How to Play PlayStation Games on a Nintendo Switch 2

You cannot officially run PlayStation games on Nintendo Switch 2. Here is how Nintendo compatibility works and when PlayStation Portal Remote Play or cloud streaming is the appropriate alternative.

You cannot officially install or run PlayStation games natively on a Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo documents Switch 2 compatibility for Switch 2 software and compatible physical or digital Nintendo Switch games—not PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 software. If your goal is portable access to games from a PS5, Sony’s documented solution is the separate PlayStation Portal Remote Player. Portal streams from a paired PS5 or, where available, from Sony’s cloud service; it is not a Switch 2 accessory and does not make PlayStation games run on Nintendo’s console.

What Switch 2 compatibility actually covers

Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says: “In addition to Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 consoles can be used to play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch console.” Nintendo UK Support gives this wording in “Compatibility of Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2,” accessed October 13, 2026. That is the scope to use when deciding whether a game will run. A Switch 2 can read eligible Switch game cards, download eligible Switch purchases, and run Switch 2 titles. Some Switch games receive a free update or a paid upgrade for Switch 2, but those updates remain Nintendo-platform software.

A PlayStation game is licensed and distributed for Sony hardware or a Sony-supported service. Buying the same title on PlayStation does not create a Switch 2 version, and inserting a PlayStation disc or downloading a PlayStation digital purchase cannot install it on Nintendo’s system. Nintendo’s compatibility information does not list PS4 or PS5 games as supported software.

Think of compatibility as tied to the platform edition, not merely the game’s name. A title may be sold for both PlayStation and Nintendo systems, but those are separate releases. The PlayStation edition is not a substitute for a Nintendo edition, even if the box art, story, and levels look the same. To play locally on Switch 2, you need a Nintendo release that is compatible with the console.

Compatibility is decided title by title

“Switch game” does not automatically mean “perfect on Switch 2.” Nintendo maintains a compatibility list for Switch games that start on Switch 2 but can have in-game issues. Before buying a Switch version or moving an existing library, check Nintendo’s current compatibility material for the exact title. This is a separate question from PlayStation compatibility: a game may work on Switch 2 as a Nintendo release while its PlayStation edition remains unavailable.

Checking the exact title matters even if you already own the Switch version. The question is not only whether Switch 2 recognizes the game, but also whether Nintendo has identified a compatibility issue after it starts. Use Nintendo’s current listing rather than assuming that an older purchase, a physical card, or a digital download will behave exactly as it did on the original Switch. If a game has a Switch 2 update or paid upgrade, check what that specific upgrade provides and whether it applies to your edition; an upgrade does not turn a PlayStation purchase into a Nintendo one.

Three different meanings of “playing PlayStation games”

Portable PlayStation play can mean local execution, Remote Play from your own console, or cloud streaming. These are different technical paths, with different hardware and subscription requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method Where the game runs PS5 required? Subscription Internet and eligibility Works on Switch 2?
Native Switch 2 play On the Switch 2 itself No No PlayStation subscription Requires a Nintendo release that is compatible with Switch 2 No documented PlayStation support
PlayStation Portal Remote Play On a paired PS5; video and controls are sent to Portal Yes Not required solely for Remote Play, but the game must be available on the PS5 account Wi-Fi or broadband connection; compatible PS5 and PS4 games installed on the PS5 No; Portal is separate hardware
PlayStation Portal cloud streaming On Sony’s cloud service and displayed on Portal No for eligible cloud sessions Active PlayStation Plus Premium required Portal, PlayStation account, supported country, eligible game and broadband; Sony lists 5 Mbps to start, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p No documented Switch 2 support

The last two options send a stream to a dedicated Sony device. Neither installs a PlayStation game on a Nintendo console. If you are comparing options, start with the location of the game: Remote Play depends on your paired PS5 and the games installed on it, while eligible cloud games run on Sony’s service. That difference determines whether you need a PS5 and which catalog and subscription rules apply.

Neither streaming route is local play. A stream carries the game image to the handheld and sends your inputs back over a network connection. That makes the supported device, connection quality, account access, and game eligibility part of the setup—not just the title itself. The published specifications explain minimum connection thresholds for cloud streaming; they do not promise that every home network will provide a responsive session.

PlayStation Portal: the official portable alternative

PlayStation Portal Remote Player is a separate handheld made to connect to a PS5. Sony describes it as accessing compatible games installed on the PS5 over Wi-Fi. The PS5 performs the game processing; Portal receives the picture and sends your controller input back to the console.

That distinction answers the practical question “Can I use Portal with my Switch 2?” No: Portal is the handheld display and controller for Sony’s documented PlayStation paths, not a bridge that attaches to a Nintendo console. You use Portal as its own device. If you already own a Switch 2, that does not supply the PS5, PlayStation account, or Portal hardware needed for Sony’s setup.

What Remote Play requires

  • A PlayStation Portal Remote Player.
  • A PlayStation account signed in to the relevant system.
  • A PS5 console paired for Remote Play.
  • A compatible PS5 or PS4 game installed on that PS5.
  • A sufficiently stable network connection between the console, Portal and network equipment.

Sony’s compatibility documentation describes Portal’s Remote Play connection as a PS5 function. It does not make Portal compatible with a PS4 console for that function. Remote Play therefore differs from buying a PlayStation game for local handheld use: your PS5 must be available, powered appropriately and connected to the network.

A useful setup check is to confirm the console and game before reaching for Portal. First, make sure the game is installed on the PS5 and is one of the compatible PS5 or PS4 titles. Then use the PlayStation account associated with that console and connect Portal over Wi-Fi. The game is still being played by the PS5; Portal is receiving and returning the stream. If the PS5 is not available, this Remote Play route does not replace it with a Switch 2.

Remote Play does not, by itself, mean that a PlayStation Plus Premium membership is required. Do not confuse that with Portal cloud streaming, which Sony says requires an active Premium membership. The two paths differ in their source of the game: your installed PS5 library for Remote Play versus Sony’s eligible cloud catalog for streaming.

What Portal does not do

  • It does not run PlayStation software on a Switch 2.
  • It does not convert a Switch 2 into a PlayStation device.
  • It does not make a PS5 game playable without the network path used by Remote Play.
  • It does not guarantee that every game, add-on or account feature behaves identically to playing directly on the television.

If you want to hold a device while your PS5 remains elsewhere in the home, Portal addresses that use case. If you specifically want to use the Switch 2 screen and controls, Sony’s documented Portal path does not provide that.

Portal also should not be mistaken for a way to buy a game once and access it on any screen. Remote Play depends on a compatible game being installed on the paired PS5 and available through the account you use. Cloud streaming has its own supported-game and regional limits. Before paying for hardware or a membership because of one particular title, confirm that the title is available through the route you intend to use.

Portal cloud streaming: portable play without your own PS5

Sony also documents cloud streaming on Portal in supported markets. In this mode, the game is run by Sony’s service rather than by a PS5 in your home. Sony requires all of the following:

  • PlayStation Portal Remote Player.
  • A PlayStation account.
  • An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership.
  • Broadband internet meeting the service’s requirements.
  • A country or region where the feature is offered.
  • A game that Sony makes eligible for Portal cloud streaming.

Sony lists these minimum connection figures: 5 Mbps upload and download to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p streaming, and 13 Mbps for 1080p streaming. They are service requirements, not a guarantee of image quality or uninterrupted play. Wireless congestion, latency, household traffic and the route to Sony’s servers can still affect responsiveness.

Read the thresholds as minimums for different stages, not as a promise that a connection just above the number will always feel good. Sony specifies upload and download of at least 5 Mbps to establish the session; the 7 Mbps and 13 Mbps figures are minimums for 720p and 1080p, respectively. If your connection fluctuates or is shared with other activity, real performance may be less reliable than a single speed reading suggests.

Game and region limits

Cloud catalog availability varies by country and by game. Sony’s support information states that PS3 and PS4 games are unavailable through this Portal cloud-streaming feature. Do not assume that a game included with PlayStation Plus, owned digitally, or playable through another PlayStation streaming route is automatically eligible on Portal. Check the current title and regional eligibility shown by Sony before subscribing for this purpose.

Cloud streaming and Remote Play are not interchangeable. Remote Play uses your paired PS5 and its installed games; cloud streaming uses Sony’s service and requires Premium. The first route depends on access to your console; the second can work without your own PS5 only for eligible cloud sessions. Both still require Portal hardware. Neither is documented as a Nintendo Switch 2 feature.

If you do not own a PS5, cloud streaming may sound like a way to avoid buying one, but it is not a general-purpose PlayStation library on any device. It still calls for Portal, Premium, a supported location, suitable broadband, and a title Sony has made eligible. And because Sony lists PS3 and PS4 games as unavailable through this Portal cloud-streaming feature, a game’s generation and route of access matter. Verify the particular game before making a purchase decision.

Can you play PS5 games on Switch 2?

Not as native Switch 2 software. Nintendo’s documented compatibility scope covers Nintendo Switch 2 games and compatible Nintendo Switch releases. Sony’s documented portable paths use PlayStation Portal, with Remote Play from a PS5 or cloud streaming under the requirements above. There is no official Switch 2 installation, store, cartridge or system-compatibility path for PS5 games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A PlayStation and Switch version of the same game are separate platform releases. Cross-save, cross-buy or cross-play features—when a publisher offers them—do not turn one platform’s executable into another platform’s version. You would need an actual Nintendo release to play locally on Switch 2.

This is also why a PlayStation account or digital library does not change the answer. A PS5 game can be streamed to Portal by one of Sony’s documented methods, but that is still PlayStation play on Portal. For Switch 2, search for a Nintendo edition and check its compatibility status; if there is no compatible Nintendo release, neither a disc nor a PlayStation Store download supplies one.

Can you use PlayStation Remote Play on Switch 2?

Sony’s documented Remote Play route for portable play is Portal connected to a PS5. The support material does not document a Switch 2 application, accessory mode or compatibility feature that receives PS5 Remote Play. Consequently, you should not plan a setup around connecting a Switch 2 to Portal or installing PlayStation Remote Play on Nintendo’s operating system.

This conclusion is deliberately narrower than a claim that every conceivable unofficial workaround can never exist. Third-party experiments were not established by the official documentation, and they may involve unsupported software, additional hardware, account risks or unstable performance. They are not a reliable, documented answer to how to play PlayStation games on Switch 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you encounter a video or post promising a workaround, separate a demonstration from a supported feature. The official material establishes Nintendo’s game compatibility scope and Sony’s Portal routes; it does not establish that an unofficial method is safe, reliable, or suitable for your account and console. Treat claims that promise a simple Switch 2 app, a disc-reading trick, or access to every PlayStation game with caution, and do not spend money on an unverified accessory on the assumption that it will create official compatibility.

Choose the right option for your situation

If you own only a Switch 2

  1. Look for a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 edition of the game.
  2. Check Nintendo’s current Switch 2 compatibility information for that exact edition.
  3. Buy or download the Nintendo release if it is listed as compatible.

If no Nintendo edition exists, Switch 2 has no documented native route for that PlayStation game. If there is a Nintendo edition but it appears on Nintendo’s list of games with in-game compatibility issues, account for that before buying or expecting a seamless move from an original Switch.

If you own a PS5 and want to play away from the television

  1. Confirm that the game is installed on the PS5 and is a compatible PS5 or PS4 title.
  2. Set up PlayStation Portal with the PlayStation account associated with the PS5.
  3. Use a stable network connection for both the console and Portal.
  4. Start Remote Play on Portal and select the installed game.

This gives you handheld PlayStation access, but the handheld is Portal, not Switch 2. It also means your console remains part of the setup: Remote Play streams the installed game from the paired PS5 rather than moving the game to the handheld.

If you do not own a PS5

  1. Confirm that your country supports Portal cloud streaming.
  2. Confirm that you have PlayStation Plus Premium and a PlayStation account.
  3. Check whether the specific game is eligible; Sony excludes PS3 and PS4 games from this Portal cloud-streaming feature.
  4. Measure the connection against Sony’s 5 Mbps session, 7 Mbps 720p and 13 Mbps 1080p minimums.
  5. Use Portal for the cloud session.

A Switch 2 cannot substitute for the required Portal hardware in this documented setup. Before subscribing, check both the catalog and country availability; a Premium membership alone does not establish that every title can be streamed on Portal.

Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them

“The Switch 2 plays physical games, so it should read a PlayStation disc.”

Physical compatibility is not a universal disc-reading capability. Nintendo’s statement refers to compatible physical Nintendo Switch games. A PlayStation disc is not a Nintendo Switch game card and is outside that compatibility list.

“I bought the game digitally, so I can download it anywhere.”

Digital purchases remain tied to the platform store and license for which they were sold. A PlayStation Store purchase does not become a Nintendo eShop entitlement.

“Cloud gaming means any screen can use PlayStation’s service.”

Cloud access depends on the supported device, account, subscription, region, network and game catalog. Sony’s documented Portal cloud feature requires Portal and Premium; it does not document Switch 2 as a client.

“Every Switch game works perfectly on Switch 2.”

Nintendo identifies Switch titles that can start but have in-game compatibility issues. Check the current list before assuming that a particular Nintendo edition is problem-free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Remote Play and cloud streaming are the same.”

Remote Play streams from your paired PS5 and uses games installed there. Cloud streaming runs selected games on Sony’s service and requires Premium. The distinction affects whether you need a PS5, which games are eligible and how availability is determined.

“I can use Portal to make the Switch 2 screen work as a PlayStation display.”

Portal is itself the separate Sony handheld display and control device in Sony’s documented setup. It does not attach to or add PlayStation support to Switch 2. If your aim is portable PlayStation play, use the Portal route directly; if your aim is to play on Switch 2, look for a compatible Nintendo edition.

A practical checklist before spending money

  • Identify the edition: Is the game available as a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 release, or only for PlayStation?
  • Check Nintendo compatibility: For a Switch release, review Nintendo’s title-specific compatibility information.
  • Choose the streaming route: PS5 ownership points to Remote Play; no PS5 means checking Portal cloud eligibility.
  • Budget for the correct hardware: Portal is separate from Switch 2 and is required for the documented Sony handheld routes.
  • Check the subscription: Remote Play and cloud streaming have different requirements; Premium is required for Portal cloud streaming.
  • Verify the region: Sony says cloud availability and supported games vary by country.
  • Test the network: For cloud streaming, compare the connection with Sony’s 5 Mbps, 7 Mbps and 13 Mbps thresholds and allow for real-world latency.
  • Confirm the game’s route: For Remote Play, check that it is installed on the paired PS5; for cloud play, check Portal cloud eligibility rather than assuming ownership or a catalog listing is enough.
  • Do not assume unofficial compatibility: An experiment described online is not the same as a supported, documented Switch 2 feature.

The fastest decision path is straightforward: first ask whether a Nintendo edition exists. If it does, check Nintendo’s title-specific compatibility information. If it does not, ask whether your goal is to stream from a PS5 or to use Sony cloud streaming without a PS5. The first requires the paired console and an installed compatible game; the second requires Portal, Premium, regional support, eligible game selection, and the stated broadband minimums. Neither path uses the Switch 2.

The bottom line on Switch 2 and PlayStation

Switch 2 is a Nintendo platform, and its documented backward-compatibility promise concerns compatible Nintendo Switch games. It does not natively run PlayStation games, PS4 discs or PS5 downloads. For portable PlayStation play, use the platform Sony documents: Portal Remote Play with a PS5, or Portal cloud streaming with PlayStation Plus Premium where the service, game and region qualify. Those choices solve the portable-play problem with separate Sony hardware; they do not put PlayStation games on a Switch 2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you play PS5 games on Nintendo Switch 2?

Not natively. Nintendo documents Switch 2 support for Switch 2 software and compatible Nintendo Switch games, not PS5 software. A PlayStation version and a Nintendo version are separate releases; you need a compatible Nintendo edition to play locally on Switch 2.

Can you use PlayStation Remote Play on Switch 2?

Sony documents Portal Remote Play as a way to stream compatible games installed on a paired PS5 to PlayStation Portal. Sony does not document Switch 2 as a Remote Play client, and Portal is separate hardware.

Do you need a PS5 to use PlayStation Portal?

A PS5 is required for Portal Remote Play, which streams compatible games installed on the paired console. Sony also offers Portal cloud streaming in supported regions for eligible games; that route does not require your own PS5, but does require Portal, a PlayStation account, broadband, and active PlayStation Plus Premium.

Does PlayStation Portal cloud streaming work with PS4 games?

Sony’s Portal cloud-streaming support information says PS3 and PS4 games are unavailable through this feature. Check Sony’s current eligibility information for a specific game, country, and service before subscribing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What internet speed does Portal cloud streaming require?

Sony lists minimum upload and download speeds of 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p. These are minimum requirements, not a guarantee of stable or responsive play.

Can a PlayStation digital purchase be downloaded onto Switch 2?

No. A PlayStation Store purchase does not become a Nintendo eShop entitlement. To play on Switch 2, you need a Nintendo release that is compatible with the console.

Does every Nintendo Switch game work perfectly on Switch 2?

No. Nintendo lists Switch games that can start on Switch 2 but have in-game compatibility issues. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility information for the exact title.

The Bottom Line

You cannot natively play PlayStation games on Nintendo Switch 2. For portable PlayStation play, use a separate PlayStation Portal: Remote Play requires a paired PS5, while cloud streaming requires Premium, a supported region, an eligible game, and suitable broadband. Neither option makes PlayStation software run on Switch 2.
