His live kit no longer includes Pig Pen. Since April 2026, Hook has an 8-second cooldown and Scrap Gun reloads in 1.75 seconds, so a missed or low-value Hook costs more than it used to.
What changed in Roadhog’s current kit?
Blizzard’s current Roadhog hero page lists Scrap Gun, Chain Hook, Take a Breather, and Whole Hog. The August 29, 2025 update removed Pig Pen, moved Take a Breather to Ability 2, and restored classic primary and secondary Scrap Gun fire. That means older advice built around Hooking an enemy into Pig Pen does not describe the current kit. Blizzard’s August 29, 2025 patch notes document those changes.

Blizzard’s November 2023 rework was intended to improve Roadhog’s frontline presence while reducing frustration from a consistently deadly Hook combo. Blizzard described that goal in its November 14, 2023 developer comments. The subsequent 2025 changes restored a different ability configuration, so the 2023 kit details should not be treated as current instructions.
How to use Hook without wasting its threat
Chain Hook’s job is to drag a targeted enemy to Roadhog. The most useful Hook is not simply one that connects: it changes an enemy’s position in a way your team can exploit or removes an exposed opponent from a safer position. A pull that leaves its target protected or unsupported may spend the cooldown without creating meaningful pressure.

- Look for a valuable target. Prefer an opponent who is separated, exposed, or about to cross into Hook range. Consider whether your allies can follow up before committing.
- Hook when the displacement matters. Aim to pull the target into a position where you can threaten them and your team has a chance to act.
- Follow with Scrap Gun at close range. The weapon’s primary fire is a short-range spread attack, which suits a target pulled directly toward you.
- Use cover if Hook misses or has little effect. Do not advance as though Hook were still ready; maintain gun pressure from a safer angle until it is available again.
This is a tactical sequence, not a guaranteed elimination combo. The available official sources do not establish universal damage breakpoints or one-shot outcomes, which can also depend on armor, mitigation, ally actions, and target movement.
Why Hook discipline matters more now
In its April 2026 balance update, Blizzard raised Chain Hook’s cooldown from 6 to 8 seconds and said the changes were intended to make the combo less frequent and Hook use more deliberate. The same update increased Scrap Gun reload time from 1.5 to 1.75 seconds, removed Invigorate, and added Hogdrogen Exposure. See the April 2026 patch notes. Those changes make cover and gun pressure especially important after a missed Hook: the cooldown window is longer, and the reload takes more time.

Where to stand and how to pressure space
Roadhog’s short-range primary fire and enemy-pulling Hook make corners, chokepoints, and constrained angles natural places to threaten approaches. This positioning advice is a practical inference from his documented abilities, not a map-specific rule. Hold a position where an enemy who crosses the angle may face a close-range shot or a meaningful pull, while keeping a retreat path.
- Use cover to limit how many opponents can damage you at once.
- Expose briefly to threaten a shot or Hook, then return to cover when the angle becomes dangerous.
- Do not walk into several opponents’ crossfire just to appear on the frontline.
- Judge a Hook by the position it creates, not only by whether it lands.
Roadhog can contest space through threat, angles, and punishment of approaches; his current kit description does not include a barrier. Do not treat him as a shield tank or assume he can protect teammates by absorbing all incoming fire.

When to use Take a Breather
Take a Breather heals Roadhog and reduces damage taken. Use it when incoming pressure makes that defensive effect useful and the recovery helps you keep contesting space. If you have drifted too far from cover, opponents may be able to keep focusing you while you recover. The right moment depends on the fight, including enemy burst and allied support, so there is no single safe timing rule.
Blizzard’s August 2025 notes say that, when Take a Breather is toggled, Ability 1 and either Scrap Gun fire can cancel it, with a 0.6-second minimum before cancellation. The hero page notes that its displayed PC keys are defaults and can be changed. Check your own control settings if the ability behaves differently from a guide’s listed inputs.

Which Roadhog perks fit your plan?
The current hero page lists two minor perks and two major perks. The effects suggest different choices depending on engagement distance, how often you land Hook, whether allies stay nearby, and whether you need personal or team sustain; they do not establish a universal best pick.
| Perk | Effect on the current hero page | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Scrap Hook (minor) | Reloads 2 ammo when Hook hits. | Consider it when you expect reliable Hook connections and want ammunition for follow-up. |
| Shrapnel Launcher (minor) | Extends secondary-fire range by 50% and tightens its burst spread by 25%. | Consider it when you often pressure opponents beyond primary-fire range. |
| Hogdrogen Exposure (major) | Take a Breather heals nearby allies for 50% of its healing. | Consider it when teammates are often close enough to benefit and team sustain is useful. |
| Pulled Pork (major) | Grants overhealth based on Hook pull distance, up to 300. | Consider it when longer pulls are realistically available and extra personal durability is valuable. |
With Hogdrogen Exposure, using Take a Breather near teammates can also help them, but that effect is not a substitute for support healing or a reason to expose yourself in an unsafe position. With Pulled Pork, the current hero page’s maximum is 300 overhealth; do not rely on the earlier 250 maximum printed in the initial 2025 patch notes.

Scrap Gun’s two fires serve different distances. Blizzard describes primary fire as a short-range spread weapon. Secondary fire launches a medium-range projectile that explodes into the short-range primary fire. Use primary fire when a target is close, including after a successful Hook; use secondary fire to pressure at a more moderate distance. Shrapnel Launcher modifies secondary fire’s range and spread, but it does not change the distinction between the two firing modes.
