PS5SX2 is a native PS5 port of PCSX2 for PS2 games; XPSemu is a native port of xemu for first-generation Xbox games. Both require a jailbroken console and files supplied by the user, and neither offers guaranteed compatibility across its console’s library.
Which emulator handles each console?

“Xbox 1” here means the original Xbox, not Xbox One. XPSemu is the PS5 port; upstream xemu describes its supported desktop platforms as Windows, macOS and Linux, not PS5. See the upstream xemu site for its desktop scope.
What you need before setting up either emulator
These are homebrew applications, not official PS5 features. Both routes require a jailbroken PS5, a way to mount and run the app, and the relevant system and game files supplied by you. Neither project bundles BIOS files or games.
- For PS5SX2: the project documents a jailbroken PS5, its Helper payload loaded with kstuff, ShadowMountPlus or an equivalent app-mounting setup, your own PS2 BIOS dumped from your console, and your own game files. Supported game formats listed in the README are
.iso,.chd,.csoand.zso. - For XPSemu: the project documents a jailbroken PS5 able to run homebrew, XPSemu Tools alongside kstuff, a way to mount the app, your own Xbox MCPX boot ROM, Xbox BIOS/flash ROM, hard-disk image and game files. XPSemu reads XISO images; the README says full redump images need conversion.
Use files you are entitled to use and follow the emulator projects’ instructions for creating or preparing them. The project documentation says these system files and games are not included.

PS2 games on PS5: what PS5SX2 supports
PS5SX2 is a native PS5 port of PCSX2. Its documentation says PCSX2 recompilers run on the PS5 CPU and a Vulkan renderer draws through a modified PS5 Vulkan driver. The project advertises upscaling, patches, save states and per-game configuration; those features do not establish that any particular game works well, so check the project’s per-game notes.
Compatibility and firmware evidence
The project’s tested-console section lists PS5 Pro firmware 10.01 and 11.40, plus other PS5 models, including a Slim, on firmware 6.02, 8.40, 10.01, 10.60, 11.40, 11.60, 12.00 and 12.70. According to the project, unlisted firmware has not been tried. Firmware coverage is project-tested information, not a guarantee that an emulator will work on every console or setup using that firmware.

PS5SX2 says 108 games were started during development or initial testing in September 2026, and warns that this is not a compatibility guarantee and results can change between builds. A game starting is not the same as sustained full-speed play; use the title-specific notes to judge a game rather than treating the count as a success rate.
Optional USB storage
PS5SX2 documents USB locations for game and BIOS files, so an external USB drive can be used to manage those files instead of keeping them all on the console. The documentation does not establish that a particular drive model has been tested or that external storage improves emulation performance.

A separate RetroArch option
A separate native PS5 RetroArch project also documents a PS2-core path. Its current README reports tests of the God of War II and Final Fantasy X demos and GTA San Andreas at 6× internal resolution and full speed, with multi-threaded VU1 and save states. Those are that project’s reported tests, not evidence about PS5SX2 or a general claim for PS2 games.
Original Xbox games on PS5: what XPSemu Alpha 1 can do
XPSemu is a native PS5 port of xemu. Its README calls Alpha 1 the first public build and says it boots and plays real games, while warning users to expect bugs, missing features and slow scenes in CPU-heavy games.

The project explains that the emulated Xbox CPU is the bottleneck: performance can fall below a game’s frame-rate cap in demanding scenes. The following examples are XPSemu developer-reported results for Alpha 1, accessed in October 2026—not independent benchmark measurements or promises about other games.

Alpha 1 limitations
- The documented emulated Xbox memory limit is 64 MB.
- Save states are not available.
- The README says DSP needs to be kept off for most games.
- CPU-heavy areas may slow below a game’s frame-rate cap, and bugs or missing features are expected in this first public build.
Is this Sony-supported backward compatibility?
No. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance addresses PS4 games: it says the overwhelming majority of 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 and describes caveats for PS4 titles. It does not document native PS2 or original Xbox playback. PS5SX2 and XPSemu are community homebrew projects that run on a jailbroken console, not Sony-supported backward-compatibility features.

How to choose a route
Choose based on the console whose games you want to try, then check that project’s current instructions and title-specific compatibility notes. The projects are separate and their evidence is at different maturity levels: PS5SX2 lists early game and firmware testing, while XPSemu is at its first public Alpha 1 with a small set of developer-tested examples. For either, confirm your firmware and setup requirements and prepare the required files yourself before attempting to run a game.
