Install and launch on Windows 10 or 11

After verification, launch again from the Library. If the problem remains, record the exact symptom—no window, an immediate exit, a blank screen, or a later crash—and check Windows and graphics-driver updates. The available title-specific information does not establish a particular crash fix, launch option, DLL replacement, or compatibility setting, so do not treat an internet workaround for another game as a Provincial Player solution.
Steam Deck compatibility: what is known and what is not
SteamDB lists the supported system as Windows and does not provide a confirmed Steam Deck rating for Provincial Player. Searches also found no title-specific ProtonDB report. A cautious Proton test procedure
- Install the Steam version on the Deck in the normal way. Begin in Gaming Mode if you want to confirm the default behavior, but do not interpret a failed default launch as proof that every Proton option fails.
- Switch to Desktop Mode, locate Provincial Player in Steam, and open Properties.
- Open the Compatibility section and enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose a current Proton release shown by your client. If the first choice fails, Proton Experimental is a reasonable troubleshooting option because it receives newer compatibility changes; it is not a game-specific recommendation or a guarantee.
- Close Properties, return to Gaming Mode, and start the game. Test a new game, menus, transitions, mini-games, audio, and quitting to the Steam overlay rather than checking only whether an opening window appears.
- If the built-in controls do not map correctly, open the controller layout and use Steam Input to create a keyboard-and-mouse-style layout. Map pointer movement and clicking to the Deck controls, then add any keyboard keys the game requests. This is an input workaround, not evidence of native controller support.
- Keep notes on the Proton tool and layout that you tried. If an update changes behavior, you can return to the same Compatibility page and switch tools without modifying the installed game files.
This procedure is a generic Proton workflow. It has not been validated as a Provincial Player result, so avoid promising that the game works on every Deck or that one Proton release is the correct permanent choice.
When a Deck attempt is the wrong choice
- Choose Windows if you need the platform explicitly documented by the listing.
- Choose Windows if you depend on a conventional mouse and keyboard and do not want to design a Steam Input layout.
- Choose Windows if small point-and-click text must be readable without experimenting with scaling or display settings.
- Choose a Deck experiment only if you accept possible launch, input, video, or readability problems and are willing to switch Proton tools.

Saves, Steam Cloud, and backups
Steam advertises Steam Cloud support for Provincial Player. Cloud synchronization is useful when moving between a Windows installation and another Steam installation, but it is not a substitute for a manual backup: synchronization can propagate an unwanted state if a save is damaged or if a newer empty profile overwrites an older one.
SteamDB records local saves in the game’s installation tree at steamapps/common/provincial-player/Save. The save files use the .dat extension. On Windows, close the game and Steam before copying that Save folder to another location. Keep the original folder unchanged until you have confirmed that the backup opens correctly.

- Exit Provincial Player normally and wait for Steam to finish any Cloud status update.
- Make a dated copy of
steamapps/common/provincial-player/Save, including every.datfile. - On the destination installation, launch once and exit so Steam creates its local directory.
- Close the game, compare the destination folder with your backup, and copy the backed-up files into the destination
Savefolder only if you intend to replace its contents. - Start the game and verify the expected save slots before deleting either copy.
Folder names can differ if you installed Steam to a custom library. Use the Provincial Player library location shown under the game’s Steam properties rather than assuming the default drive.
