First, check which Sombra you mean. Blizzard’s October 2023 rework made her a more committed, active Damage hero; an October 2024 revision changed several of those mechanics; and official Season 5 material from 2026 describes a later Support rework. The practical ability advice below is specifically for the 2023 Damage kit, not a guide to the current live kit. The latest official material represented here names new Support abilities but does not establish their full values or a reliable current rotation.
Which Sombra rework does this guide cover?
“After her rework” is ambiguous: Sombra’s abilities changed more than once. Use the table to identify which version a guide, video, or discussion describes. The dates and details below refer to Blizzard’s patch notes or announcement for the named period; they should not be read as one simultaneous kit.
| Version | Role and defining change | What that means for this guide |
|---|---|---|
| October 2023, Season 7 | Damage. Stealth became passive, Translocator became a quick automatic teleport, and Virus was added. | The detailed tactics in this article apply to this historical version. |
| October 2024 revision | Damage. Blizzard changed Stealth and Hack again, increased Translocator’s cooldown, and restored Opportunist. | Some advice for the 2023 kit was already outdated after this revision. |
| Season 5, 2026 | Support. Official material describes Hotfix, Cyberspace, and Conspirator, with Hack and Virus removed. | This is a different kit. The available official descriptions do not establish enough detail for a responsible ability-by-ability playbook. |
Blizzard’s indexed hero-page results have shown conflicting Damage and Support descriptions. Treat an undated or localized hero-page snapshot cautiously; check the latest official patch notes for the game version you are playing before relying on specific controls, timings, or ability advice.
What was the 2023 rework trying to change?
The October 2023 rework was designed to make Sombra commit more when she engaged, make her abilities feel more active, and preserve her Hacker identity. Blizzard Hero Design Team member Andre Abrahamian described the goals as: “make Sombra commit to the fight more when engaging, increase the active feel in her ability kit, and uphold the current Hacker fantasy.”

That design intent matters when interpreting the 2023 tactics: the kit rewarded deliberate engagement choices rather than relying on a long-planned escape after taking a low-risk solo fight. It is Blizzard’s stated design goal, not a claim that one tactic is optimal on every map, rank, or team.
How did the 2023 Damage kit’s abilities work?
Stealth: plan around the re-entry conditions
In the October 2023 kit, Stealth was passive. It activated after 3.5 seconds without shooting, using a damaging ability, or taking damage. Its movement-speed bonus was reduced from 60% to 45%. Hacking an enemy hero canceled Stealth, and attacking or taking damage interrupted the conditions needed to enter it again.
For practical purposes, separate your approach from your engagement. Use concealment to choose an entry and target; once you attack or expose yourself by hacking, assume you have committed to the fight rather than expecting to vanish immediately. After disengaging, create enough distance and time to meet the passive’s conditions before depending on Stealth again.

Hack and Virus: weigh the exposure against the pressure
Virus was introduced as a projectile that dealt damage over time, with damage arriving more quickly against hacked targets. Because hacking an enemy hero broke Stealth in this version, the Hack–Virus interaction was a decision about timing and exposure as well as damage.
Use the interaction when the target and situation justify revealing your position. If you need concealment more than immediate pressure, do not treat Hack as a mandatory opener. If you choose to reveal yourself, be ready to follow through, reposition, or leave rather than assuming the target will remain vulnerable while you safely reset.
Translocator: choose a destination, not a parked escape
In 2023, Translocator teleported Sombra automatically 0.25 seconds after it was thrown or when it hit the environment. Teleporting reduced the Stealth passive cooldown. Unlike a beacon left behind for a later manual return, the throw committed you to an immediate destination.

Before throwing it, decide where you want to arrive and what you will do next. Use the teleport to reposition toward a useful angle, create separation, or move out of danger; avoid throwing it without a destination plan. Since it activated quickly, it was a tool for an immediate movement choice, not a stored guarantee of escape later.
How should you approach a 2023 Sombra engagement?
There is no universal best combo established by the ability descriptions. A sound way to apply the 2023 kit is to make the engagement a sequence of choices, not a fixed button order:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Choose a reason to engage. Identify a target or opening worth exposing yourself for, and know where you want to reposition if the fight turns against you.
- Approach while concealed. Use Stealth to get into position; do not begin the fight on the assumption that you can immediately return to concealment after attacking.
- Decide whether Hack is worth revealing you. Consider the value of its interaction with Virus against the risk of giving up Stealth and alerting the target.
- Apply pressure deliberately. Use Virus as damage pressure, especially when the Hack interaction makes the timing worthwhile. Do not mistake the interaction for a mandatory combo in every situation.
- Reposition with a destination in mind. Throw Translocator toward a useful next position or away from danger, remembering that the teleport happens automatically.
- Reset only when the conditions allow it. After leaving combat, account for the time and actions required before passive Stealth can activate again.
This sequence translates the documented mechanics and design intent into a decision framework. It is not a tested ranking of combos or a map-specific strategy.

What changed in October 2024?
Blizzard’s October 21, 2024 patch notes describe a further Damage-kit revision. It is useful context because advice written for 2023 may not fit even the next version.
- Stealth stopped being passive and instead activated with Translocator for five seconds. Taking damage revealed Sombra for one second rather than ending Stealth.
- Hack no longer ended Stealth, though it revealed Sombra. Its ability-lockout duration was reduced from 1.5 seconds to 1.0 second.
- Translocator’s cooldown increased from five seconds to seven seconds.
- Opportunist returned, providing 20% weapon damage against hacked targets and wall visibility for critically injured enemies.
These are figures for the dated 2024 revision, not confirmed values for the later Support kit.

Official Season 5 material from 2026 describes Sombra moving from Damage to Support. It says Hack and Virus were removed and names three abilities: Hotfix heals an ally over time and can be used while invisible without immediately breaking Stealth; Cyberspace creates an area that heals allies and weakens enemies; Conspirator reveals fully charged enemy ultimates.

The available official descriptions do not provide a complete, dependable account of the current ability values, timings, controls, or perk interactions. Because official indexed hero-page results also conflict, it would be misleading to turn those partial descriptions into exact current instructions or a recommended rotation. For current matches, use the latest in-game ability descriptions and patch notes for your region and game version; the historical 2023 Damage tactics above do not describe that Support kit.
What should you take from older Sombra statistics?
Blizzard’s 2023 Season 7 Director’s Take reported a historical post-rework win-rate increase of 4–5%, with a win rate around 46–47% at Masters and above. Those figures describe the period after the 2023 rework; they are not evidence of current balance or a reason to judge the later Support version.
