Official online co-op on PC is no longer available. Ubisoft currently states that the game’s online features are unsupported and that its multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional. The original PC manual did list both Internet and Local Area Network (LAN) co-op challenges, but that documentation describes the 2006 service, not a working service today. Direct LAN play on current PCs has not been verified, so treat it as an experiment rather than a supported solution.
The short answer
If you want to play Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Double Agent co-op over the Internet on PC, there is no supported way to do it now. Ubisoft’s current game information says: “Online features for this game are no longer supported. Multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.” That statement covers the game’s official multiplayer functionality, including co-op.

A separate question is whether two computers on the same private network can still connect directly. The original PC manual explicitly described co-op over a LAN, but neither that manual nor Ubisoft’s current store information confirms that LAN sessions work on modern systems. No contemporary official compatibility test or supported replacement service is established. You can attempt a direct LAN test if you already own the game, but you should not buy it expecting a guaranteed co-op experience.

What the original PC version included
The PC edition was released on September 1, 2006, according to Ubisoft’s product information. Its multiplayer menu was broader than a simple online lobby. The original manual told players they could play either Versus or Co-op Challenges over the Internet or a Local Area Network. In other words, co-op was a named mode in the PC game, and LAN was presented as a distinct connection route from Internet play.

Internet co-op in the manual
The manual identifies DemonWare as the service used for Internet play. That reference is historically useful because it explains how the original game expected players to find or connect to one another. It is not evidence that DemonWare still accepts connections for this title. A manual printed for a 2006 release cannot establish the availability of a discontinued backend in 2026.
LAN co-op in the manual
The same instructions list LAN play. A LAN session would have been intended for computers connected to the same local network rather than for players reaching the publisher’s Internet service. That distinction is why some owners wonder whether LAN might survive after online servers disappear. The available official information does not answer that question: it records the original design, while Ubisoft’s present-day status notice says the multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.
Co-op versus Versus
The manual’s wording groups “Versus” and “Co-op Challenges” under the multiplayer menu. They are not interchangeable. Versus describes competitive multiplayer; co-op challenges are the cooperative scenarios. If you reach a multiplayer menu, look specifically for the co-op challenge entry rather than assuming that a working Versus option proves that co-op is available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy the old instructions do not make co-op work now
There are two different kinds of information involved: release-era instructions and a current service-status notice. The manual answers what the PC game was designed to offer. Ubisoft’s current page answers whether the publisher still supports those online features. The current statement takes priority when deciding what you can reliably play today.
“Unsupported” also matters operationally. It means you should not expect a maintained matchmaking service, server-side fixes, account support for multiplayer failures, or a publisher-provided replacement. If a connection attempt fails, the failure is not evidence that you missed a hidden setting; it may simply reflect the discontinued service.

Installing the game, owning an original disc, or activating a legitimate key does not reactivate a retired online backend. The purchase and activation requirements are separate from multiplayer availability.
Account and installation requirements for the PC copy
Ubisoft’s PC store listing says activation requires a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect. That requirement applies to obtaining and launching the PC game through the current distribution path. It does not restore online co-op.

| Original DVD or a digital PC license | Whether you possess the game | It does not guarantee that Internet or LAN co-op will connect |
The manual refers to DVD installation because that was the original release format. A current digital listing may use a different installation process, but the licensing path still should not be confused with a multiplayer service.
Internet co-op: the supported answer
For ordinary online play with a friend across the Internet, the answer is no. Ubisoft’s current game page explicitly says that online features are no longer supported and that multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional. There is no official instruction in the current listing for creating an online lobby, selecting a replacement server, or transferring the game to another service.
That means the following approaches are not supported solutions:

- Using Ubisoft Connect’s offline or online status as proof that the game’s co-op backend is operating.
You may still see multiplayer-related menu items because the game client and its manual were built when the feature existed. A menu’s presence is not confirmation that the required remote service is reachable.

LAN co-op: what you can and cannot claim
LAN is the only potentially different case, because the manual described it as a local route rather than an Internet service. However, the available official sources do not verify a currently working LAN exception. Ubisoft’s broad wording that multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional does not provide a tested LAN procedure, and no current compatibility statement narrows that wording to Internet play only.
Therefore, the accurate position is:
- LAN co-op was part of the original PC design.
- LAN co-op on current PCs is unverified.
- There is no supported guarantee that two modern installations will discover or join one another.
- Virtual-LAN software is not established as a way to revive the game’s original mode.
Do not describe LAN as “working” merely because the menu still contains a LAN choice, because one player’s old anecdote is not a current compatibility test, or because a tunneling program makes two computers appear to share a network. The game may still depend on code, ports, authentication, or version behavior that has not been confirmed.
A cautious LAN test for owners
If you already have two legitimate PC installations and want to find out whether a private session is possible in your particular environment, use the following as an unverified experiment. These steps are not an official fix and do not imply that the test will succeed.
- Confirm that both copies are PC editions. The documented menu and connection choices in the cited manual apply to the PC version. Do not assume that a console edition exposes the same implementation.
- Install and activate both copies through the applicable current PC process. Ubisoft’s store listing requires a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect for PC activation. Complete that step independently of multiplayer testing.
- Place both computers on the same private network. Use the same local network rather than testing across the public Internet. This only recreates the network type described by the manual; it does not prove compatibility.
- Open the game’s multiplayer menu on the host computer. Look for the documented co-op challenge and LAN choices. If the menu is missing, stop: there is no confirmed alternative route in the official material.
- Create a LAN co-op session on one computer. Record exactly whether the game accepts the selection, hangs, returns an error, or immediately sends you back to the menu.
- Search for the session from the second computer. If the host is not visible, do not assume that forwarding a port or changing an Internet setting will solve it; no supported current network recipe is documented.
- Attempt to join only if the session appears. A visible lobby is an intermediate result, not proof that a complete co-op challenge will load. Note whether both players reach the same mission and remain connected.
- Stop if the test fails repeatedly. Because Ubisoft no longer supports the feature, there is no official escalation path that can certify a local workaround.
Keep the result specific to your setup. A successful experiment on two machines does not establish universal support for every Windows version, game build, router, or distribution edition; a failed experiment does not prove that LAN never worked historically.

Diagnosing common outcomes
The multiplayer menu is present, but Internet play fails
This is consistent with Ubisoft’s current status statement. The client can retain its old menu while the remote service is unavailable. Check that the game is activated if you are troubleshooting launch issues, but do not interpret account or Ubisoft Connect success as evidence that DemonWare matchmaking has returned.
The multiplayer menu is missing
First verify that you installed the PC game rather than a different edition or an incomplete component. The original PC manual describes multiplayer and co-op challenges, but current installers and operating systems may present legacy content differently. If the menu remains absent after a valid PC installation, there is no documented supported method for adding it back.
The LAN option appears, but the other computer cannot see the host
This outcome is unresolved by the official information. The manual confirms that LAN was intended, while current Ubisoft materials do not confirm that discovery works now. You can verify that both machines are on the same local network and running the same intended PC release, but further changes are experimentation rather than an established remedy.
The host is visible, but joining fails
Visibility only shows that some discovery step occurred. It does not demonstrate that the co-op mode can authenticate, synchronize, or load a challenge. Capture the exact error and repeat once with both installations freshly launched. If the failure persists, treat the mode as unavailable for your setup; no current official fix is provided.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Activation fails before you can test anything
Resolve the licensing and launcher issue separately. The current PC listing requires a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect, so confirm that the copy is associated with the correct account and that the required launcher can start. Solving activation still will not change the discontinued online-service status.

What unofficial workarounds can and cannot promise
No supported community server, current LAN patch, or reliable unofficial replacement is established by the available official sources. In particular, a virtual-LAN utility may alter how two computers route traffic, but it does not recreate a publisher backend or prove that the game’s local mode works on present-day systems.
Be skeptical of guides that promise guaranteed co-op solely by changing a firewall rule, editing a configuration file, or routing traffic through a third-party tunnel. Such instructions may describe a particular historical setup, a different game build, or an unverified anecdote. Without a current reproducible test and a clearly identified compatible version, they should be treated as experiments, not instructions you can rely on.
Should you buy the PC game for co-op?
Buy it only if your main reason is the single-player campaign or if you accept that co-op may be unavailable. The current PC purchase path requires a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect, and the game itself dates from 2006. Purchasing a copy does not restore official Internet multiplayer, and the status of direct LAN play on modern PCs remains unconfirmed.
| Your goal | Practical decision |
|---|---|
| Guaranteed online co-op with a remote friend | Do not choose this game on the expectation of official support; Ubisoft says the mode is no longer functional |
| Experimenting with two PCs on one network | Possible only as an unverified test using legitimate PC copies; success is not guaranteed |
| Playing the campaign alone | The multiplayer shutdown does not by itself answer single-player questions, so evaluate the PC release for that purpose separately |
| Collecting the original PC release | The manual documents the historical Internet and LAN design, but historical documentation is not a present-day service guarantee |
The bottom line for PC players
There is no supported Internet co-op route for Splinter Cell: Double Agent on PC in 2026. The manual proves that the 2006 PC release was designed with both Internet and LAN co-op challenges, including Internet play through DemonWare. Ubisoft’s current listing says online features are unsupported and multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional. LAN therefore remains an unverified possibility, not a dependable exception. If you test it, frame the attempt as a private compatibility experiment and do not spend money on a copy expecting the purchase to bring official co-op back.
