PS5 cannot play PS3 discs. To play some PS3 games on PS5, you can stream titles currently offered in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog with PlayStation Plus Premium, where cloud streaming is supported. This is selective access—not general PS3 backward compatibility—and owning a disc does not grant access to its streaming version.
Can PS5 play PS3 discs?
No. PlayStation Support states, “PS5 consoles don’t support PlayStation®3 discs.” Putting a PS3 game disc into a PS5 will not install or launch the game. The PS5’s PS3 game streaming option is separate from disc ownership.
How to stream PS3 games on PS5
- Check the exact game in the live catalog. Search the PlayStation Plus game catalog for the title and confirm it is listed as streamable in your country. Catalog membership can change.
- Check regional support and membership. PlayStation Plus Premium is the US membership tier identified with Classics Catalog access and cloud streaming. Confirm that Premium cloud streaming is available for your account and region on PlayStation’s PS5 cloud streaming page.
- Open the PlayStation Plus area on your PS5. Go to the Game Catalog, choose an eligible title, then select Stream. PlayStation’s catalog streaming instructions require the correct membership plan and list 5 Mbps broadband as the minimum to establish a streaming session.
- Check the connection if streaming is poor. The 5 Mbps figure is a minimum to start a session, not a promise of stable play or high resolution. PlayStation says performance varies with the game and network environment.

Why a PS3 game may not appear
- The title is not in the current catalog. Premium does not include every PS3 game. Check the live listing for the exact title.
- Streaming is not available for your region or account. Service availability depends on supported countries; verify the current PlayStation cloud-streaming details for your location.
- Your membership does not include the required benefit. The streaming route requires the correct PlayStation Plus plan.
- Your network cannot establish or sustain a session. PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as a minimum to establish a stream; actual performance depends on network conditions and the game.
PlayStation’s streaming guidance also lists restrictions that can include Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, cameras, mouse and keyboard, PSVR, PS Move, and third-party controllers. These are general streaming limitations, not restrictions unique to PS3 games.
If you already own the PS3 disc
There is no PS5 setting, subscription, or accessory that makes the disc playable. Use a PS3 that supports the game, or check whether an official re-release exists for PS5 or another platform. A re-release is a separate version, so verify its platform and compatibility rather than assuming the PS3 disc carries over.
