If you plan to use a Steam Deck, inspect that game’s compatibility details. Availability, online features and compatibility vary by title, seller, region and device; a Store page or an old key listing alone cannot settle them.
Can you still buy the exact game?
Search for the game in the Steam Store while signed in to the account and region you intend to use. Check that the page offers a purchase option for the edition you want. An old Store URL, a delisting claim or the existence of a third-party key listing does not prove that a key can be activated or that it includes the edition or content you expect.

If considering an external CD key, check the seller’s stated region eligibility and refund terms before paying. Steam says third-party key restrictions vary by publisher; gifts bought directly through Steam can also be region-restricted. - Confirm the exact title and edition, not just a similar name or bundle.
- Check whether the route is a direct Steam purchase or a key from another seller.
- For an outside key, verify region eligibility, included content and the seller’s refund policy before purchase.
Will it run on your PC?
Read the game’s current Store page under System Requirements. Check supported operating systems as well as processor, memory, graphics and other listed requirements. Steam notes that a game may fail because its operating system is unsupported even when the computer’s hardware appears adequate. Steam Support: System requirements and compatibility

Separate the game’s bitness from Windows support
Steam ended support for 32-bit versions of Windows on January 1, 2026. Steam says existing installations may continue to work in the near term, but they no longer receive Steam client updates or support, and continued functionality is not guaranteed. This is about the operating system running the Steam client: 32-bit games can still run on 64-bit Windows 10. Will it work on Steam Deck?
Look up the specific game in the Steam Store and read its Steam Deck Compatibility details. Steam uses four categories:

- Verified: Works well on Deck by default.
- Playable: Works, but may require configuration or other adjustments.
- Unsupported: Steam does not consider it playable on Deck.
- Unknown: Steam has not tested it.

Do the features you care about still work?
A Store listing or Deck rating cannot establish whether a particular older game still has working online servers, multiplayer, patches, saves, a required launcher or DRM. These details are title-specific and may change. Check current publisher information and recent reports about the exact game, and verify that any online or launcher requirements fit how you intend to play.

Steam’s local network game transfer feature does not provide a license. It copies game installation or update files between eligible online Steam clients, excludes local saves and configurations, and requires that the game be publicly released and playable by both users. For games and software bought on Steam, the standard refund policy allows a request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Find the exact listing: Sign in to the intended Steam account and region, then confirm that the exact title and edition have a legitimate purchase route.
- Check the seller and key: If buying outside Steam, verify the key’s region eligibility, included edition and seller refund terms.
- Compare the requirements with your device: Review supported operating systems and hardware on the game’s Store page; check your actual OS version and architecture.
- Check Deck details if relevant: Read the game’s rating and the specific unmet criteria shown on its Store page.
- Verify the features you need: Look for current information about servers, multiplayer, launchers, DRM, patches and saves.
- Understand access and refunds: Account for Steam’s license-based access terms and the refund policy before purchasing.
