Original PS2 and PS3 discs do not work in a PS5. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide says PlayStation, PS2-format and PS3-format software cannot be played from a disc, and Sony’s support documentation specifically excludes PS3 discs. Use a PS2 for an original PS2 disc and a PS3 for an original PS3 disc. A PS3 can play some PS2 discs, but compatibility is limited to particular hardware revisions and games.
On a PS4 or PS5, your alternative is the current PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. Only listed titles are available, availability depends on country, plan and time, and classic PS3 catalog games are streaming-only. The catalog guide specifies a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps for streaming.

Choose the route that matches your game
Start with two facts: the exact game and the format you own. A disc, a digital license, a remaster and a subscription catalog entry are different releases. The table below gives the practical route before you spend time checking settings or buying hardware.

If your goal is to preserve an original disc collection, original hardware is the straightforward answer. If convenience matters more than using the disc, check the current catalog listing for each game individually.

Why a PS5 cannot play PS2 or PS3 discs
The PS5’s disc drive is not a general reader for every earlier PlayStation format. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide for model group CFI-2015 states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” Sony’s Games Support information also states that PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs.
This is a format and software-compatibility limitation, not a problem that an update, a different HDMI cable or an external USB disc drive can solve. A PS5 can play PS5 software and a broad selection of PS4 software, but that does not create backward compatibility for an original PS2 or PS3 game disc. The disc’s age, region marking or condition may affect whether an older console reads it, yet a perfectly clean PS2 or PS3 disc still remains unsupported on PS5.
Do not confuse an original disc with a modern re-release. A publisher may sell a remaster, remake or emulated classic as a PS4/PS5 product. That release can run on a newer console because it was built and sold for that platform; it does not mean the original PS2 or PS3 disc is compatible.
Playing an original PS2 disc
Use a PlayStation 2 for the dependable disc route
Insert the PS2 disc into a functioning PS2, connect the console to a compatible display, select the correct input and start the game from the system menu. This is the direct original-hardware path and does not depend on a subscription catalog or an internet connection. Because the evidence does not establish current new-console inventory, expect to evaluate a used console’s condition, accessories and disc-reading ability when obtaining one.
Before buying, confirm that the console includes the essentials you need: a power cable, a controller, a memory card if the game requires local saves, and the correct video connection for your television. These are practical setup checks rather than guarantees about any particular seller or model. Test the disc drive with a known-good game when possible, and inspect for a damaged tray, excessive fan noise, missing controller ports or a system that resets under load.

Can a PS3 play your PS2 disc?
Sometimes, but never assume it. Sony’s instruction manual for the CECH-2101A and CECH-2101B PS3 models says: “This model of the PlayStation®3 system is designed to play PlayStation®3 format software and has limited backward compatibility.” That wording is a warning that compatibility depends on the exact PS3 hardware and software title.
To check a proposed PS3 purchase, record the complete model number from the console label or system information screen, then verify that model against a reliable compatibility list for the specific PS2 game. A statement that a console is “a PS3” is not enough: different revisions have different capabilities, and the manual cited above is evidence of limited compatibility, not a universal matrix.
- Find the PS3’s exact model identifier, including the CECH prefix and suffix.
- Search for the exact PS2 game, including its region or edition if more than one release exists.
- Confirm that the compatibility information refers to that model, not merely to another PS3 generation.
- If the title is absent, marked with caveats or supported only with known issues, use a PS2 instead.
- Test the disc and save behavior before relying on the PS3 as your only way to play.
This model check matters most when buying used hardware. A low price does not compensate for a console that cannot run the particular PS2 disc you own.
Playing an original PS3 disc
Use a PlayStation 3
A PS3 is the direct route for an original PS3 disc. Connect the console, insert the disc and launch it from the game column. No PS Plus catalog entitlement is needed merely to start a disc-based game, although an individual title may have its own online-service requirements that are separate from disc compatibility.
As with any older used console, inspect the optical drive, controller, power lead and storage condition. The available evidence establishes the PS3’s role as the original-hardware route; it does not establish current inventory, seller quality or a specific used-console price. Treat those as purchase checks rather than assumptions.

What a PS3 disc cannot do on PS5
Putting a PS3 disc into a PS5 will not install a PS5 version, unlock a catalog stream or convert the disc into a digital license. Sony’s support documentation excludes PS3 discs, so the practical choices are a working PS3, a separately sold remaster or remake, or a current catalog entry if the title is offered there.

Using PlayStation Plus on PS4 or PS5
PlayStation Plus can provide access to selected older games without the original disc, but it is not a complete library of every PS2 and PS3 release. Catalog selection and availability vary by market, plan, title and time. A game that appears in one country or plan may be absent in another, and a listing can be removed later.
Check the exact title in your region
- On a PS4 or PS5, open the PlayStation Plus area from the console’s home screen.
- Open the Classics Catalog or use the catalog search field.
- Enter the exact game title and inspect the result for your country or account region.
- Read the product page to see whether the option is download, stream or unavailable on your plan.
- Confirm the membership level required by the listing before subscribing or renewing.
Sony’s catalog guidance is the authoritative check for current access. US and UK support pages describe the feature, but their catalogs are not promises about every other country. If the title does not appear in your own catalog, do not infer availability from a screenshot, an old list or a listing from another region.
How PS3 classics work in the catalog
Sony says classic PS3 titles in the Classics Catalog are streaming-only. The game runs on Sony’s service rather than downloading a PS3 game package to the PS4 or PS5. The product page should therefore show a stream option; a download option for a different edition does not change the status of the classic PS3 entry.
PS2 and other classic entries may show a download or stream option, depending on the individual title and service listing. Check the game page instead of assuming that every classic uses the same delivery method.

Do you need the highest PlayStation Plus plan?
Access is tied to an eligible PlayStation Plus plan and the title’s current catalog listing. The exact plan name and benefits can differ by market, so use the membership information displayed in your account’s regional PlayStation Plus page. Do not subscribe solely because a game appears on an old list; confirm that the listing is present now and that your selected plan includes it.
Streaming requirements and what 5 Mbps means
Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide specifies 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for streaming. That is a service requirement, not a guarantee of perfect picture quality or input response. Your connection must also remain stable while the session is active.
- Use the same network location in which you intend to play when checking the catalog and launching the stream.
- If the console reports a connection below the stated minimum, stop other heavy downloads and retest before blaming the game.
- A wired connection can reduce local wireless interference, although the official minimum remains the 5 Mbps figure.
- Expect streaming behavior to vary with household traffic, network congestion and distance to the service; the catalog page is the place to verify current service support.
If your connection cannot sustain the requirement, original hardware or a separately sold local release avoids the catalog stream. A faster connection also cannot make an unlisted game appear or turn a streaming-only PS3 classic into a downloadable file.

A remaster or remake is a new platform release. It may contain upgraded graphics, altered controls, additional content or a different technical implementation, but it is not the same entitlement as the PS2 or PS3 disc. Search the PlayStation Store for the exact game and read the platform, edition and purchase terms.

- Platform: confirm that the listing supports your PS4 or PS5 model.
- Edition: distinguish a remaster, remake, bundle and original classic listing.
- Ownership: verify whether your existing digital license is recognized or whether the release is a separate purchase.
- Delivery: identify whether the product is a download or a stream.
- Region: make sure the store page belongs to the account region where you will play.
The search evidence does not establish a complete title-by-title list of remasters or remakes, so the individual store page is the only dependable check for a particular game.

A decision process for your exact situation
If you own a disc
- Read the label: PS2 or PS3 format.
- For a PS2 disc, choose a PS2 first. Consider a PS3 only after confirming its exact model and the game’s compatibility.
- For a PS3 disc, choose a PS3. Do not plan around PS5 support.
- Inspect the used console, controller, cables and optical drive before purchase.
If you do not own a disc
- Search the exact title in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog on your PS4 or PS5.
- Check your country, plan and the listing’s delivery method.
- For a classic PS3 entry, plan on streaming only.
- Confirm the 5 Mbps minimum and your network stability if streaming is offered.
- If the title is absent, look for a separately sold remaster or remake rather than assuming the original is included.
If you are buying a PS3 to cover both generations
Do not buy on the label “backward compatible” alone. Obtain the full CECH model number, match it to the PS2 title, and keep a PS2 as the fallback when compatibility is uncertain. Sony’s model-specific manual supports the conclusion that PS2 support is limited; it does not promise that every PS3 revision or every PS2 game will work.
Troubleshooting common dead ends
The PS5 rejects the disc
This is expected for original PS2 and PS3 software. Recheck the format and move to the appropriate original console, a verified catalog listing or a separately sold re-release. Repeated cleaning, changing regions or reinstalling system software cannot add unsupported format compatibility.
The PS3 does not start a PS2 game
Verify the PS3 model and exact title first. If either is unknown, treat compatibility as unconfirmed. A different PS3 revision may not behave the same way, and a game-specific caveat can override a general statement about the console family.

Check the account’s country, the current catalog and the plan shown on the title page. Catalog availability changes, so an old article or another region’s store is not proof of current access. If it remains absent, use original hardware or look for a separate re-release.
The catalog offers only streaming
That is normal for classic PS3 entries according to Sony’s guide. Confirm that your connection meets the stated 5 Mbps minimum and that your membership is eligible. If streaming is unsuitable, a PS3 disc or a local remaster is the alternative.
What to verify before you commit
- Exact game title, region and edition.
- Disc versus digital license versus catalog listing.
- Exact console model, especially for PS2 play on PS3.
- Current regional catalog entry and required plan.
- Download or stream delivery method.
- At least 5 Mbps broadband for catalog streaming.
- Used-console condition, accessories and optical-drive operation.
The reliable rule is simple: match the format to the hardware or service that explicitly supports it. A PS2 disc belongs in a PS2 unless a specific PS3 model-and-title check says otherwise; a PS3 disc belongs in a PS3; and PS4/PS5 access depends on a current, regional PlayStation Plus listing rather than on the disc you already own.
