Roblox does not provide a universal Windows-client setting that lets you enter any arbitrary resolution. To play at a different resolution, change the selected monitor’s resolution in Windows, then adjust Roblox’s separate Graphics Quality setting if performance or image quality needs tuning. Your available resolutions are limited by the monitor, GPU, driver, connection, refresh rate, and aspect ratio.
That distinction matters: Windows controls the display resolution, while Roblox controls the quality of the image it renders. They affect clarity and performance in different ways.

Resolution, render quality, and window size are different settings
“Resolution” can mean several things on a PC:
- Display resolution: the width and height sent to the monitor, such as 1920×1080 or 2560×1440.
- Render quality: how much visual detail Roblox draws. Roblox exposes this through its Graphics Quality setting.
- Window size: the dimensions of the Roblox window when it is windowed, maximized, borderless, or fullscreen.
- Aspect ratio: the relationship between width and height, such as 16:9, 16:10, or 21:9.
Changing Roblox’s Graphics Quality slider is not the same as changing Windows’ output resolution. A lower graphics setting can reduce the work required from your PC while leaving the desktop and game output at the same resolution. Conversely, lowering Windows resolution can reduce rendering work but may make the image softer or cause scaling problems.
Roblox’s official graphics instructions document Graphics Mode and the Graphics Quality slider, not a general in-game resolution selector for every possible Windows display mode. Use Windows and, when necessary, your GPU control panel to select the display mode.

How to change the resolution Roblox uses
1. Select the monitor Roblox should use
If your PC has more than one monitor, first choose the display where you want to play:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Click the monitor shown in the layout that you want Roblox to use.
- Use Identify if you are not sure which numbered display corresponds to which physical monitor.
- Arrange the displays so their on-screen positions match your desk.
Windows provides per-display controls for resolution, scaling, orientation, and multiple-monitor layout. See Microsoft’s current screen resolution and display layout instructions if the labels differ on your version of Windows.
2. Choose a Windows display resolution
- Remain in Settings > System > Display.
- Select the intended monitor.
- Expand Display resolution.
- Choose one of the available resolutions.
- Click Keep changes when Windows asks you to confirm.
The option marked Recommended is normally the monitor’s native resolution and is the best starting point for a sharp image. For example, a 1920×1080 monitor generally looks clearest at 1920×1080 because the source image maps more directly to the panel’s physical pixels.

A lower resolution may improve performance, particularly on less powerful hardware, but it can look softer. Depending on the monitor and scaling configuration, it may also appear centered with borders, stretched across the panel, or surrounded by black bars.
Windows cannot offer every width-and-height combination. A mode must be supported by the display and graphics hardware, and it may also depend on the GPU driver, cable or connection type, refresh rate, and monitor firmware. If a resolution is absent from the list, do not assume Roblox can force it safely.
3. Relaunch or resize Roblox
Start Roblox after applying the Windows change. If Roblox was already running, close and relaunch the client so it can detect the updated display mode. In windowed play, resize or maximize the Roblox window as needed. The exact fullscreen and window behavior can vary by current Roblox client version and system configuration, so avoid relying on undocumented shortcuts or configuration-file edits.

Adjust Roblox Graphics Quality separately
Once the display resolution is correct, tune Roblox’s rendering load inside an experience:
- Join a Roblox experience.
- Press Esc, or click the Roblox logo to open the in-experience menu.
- Open Settings.
- Find Graphics Mode.
- Choose Manual if you want to control the quality yourself.
- Move the Graphics Quality slider left for better performance or right for more visual detail.
Automatic lets the device manage the graphics level. Manual gives you a predictable setting that you can adjust while testing a new resolution.
A useful order is:
- Set the desired resolution in Windows.
- Set Roblox Graphics Mode to Manual.
- Lower Graphics Quality until stuttering stops.
- Raise it gradually if performance remains stable.
Roblox’s guidance on Graphics Quality explains that higher settings improve visual quality but require more from the device. Lowering the slider is usually the first fix for graphics-related lag.
Choose how a non-native resolution fills the screen
Suppose you select a 1280×720 image on a 1920×1080 monitor, or use a 16:9 resolution on a display with a different aspect ratio. A scaler must decide how to fit that image to the panel.

AMD calls these options Preserve aspect ratio, Full panel, and Center. NVIDIA uses corresponding names such as Aspect ratio, Full-screen, and No scaling. The exact location and wording can change with the driver version.
NVIDIA: change scaling behavior
On a PC with an NVIDIA GPU:
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Under Display, select Adjust desktop size and position.
- Open the Scaling tab.
- Choose Aspect ratio, Full-screen, or No scaling.
- Choose whether scaling should be performed by the GPU or display when that option is available.
- Apply the change, then test Roblox.
Use Aspect ratio to avoid geometric distortion, Full-screen to fill the panel, and No scaling to keep the lower-resolution image centered. NVIDIA documents these controls in its guide to scaling the desktop.

If NVIDIA does not show the resolution you want
Check NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Change resolution for additional supported modes. NVIDIA also provides custom-resolution controls for advanced users. A custom mode should only be created when the display and GPU explicitly support its timing and refresh rate. An unsafe or unsupported timing can produce a blank screen or an unusable signal, so custom resolutions are not a general solution for making Roblox run at literally any width and height.
AMD Radeon: use GPU Scaling
For Radeon graphics, open AMD Software or Radeon settings and look for the display section containing GPU Scaling. Select the equivalent of:
- Preserve aspect ratio to prevent stretching;
- Full panel to fill the monitor;
- Center to keep the image at its source size.
AMD says GPU Scaling requires a digital connection such as DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort, with the display set to its native resolution and refresh rate and a supported current driver. Radeon Software labels and menu locations can vary between versions. AMD’s GPU Scaling documentation describes the available behaviors and prerequisites.

Intel graphics and integer scaling
Intel graphics drivers may expose integer or retro scaling for older-style low-resolution content. Integer scaling enlarges an image in whole-number steps, which can keep pixel edges crisp. It can also leave unused space when the source and panel aspect ratios differ or when the panel dimensions are not an integer multiple of the source.
For normal Roblox gameplay, start with the ordinary aspect-ratio, full-panel, or centered options. Integer scaling is mainly useful when you deliberately want a crisp low-resolution presentation rather than a smoothly interpolated fullscreen image. Fix black bars, stretching, or a cropped Roblox image
Use this order rather than changing several settings at once:
- Return to the monitor’s native resolution. Confirm the refresh rate is also supported.
- Preserve the aspect ratio. Select NVIDIA Aspect ratio or AMD Preserve aspect ratio if characters and circular objects look stretched.
- Use Full-screen or Full panel only when appropriate. This removes borders but may distort a mismatched image.
- Try No scaling or Center. This prevents the scaler from expanding the image, but borders are expected.
- Check a television’s overscan. If the desktop or Roblox interface is cut off at the edges, open the TV’s picture settings and look for a PC, 1:1, Just Scan, Full Pixel, Unscaled, or Screen Fit mode. Manufacturers use different names. NVIDIA lists several common overscan-related labels in its desktop resizing reference.
- Update the graphics driver. An unexpected resolution change or disappearing list of modes can indicate a driver problem.
Black bars are not necessarily an error. With aspect-ratio-preserving scaling, they are the normal way to avoid stretching an image whose shape does not match the display.
What to do if Roblox lags after changing resolution
First identify the type of lag:
- Graphics lag: the picture stutters, freezes briefly, or has an inconsistent frame rate.
- Network lag: players or actions appear to warp, respond late, or update slowly even when the image itself is smooth.
For graphics lag, lower Roblox Graphics Quality, close unnecessary demanding applications, and test again. A lower resolution can also reduce the rendering workload, but it may not solve a CPU bottleneck, overheating, background process, or network problem. Roblox’s lag and performance guidance covers the distinction and recommends lowering graphics levels for graphics-related problems.
If Roblox reports graphics errors or fails to render correctly:
- Check that the PC supports DirectX 10 or higher feature-level support.
- Install a current driver for the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU.
- Make sure compatibility mode is not enabled for the Roblox executable.
- Undo recent custom-resolution or scaling changes.
- Return Windows to the monitor’s Recommended resolution and test again.
Roblox identifies outdated drivers, unsupported graphics hardware, and changed graphics settings as possible causes of computer graphics problems in its graphics troubleshooting guidance.

These settings may affect presentation or latency on supported systems, but they do not create arbitrary monitor resolutions. They are optional troubleshooting steps, not a replacement for Windows display settings or Roblox Graphics Quality. Microsoft’s current explanation is available in its guide to optimizations for windowed games.
When the monitor is the limitation
If the desired native resolution, aspect ratio, or refresh rate is not supported by your current panel, software cannot turn that panel into a different one. A gaming monitor with the native resolution, refresh rate, aspect ratio, and inputs you actually need is the relevant hardware upgrade—not a guaranteed Roblox setting.

Resolution and refresh rate can be constrained by the panel, GPU output, connection standard, driver, and the combination of resolution and refresh rate being requested. If the monitor already supports the mode but Windows does not list it, investigate the driver and connection before replacing hardware.
Current PC requirements to keep in mind
Roblox’s current requirements page says the Windows application installs on 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 and requires DirectX 10 or higher feature-level support. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the current mainstream Windows target even though Roblox’s stated application requirement still lists Windows 10 and Windows 11. Roblox also lists Linux as unsupported; changing the resolution cannot make the Windows client officially supported on Linux. Frequently Asked Questions
Can Roblox run at any resolution on PC?
Not literally any arbitrary resolution. Roblox uses display modes made available by Windows and the graphics driver, while the monitor, GPU, connection, refresh rate, and aspect ratio determine which modes are possible. Roblox’s documented Windows settings focus on Graphics Mode and Graphics Quality rather than a universal resolution-entry box.
Does lowering Roblox Graphics Quality lower the resolution?
No. Graphics Quality changes rendering detail and workload. To change the Windows output resolution, use Settings > System > Display > Display resolution.

Why does Roblox have black bars after I change resolution?
Black bars usually mean scaling is preserving the source aspect ratio instead of stretching it to fill the panel. Select Full-screen or Full panel if you accept distortion, or keep Aspect ratio/Preserve aspect ratio to retain correct proportions.
Why is Roblox stretched on my monitor or TV?
The source resolution and display aspect ratios may differ, or the GPU/display may be using full-panel scaling. Choose Aspect ratio or Preserve aspect ratio. On a TV, also disable overscan with a setting such as Just Scan, Full Pixel, or Screen Fit.
Can a new HDMI or DisplayPort cable add a missing Roblox resolution?
A connection can limit which resolution-and-refresh-rate combinations are available, but a cable alone cannot create a mode unsupported by the monitor or GPU. Check the display specifications, driver, refresh rate, and connection together.
The Bottom Line
For the clearest Roblox image, use the monitor’s Windows Recommended resolution. For a different presentation, select an available Windows mode, choose aspect-ratio-preserving, full-panel, or centered scaling in the GPU driver, and then tune Roblox Graphics Quality separately. If the mode is not offered by Windows or the driver, the display hardware—not Roblox—sets the boundary.
