On the PS5, open Games home > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog, choose an eligible title, then select Download or Stream. You need a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Original PS2 discs do not work in a PS5, so a game must appear as an official Classics Catalog release or be available as a separate official remaster.
What “playing PS2 games on PS5” actually means
A PS5 does not read PS2 game discs. Sony’s PS5 FAQ says: “No, PS5 will play PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games, only.” That means inserting an original PS2 disc into a PS5 is not a supported way to play it.

Instead, Sony distributes selected PS2-era games as modern PlayStation releases in the Classics Catalog. These releases are supplied through PlayStation Plus Premium and are presented in the PS5 interface like other digital games. Depending on the title and your region, you can either install it on the console or play it through cloud streaming.
A different legal route is an official remaster. A remaster is a separate PS4 or PS5 release rather than the original disc running through backward compatibility. It may have upgraded resolution, controls, performance or other changes, so check the product listing to see whether you are getting a Classics release or a remaster.

What you need before starting
| Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 connected to PlayStation Network | The Classics Catalog and PlayStation Plus benefits are accessed through the PS5’s online account services. |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | Sony lists Premium as the tier that includes the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming. |
| Internet connection | Required to browse the catalog and obtain a download; streaming also needs a sustained broadband connection. |
| Free console storage for downloads | A downloaded game occupies PS5 storage. The exact amount varies by title and is shown on its listing rather than as one fixed Classics requirement. |
| First-party PS5 controller for streaming | Sony says third-party controllers are not supported during PlayStation Plus streaming. |
Premium is the relevant tier for this method. Lower PlayStation Plus tiers do not provide the Premium Classics Catalog access described here, so upgrading is necessary if the Classics Catalog is absent from your benefits.
How to find and play a PS2 Classic on PS5
- Sign in to PlayStation Network. Confirm that the PS5 is online and using the account with the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
- Open Games home. From the PS5 home screen, go to the main Games area.
- Open PlayStation Plus. Select the PlayStation Plus tile or hub.
- Choose the Benefits tab. The tab contains the benefits associated with your current subscription.
- Select Classics Catalog. Browse or search the catalog for the title you want. The visible lineup is tied to your country or region.
- Open the game’s page. Check that the listing is the official Classics release you intend to play, rather than a similarly named remaster or another edition.
- Choose Download or Stream. Download installs the game on the PS5. Stream starts cloud play without installing the game locally.
- Start the game. If you selected streaming, use a first-party PS5 controller and keep the console connected to the required broadband service for the session.
If a title page offers only one of those choices, use the option shown for that title. Download and streaming availability can differ by game, market and current catalog status.
Download versus stream: which option is better?
| Consideration | Download | Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Uses PS5 storage. You need enough free space for the game. | Does not require a local game installation. |
| Broadband dependence | Requires a connection to obtain the game, but play does not depend on continuous streaming bandwidth once installed. | Requires a sustained connection throughout play. Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps, and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. |
| Latency | Game input is processed locally, so it is not dependent on the quality of a live stream. | Input and video travel through the network, making the experience sensitive to connection quality and network delay. |
| Convenience | Best when you expect to replay the game and have available storage. | Useful when you want to start without waiting for a download or want to conserve storage. |
| Streaming restrictions | Not subject to the streaming-only restrictions listed by Sony. | No broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, keyboard, mouse, PSVR or third-party-controller support while streaming. |
Choose a download when consistency matters
Downloading is usually the safer choice for a long playthrough, a slow or variable connection, or a game where timing matters. The initial download uses storage and may take time, but the game is not being delivered as a live video stream while you play.

Streaming avoids the installation step and is practical for sampling a game, using a console with limited free space, or playing a title you do not expect to revisit often. It is only as stable as the connection available to the PS5, and the streaming feature restrictions apply for the entire session.
Streaming bandwidth and controller requirements
Sony’s guidance sets a minimum of 5 Mbps for PlayStation Plus streaming. Sony states that 15 Mbps is needed for 1080p streaming. These are connection-speed requirements, not guarantees of a particular level of responsiveness; congestion, Wi-Fi conditions and other network activity can still affect the session.
Use a first-party PS5 controller when streaming. Sony explicitly says third-party controllers are not supported during PlayStation Plus streaming. If the game does not respond to a controller that works elsewhere, switch to an official PS5 controller before troubleshooting the game itself.
Streaming also disables several PS5 features. While a PlayStation Plus game is being streamed, Sony lists no:
- Broadcasting
- Share Play
- Share Screen
- Remote Play
- Keyboard support
- Mouse support
- PSVR support
- Third-party-controller support
Those restrictions apply to the streaming session; they are not a statement that every downloaded Classics release has the same limitations.

Which PS2 games are in the Classics Catalog?
The catalog is not a complete PS2 library. Sony’s catalog pages and editorials identify examples such as the following:
| Title | How Sony identifies it | Availability qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy | PS2 Classic example | Check the live Classics Catalog for your country or region. |
| Dark Cloud | PS2 Classic example | Check the live Classics Catalog for your country or region. |
| Rogue Galaxy | PS2 Classic example | Check the live Classics Catalog for your country or region. |
| Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus | PS2 Classic example | Check the live Classics Catalog for your country or region. |
| Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings | Announced as a PS2 addition to Premium | Confirm the current listing and regional availability before trying to play. |
| Dropship: United Peace Force | Announced as a PS2 addition to Premium | Confirm the current listing and regional availability before trying to play. |
These examples do not establish worldwide availability. Sony tells users to check the catalog for their own country or region, and Sony’s editorial pages warn that lineups can differ between regions. New titles can also be added over time, so the live catalog is the authoritative place to verify a game immediately before subscribing, downloading or planning a playthrough.
Why a PS2 game may be missing from your Classics Catalog
Your subscription is not Premium
The Classics Catalog is associated with PlayStation Plus Premium. If the Benefits tab does not show Classics Catalog, verify the active tier on the account you are using. A subscription on another account does not automatically make the benefit available to every user.

The title is not licensed in your region
Catalog rights vary by country and region. A game shown in a Sony announcement or another market’s catalog may not appear in yours. Change your expectation rather than trying to force an import: the PS5 displays the catalog tied to the account’s market.
You are looking for a disc, not a digital listing
An original PS2 disc is not converted into a digital entitlement by inserting it into the PS5. Search the Classics Catalog for an official digital release. If none exists, look for a separate official PS4 or PS5 remaster instead.
The catalog lineup has changed
Sony adds titles over time, and its current catalog—not an old announcement or screenshot—determines what can be played today. Search again from the live Classics Catalog and open the title page to see whether Download or Stream is offered.
You found a different edition
A franchise may have a PS2 Classic, a remaster, a sequel or a collection with a similar name. Read the platform and edition information on the listing. A remaster may require its own purchase or entitlement and is not necessarily included because a related PS2 title is in Classics.
PS2 Classics releases versus official remasters
| Question | PS2 Classic in the catalog | Official remaster |
|---|---|---|
| Where it comes from | A Sony-supported Classics Catalog release based on a PS2-era game. | A separate PS4 or PS5 release produced as a remaster or updated edition. |
| How you access it | Through the PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog when the title is available in your region. | Through its own PlayStation Store listing or entitlement. |
| Original PS2 disc required? | No; the catalog release is digital. | No; the remaster is a separate digital or supported modern release. |
| Are features identical? | Not necessarily. Use the title page for the specific release. | Not necessarily. Remasters can change graphics, controls, performance or content. |
This distinction prevents a common mistake: seeing a game associated with PS2 and assuming that every modern version is included in Premium. Confirm the exact product name and entitlement before starting.

How to make the decision before you subscribe
- Check the live catalog in your region. Do not rely solely on a list from another country or an older announcement.
- Confirm the exact edition. Decide whether you want the Classics release or a separate remaster.
- Choose your play method. Select Download if you have storage and want less network dependence; select Stream if avoiding installation is more important.
- Check your controller. Have a first-party PS5 controller available if you plan to stream.
- Check your connection. For streaming, meet Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum; target 15 Mbps for 1080p.
- Review feature needs. If you need broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, keyboard, mouse or PSVR, streaming is not suitable for that session.
Common problems and practical fixes
The Stream button is unavailable
Verify that the title supports streaming in your region and that the account has Premium. Some catalog entries may offer Download without Stream. If streaming is not listed, use the available download option or choose another supported release.
The game will not start streaming
Confirm that the PS5 is online, the Premium subscription is active and the connection meets the stated minimum. Stop other heavy network activity, then retry. If the controller is third-party, replace it with a first-party PS5 controller.
The stream looks poor or does not reach 1080p
Sony states that 15 Mbps is needed for 1080p streaming. A connection below that figure should not be expected to deliver 1080p consistently. Other network traffic can also reduce the bandwidth available to the PS5.
The download option is missing
Open the specific game page rather than relying on a general search result, then check the available actions. Download availability is title-specific. If only Stream appears, that listing is currently offering cloud play rather than a local installation.
The PS2 disc is not recognized
This is expected behavior, not a disc-drive fault. PS5 does not directly support original PS2 discs. Use the official Classics Catalog release or locate an official remaster that supports PS5.
Legal and account boundaries
Using the Classics Catalog or an official remaster keeps the game within Sony’s supported distribution system. Copying a PS2 disc to the PS5, downloading an unlicensed image or using unofficial emulation is not the same as accessing an official Classics release and is outside this method.
Your access is tied to the title’s current catalog status, your PlayStation Network account, your Premium tier and your region. If any of those conditions changes, the game may no longer appear or may present different play options.
