely, a title missing from the list should not be described as confirmed incompatible; the project’s notes indicate what was tested, not the outcome of every untested possibility.
The same caution applies to firmware. An unlisted firmware has not been tried according to the project’s table. That is not the same as a finding that it can never work, but it is also not a reason to assume that it will. If your priority is a straightforward, Sony-supported experience, the answer is that a PS2 disc will not play through standard PS5 system software. The PS5’s documented PS4 compatibility is a separate feature and does not extend to PS2 discs.
If you are willing to investigate community software, first check whether PS5SX2’s current documentation covers your precise console model and firmware, then check the exact PS2 title and version in its test notes. Read the getting-started guide and confirm its stated file and input requirements. If any of those details are unclear or absent, do not fill the gap with a PC guide or assume that the physical disc will work. The project documents a potential route, not a guaranteed result or a Sony-supported feature.
