Yes—you can play PS4 and PS5 games on a 4K Chromecast with Google TV using Sony’s PS Remote Play app. The Chromecast streams a game from your own PS4 or PS5; it does not run the game itself, and you still need the console, a compatible controller, and a suitable network connection. Sony verified the 4K Chromecast for Remote Play on Android TV 12 in a system update announced September 13, 2023.
What Sony added to Chromecast
Sony added the PS Remote Play app to compatible Android TV 12 devices in its September 13, 2023 system update. Its verified-device list included Chromecast with Google TV (4K model), alongside Sony’s BRAVIA XR A95L. Sony directs users to find and install PS Remote Play on the Android device. Sony’s announcement describes Remote Play as streaming games from a PS5 or PS4 to another device over the internet or a home network.

This is console-based streaming: the Chromecast receives the picture and sends controller input back to your console. Sony’s contemporaneous BRAVIA XR A95L announcement likewise says a PS4 or PS5 is required to stream games to other devices.

- Receiver: Chromecast with Google TV (4K model), with Android TV 12 compatibility as specified by Sony. The verified-device claim is for this model; it should not be generalized to every Chromecast or Google TV device.
- Console: A PS4 or PS5 with the game installed and Remote Play configured. The console remains the source of the game.
- App: PS Remote Play installed on the Chromecast. Sony’s announcement directs users to find and install it on the Android device.
- Controller: A compatible PlayStation controller. Sony identifies DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense, and DualSense Edge wireless controllers.
- Connection: Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps broadband and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. These are Sony’s 2023 Remote Play figures, not a guarantee of smooth play; network and device conditions still matter.
How to use PS Remote Play on a 4K Chromecast
- Prepare the console. Install the game on your PS4 or PS5 and configure the console for Remote Play. Keep in mind that the Chromecast connects to that console rather than launching a game independently.
- Install the app on the Chromecast. On the Chromecast with Google TV (4K model), find and install PS Remote Play. Sony lists Android TV 12 compatibility for the verified device.
- Connect a compatible controller. Pair a DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense, or DualSense Edge wireless controller with the setup.
- Start Remote Play and connect to your console. Follow the app’s prompts to link to the PS4 or PS5, then choose a game installed on that console.
- Reduce display delay if needed. Sony notes that input delay can vary with the TV or monitor and Chromecast signal conditions; use Game Mode or another low-latency display mode if available.
Remote Play is not PlayStation Plus cloud streaming
Remote Play streams from your own PS4 or PS5. It is different from PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming, which is a separate service for a selection of PS5 games on PS5 consoles and PlayStation Portal. Sony’s current cloud-streaming information says that PS4 and PS3 games cannot be streamed to PlayStation Portal and that Portal supports only a special selection of PS5 games.

So the Chromecast can display streamed PS4 and PS5 gameplay, but it cannot stream those games from Sony’s cloud in place of a console. The 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation above apply to Sony’s 2023 Remote Play guidance; Sony’s current cloud-streaming page separately lists a 5 Mbps minimum for a cloud-streaming session and 52 Mbps recommended for 2160p/4K. Those cloud figures describe a different service and should not be used as Chromecast Remote Play requirements.

Limits to know before you play
- Performance depends on the connection and devices. Sony warns that Remote Play performance varies with device and network conditions. A fast broadband plan alone does not rule out delay or interruptions on the connection between the console and Chromecast.
- Input delay can come from the display path. Sony specifically notes that the TV or monitor and Chromecast signal conditions may affect input delay. Game Mode or a low-latency display setting may help.
- Some games and equipment are incompatible. Titles that require PlayStation VR or PS VR2, or other additional peripherals, are not compatible with Remote Play.
- A controller is not optional. A compatible PlayStation controller is required; Sony’s BRAVIA announcement says the compatible controller is sold separately.
