Yes, some purchased PC games can be played without an internet connection, but buying a game does not guarantee offline access. Prepare while you are online: update the launcher and title, launch the exact game to the main menu or gameplay, finish first-run setup, enable the platform’s documented offline mode, and test with your connection deliberately disabled. Keep installers, patches, saves, configuration files and prerequisites on separate storage.
That preparation cannot defeat a game’s own activation or authentication service. A launcher may be ready for offline use while a title protected by a second launcher, server check or other digital-rights-management (DRM) system still refuses to start.

What actually determines whether a game works offline
Offline play depends on three separate layers:
- Your entitlement: The storefront must recognize that the account owns the game and have cached the necessary license data.
- The launcher: Steam, Epic Games Launcher or the EA app must support an offline session for that title. Each platform has different preparation rules.
- The game’s own checks: A second launcher, online activation, periodic authentication, server-hosted gameplay or anti-tamper component can impose requirements that the storefront cannot remove.
These layers explain why two single-player games bought from the same store can behave differently. “Offline mode” is a launcher feature, not a universal promise that every installed title will start without contacting a server.

Do this for every title you may need during travel, an outage or a service disruption. Prepare the exact game, not merely the launcher library.

- Update everything while online. Install the latest launcher update and let the game finish downloading. Check that no queued patch, shader compilation, DLC installation or first-run download remains.
- Launch the title itself. Start the game from the launcher and reach the main menu or actual gameplay. Opening the library page is not enough; this is when activation, redistributables, shader caches and first-run files are commonly created.
- Complete setup. Install required DirectX or Visual C++ components, configure a controller, accept the game’s license prompts and verify that purchased DLC is installed. If the title opens a second launcher, sign in there while connected and note that dependency.
- Save credentials as required. Some launchers offer a “remember me” or cached-login option. If a platform does not cache your login and later asks for a password while disconnected, do not expect a local workaround.
- Enable the platform’s offline setting. Use the instructions for your storefront below. If possible, close and reopen the launcher once while still connected after enabling the setting.
- Test deliberately. Disable Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, then start the exact title. Test a new save and an existing save. Restore the connection afterward and check that progress synchronizes normally.
- Make a recovery copy. Copy installers, patches, save folders, configuration files, redistributables and any separate-launcher installers to an external SSD or USB drive. Keep the backup disconnected when it is not being updated.
Record which games use a second launcher or third-party DRM. That list tells you which titles are most vulnerable when an authentication service is unavailable.
Steam: complete the game’s checks, then choose Go Offline
Required preparation
Steam’s official Offline Mode procedure requires the client to be started online, all game files to be completely updated and each intended game to be launched once. The first launch must finish any remaining installation or update requirement; merely seeing the game in your library does not satisfy that check.
Enable and verify Offline Mode
- Open Steam while connected.
- Confirm the title shows no pending download or update.
- Launch the game and reach its main menu or gameplay.
- Exit the game and select Steam > Go Offline.
- Restart Steam if practical, disconnect from the internet and launch the title again.
Steam states that client features requiring a connection are unavailable in Offline Mode. Multiplayer matchmaking, community functions, cloud synchronization and other network services therefore cannot be assumed to work.

If Steam asks you to log in
Valve’s support guidance is explicit: when the Steam client requires a login while offline, there is no way to bypass that requirement without going online. Reconnect, sign in, launch the game successfully and repeat the offline test. A local installer or copied game folder does not replace a required Steam login.
Steam Backup is only one layer
Steam includes a Backup feature, but Valve warns that many games using third-party installers or downloaders will not work with that backup. Preserve the game’s saves, configuration, redistributables and any separate launcher installer in addition to the Steam backup. The backup can restore files; it cannot remove a title’s own authentication requirement.

Epic Games Launcher: offline mode is automatic but title support varies
Epic’s Offline Mode is intended for supported single-player games that are already installed. The launcher enables it automatically when the device loses internet access or when the launcher starts without a connection.
What to check before disconnecting
- Install the game completely while online.
- Launch it once and finish first-run setup.
- Close the launcher, disconnect the network and start Epic Games Launcher again.
- Open the title and verify that it reaches gameplay.
Not all games support Epic’s Offline Mode. Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements and other online services may be unavailable even when the single-player executable starts. If the game requires a separate launcher or an online activation check, Epic’s automatic switch cannot override that requirement.

GOG: use offline backup installers for the most independent recovery
GOG documents the most self-contained installation path. From your account page, choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS, download every setup file the title requires and store those files on separate storage. Run the installer directly and then launch the installed executable; the GOG application is not required for this installation path.
Download before you need the files
Offline installers are generated after a build is published and may take several hours to appear. Download and verify them before a trip or expected outage rather than waiting until the service is unavailable. Keep the installer, language packs, patches and bonus-content files together, and retain a copy of your saves and configuration separately.
A DRM-free or offline-installer package removes the need for the storefront application during installation, but it does not make an inherently online game playable. A title that relies on a live server for gameplay remains dependent on that server.

EA app: an online launch starts a 30-day offline window
EA’s current support instructions require the game to have been launched at least once online before Offline Mode can be used. EA says that, in offline mode, you can play only games that do not need an internet connection.

EA states: “A game will work offline for 30 days since it was last launched online.” Treat this as a rolling requirement for titles covered by that policy. Reconnect and launch the game online before the 30-day window expires if the title and EA’s current policy still require it.
Practical procedure
- Sign in to the EA app while connected.
- Update the app and the game completely.
- Launch the exact title and reach gameplay.
- Close the game, disconnect the network and restart the app or title in offline mode.
- Record the date of the successful online launch so you know when the 30-day period approaches.
Online multiplayer, cloud features and any game service that needs a server remain unavailable. The 30-day allowance also does not override separate DRM or another launcher’s authentication.
Why a storefront’s offline switch cannot defeat third-party DRM
Some games perform their own activation or periodic authentication. The storefront may report that the files are installed and the launcher may be offline-ready, yet the game can still contact a publisher server before showing its menu.
The Ubisoft-published Assassin’s Creed Origins end-user license agreement illustrates the distinction. It says an internet connection, a Uplay account and the Uplay client are required to activate the game after installation on a new computer and that the computer may be authenticated at any time. The agreement also describes DRM software and Denuvo anti-tamper technology. Its activation terms specify a limit of five distinct computers in a 24-hour period.

If that authorization server is unavailable, a local installation may fail to launch. Copying the game directory, restoring a storefront backup or selecting a launcher’s offline option cannot repair a server-side authorization failure. The practical choices are to reconnect when the service returns, use a separately documented offline installer if the title provides one, or choose another game that does not require the unavailable check.

An external SSD or USB drive is useful because it can hold large installers and patches without consuming the internal drive. Storage capacity depends on the size of your library; do not assume one drive will hold every title.

After copying, open the backup drive and verify that files are readable. Keep at least one copy disconnected from the computer to reduce the risk that ransomware or accidental deletion affects both the working installation and the backup.
Which online features disappear offline

When you reconnect, allow the launcher to synchronize before moving between computers. If you played on more than one device while disconnected, make a manual copy of the newest save first; automatic cloud conflict dialogs can otherwise select the wrong version.

The launcher says the game is not available offline
- Reconnect and update both launcher and game.
- Launch the exact title to gameplay, not just the library.
- Complete DLC, redistributable and first-run setup.
- Enable the documented offline mode and test again.
- Check whether the title is excluded from that platform’s offline support.
The game opens a second launcher
Sign in to the second launcher while online, update it and launch the title through that dependency once. Record the requirement and preserve the installer. If that launcher demands a fresh online login every time, the title is not reliably offline-capable.

The game asks for activation after reinstalling
Restore the required launcher and license data, then reconnect to activate. A copied executable or Steam Backup cannot satisfy an activation server that the title contacts independently.
Saves are missing
Look for the game’s local save directory and user-profile folders rather than relying only on cloud storage. Copy those folders before uninstalling or changing Windows accounts. Some games keep saves beside the executable; others use a hidden user directory, so preserve the complete profile folder when the location is unclear.
The game works once, then stops after a period offline
Check for a time-based policy. EA’s documented allowance is 30 days from the last online launch. Other titles may use their own authentication schedules, which are not changed by the storefront’s offline switch.
A reliable outage and travel test
- Choose the games you genuinely expect to play.
- Update and launch each one while online.
- Finish every setup prompt and install all owned DLC needed for the test.
- Enable the platform’s offline mode or confirm that it enters offline mode automatically.
- Restart the computer with the network disconnected.
- Start each title from the same account and device you will use during the outage.
- Load an existing save, create a new save and exit normally.
- Reconnect and confirm that the saves and launcher state remain intact.
Testing this way exposes missing prerequisites, forgotten second launchers and cached-login failures while support services are still reachable.
