What makes Roadhog dangerous—and what creates openings
Blizzard describes Scrap Gun as a short-range spread weapon, with a medium-range secondary projectile that explodes into its primary fire. Chain Hook pulls a targeted enemy to Roadhog; Take a Breather heals him and reduces damage taken; Whole Hog damages and knocks back enemies in front of him. Recent dated changes add two important details. In June 2026, Blizzard said Take a Breather generates poison gas around Roadhog that damages nearby enemies, and that Chain Hook can hit a teammate and pull Roadhog to them. In April 2026, Chain Hook’s cooldown was listed as 8 seconds and Scrap Gun’s reload time as 1.75 seconds; Blizzard said the changes were intended to reduce combo frequency and make Hook use more deliberate. Hook is displacement, not a status effect you can simply cleanse: Blizzard’s February 2026 notes describe it as an effect that moves a target, interrupts channeled abilities, and cannot be cleansed. February 2026 patch notes

How to choose a tank against Roadhog
Pick for the actual map and team plan rather than relying on a fixed counter list. The official materials cited here describe Roadhog’s abilities and balance changes but do not publish a verified ranking of tank counters or counter-pick win rates. Use these questions to compare the tanks available to you:
- Can your team deny a clean Hook lane? Consider whether the pick and team composition can use cover, barriers, or other relevant defensive tools. No single defensive tool should be assumed to stop every Hook in every situation.
- What happens if you are pulled? Account for Hook’s displacement and its ability to interrupt channeled abilities. A tank’s survival or escape options matter only if they work in the specific situation.
- Can you contribute pressure without walking into close range? Roadhog’s primary Scrap Gun is described as short-range, while Breather heals him and reduces damage taken. Look for ways to pressure him without giving him an easy close-range engagement.
- Does the pick still serve the team? Consider objective presence, space control, and protection for allies—not only whether the tank can contest Roadhog directly.
Map geometry, mode, team composition, execution, and current balance can all change the answer. March 2026 notes increased Scrap Gun damage per pellet to 7 and described the change as improving Hook-combo consistency and overall damage; that is dated balance context, not a guarantee that every current setting or mode uses identical values. How to avoid Hook and respond when it is used
Before Roadhog throws Hook
- Use corners and hard cover to break clear sightlines. Avoid standing alone in an exposed lane or repeatedly peeking from the same spot.
- Keep enough distance to avoid making a Hook pull an easy close-range Scrap Gun follow-up, while still playing the objective and supporting your team.
- When Hook is available, avoid committing a channeled ability where a pull could interrupt it.
After Hook misses or is spent
Call that Hook is down and coordinate a brief contest or pressure window. The April 2026 notes list an 8-second cooldown, but that is not eight seconds of guaranteed safety: Roadhog still has other abilities, and the wider fight may make an advance unsafe. Avoid trickling in one player at a time.
When Roadhog uses Take a Breather
When practical, pressure or reposition as a team, but do not crowd him. Breather heals Roadhog and reduces damage taken, while the June 2026 notes say it also creates damaging poison gas around him. Allies near Roadhog should also account for the June change allowing Hook to pull him to a teammate it hits.

When Whole Hog is active
Whole Hog damages and knocks back enemies in front of Roadhog. Move out of its direction or use available cover and defensive resources; the cited description does not establish an exact range or duration.
A simple team plan for the matchup
- Before taking an exposed route: Call Hook status and identify who is most vulnerable to a pull.
- As you move: Use cover, avoid isolated positions, and space out so one pull does not automatically expose several teammates to follow-up.
- When Hook is spent: Coordinate pressure together, while accounting for Breather, Scrap Gun, and other threats rather than assuming the cooldown alone makes the advance safe.
- As abilities change the fight: Track Breather and Whole Hog, and adjust your distance or cover use when poison gas or frontal knockback is relevant.
In Competitive Play, Hero Bans may offer another team-level option. Blizzard’s Season 16 announcement described a vote to remove up to four heroes, with up to two bans per team and no more than two per role. What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Blizzard’s November 14, 2023 developer comments said: “The broad goal of the Roadhog rework was to improve his frontline presence on the battlefield as a tank hero and reduce the frustration enemy players had with how consistently deadly his hook combo has been in the past.” That is context for the rework, not a current counter-pick recommendation. Official sources cited here do not establish a universal best tank counter, a counter-pick win rate, or current pick rates. Roadhog perks have also changed over time: February 2025 notes documented the perk system, while April 2026 notes replaced Invigorate with Hogdrogen Exposure.
