Install PPSSPP, obtain a compatible PSP game file, and open it from the emulator’s Games tab. PPSSPP runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, does not require a separate PSP BIOS file, and can be played with a keyboard or a compatible controller.
1. Install PPSSPP on your PC
Download PPSSPP from its official download page and choose the current build for your operating system. The official introduction describes these options:
- Windows: use the installer for a standard installation, or the portable ZIP if you prefer to run PPSSPP without installing it.
- macOS: use the DMG package.
- Linux: use the Flatpak or AppImage option listed for your system.
Follow the download page’s platform-specific instructions; available packages and installation steps can change.
2. Get a compatible PSP game file
PPSSPP needs a game file to load. Its game instructions cover ISO disc images and compressed formats, as well as copying digital PSP games already on your own PSP. The game-dumping guide also specifies CSO and CHD support.

Use a digital game already on your PSP
For a PSP digital download, PPSSPP’s guide describes copying the game folder from the PSP to your computer and loading its EBOOT.PBP file. The copied file must be in a location you can find when browsing from PPSSPP.
Copy a UMD you own
The documented UMD-dumping method requires a PSP running custom firmware and a USB-Mini cable. In brief: insert the UMD, connect the PSP to the computer, select the UMD disc as the USB device in the custom-firmware menu, enable USB Connection, then copy the virtual ISO file exposed on the computer. See PPSSPP’s step-by-step dumping instructions for the procedure.

These are technical instructions, not a determination of copyright law. Whether copying or using a game image is lawful depends on the applicable jurisdiction and circumstances. PPSSPP also points to free demos and homebrew as game options; avoid unauthorized download sources.
3. Load the game in PPSSPP
- Open PPSSPP.
- On the Games tab, browse to the folder containing the ISO, CSO, CHD, or game folder with
EBOOT.PBP. - Select the game file to start it.
On Windows and macOS, you can also choose File > Load and select the game file. The Games tab is the straightforward option when you want PPSSPP to browse to a folder containing your games.

4. Start with default settings, then adjust if needed
PPSSPP’s introduction and quickstart says its defaults are generally fine, so try launching the game before changing graphics options. For smoother or more reliable performance, check that your graphics drivers are current and consult PPSSPP’s settings documentation if you need to change graphics backends.
Hardware guidance is broad rather than a promise for every game: PPSSPP says nearly any PC made in the last 15 years should have little to no issue, while its FAQ points to a reasonably modern CPU and a GPU capable of OpenGL 3.0. It notes Vulkan may help where available. Actual results vary with the computer, drivers, game, and settings.

5. Choose keyboard or controller controls
You can play without buying a controller; a gamepad is optional. PPSSPP supports many controllers, and its FAQ describes Windows support for XInput and DirectInput. The hardware guidance lists Xbox and PlayStation controllers and Logitech models among tested examples. Connect your controller, then configure or check its bindings in PPSSPP’s control settings if the game does not respond as expected.
Do you need a PSP BIOS?
No. PPSSPP simulates the PSP BIOS and internal operating system, so a separate BIOS file is not needed. The emulator does not run the PSP XMB menu. Do not download a BIOS to make this setup work; see the explanation in the PPSSPP FAQ.
