Pick Roadhog if you want to threaten one enemy with Chain Hook and sustain yourself with Take a Breather. Pick Mauga if you prefer chaingun pressure, an unstoppable charge, and Cage Fight. Neither is a universal upgrade: the better choice depends on how you want to enter and shape a fight, plus the current balance patch.
How their kits create different threats
Roadhog: isolate a target and stay in the fight
Roadhog’s Scrap Gun fires a short-range spread, while its secondary fire sends a medium-range projectile that bursts into the primary fire. Chain Hook pulls a targeted enemy toward him, creating a chance to bring one opponent into a close-range fight. Take a Breather heals Roadhog and reduces the damage he takes. His Whole Hog ultimate damages and knocks back enemies in front of him, making it a tool for pressure and displacement rather than the same kind of containment Mauga offers. Mauga: apply sustained pressure and commit to a brawl
Mauga’s kit includes the Incendiary and Volatile Chainguns, Overrun, Cardiac Overdrive, Berserker, and Cage Fight. Overrun is a forward charge and stomp that launches enemies; Mauga is unstoppable while charging. Berserker grants temporary health when he deals critical damage. Cage Fight deploys a barrier that traps Mauga and enemies inside it. Together, those abilities give him a direct way to engage and keep pressure on opponents, while Cage Fight changes the space in which the fight happens. What the latest documented balance changes mean
In Blizzard’s September 2026 notes, Mauga’s Overrun cooldown in 5v5 increased from 5 to 6 seconds. Blizzard’s developer comment explains the intent: “Increasing Overrun’s cooldown lengthens the window where Mauga must commit to a fight before he can disengage, reducing his mobility without directly impacting his ability to engage.” In practical terms, the change leaves Overrun as an engagement tool but lengthens the wait before Mauga can use it again to reposition or leave. Several 2026 updates also make older guides particularly liable to misstate details. In June, Chain Hook gained the ability to hit teammates and pull Roadhog to a teammate, and Take a Breather began generating nearby poison gas that deals damage. The same update removed Cardiac Overdrive’s former ally damage-reduction and lifesteal effects and changed its duration, movement, and healing-resource mechanics; it also made Overrun stomp damage scale with height. Blizzard’s July notes changed Mauga’s chaingun spread behavior and included a July 28 bug-fix update. These are dated changes, not a guarantee that every detail remains unchanged in later patches. Consult the official patch notes and the live in-game ability descriptions before relying on exact present-day details.

- Choose Roadhog if your preferred threat is pulling an individual enemy into close range and you want an explicitly described self-heal with damage reduction.
- Choose Mauga if you want a chaingun-focused brawl, an unstoppable charge to initiate, and an ultimate that traps enemies in a barrier.
- Reconsider based on the fight: map, enemy picks, team composition, game mode, and subsequent balance updates can all change which kit is more useful in a particular match.
