The simplest route is Valve’s free Steam Link app. Install Steam Link from the Quest Horizon store, run Steam and SteamVR on a Windows PC, connect that PC to your router with Ethernet, put Quest 3 on the same router’s 5 GHz (or 6 GHz) network, and complete the pairing prompts. The PC renders the game; Quest 3 receives the streamed video and audio. A Wi-Fi 6 router is recommended, but Valve lists 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 as the minimum.
What wireless SteamVR on Quest 3 actually does
Quest 3 is not installing or running the Windows SteamVR game locally in this arrangement. SteamVR runs on the Windows computer, which renders each frame, encodes the video, and sends video, audio, and tracking data across your local network. Quest 3 decodes the stream and sends your headset and controller movement back to the computer. The result feels like PC VR without a USB cable, but the quality depends on the PC’s graphics hardware and the network between the PC, router, and headset.

For a library that is already in Steam, Steam Link is the most direct starting point. Valve describes it as streaming Steam-library games to Meta Quest, and the app is free. Air Link and Virtual Desktop are useful alternatives when you want a different PC-VR ecosystem or more streaming controls.

Choose a wireless method
| Method | Cost | Best fit | PC-VR access | Control and setup emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Link | Free | SteamVR games in your Steam library | Steam-focused | Valve’s guided same-network pairing; comparatively short setup |
| Air Link | Included with the Meta Quest PC software | People who also use the Meta PC-VR library | Broader Meta PC-VR route | Uses Meta’s PC app and headset settings; menu names can change with Horizon OS updates |
| Virtual Desktop | Paid Quest app; current price is not stated here | Users who want additional streaming controls or a broader PC connection option | Not limited to Steam-only use | Requires the Quest app and a PC streamer; offers more tuning choices but another component to troubleshoot |
Start with Steam Link when your goal is specifically SteamVR. Move to Air Link if you already depend on Meta’s PC software, or consider Virtual Desktop if you need its additional controls and are comfortable maintaining a separate streamer. All three still depend on a capable PC and a clean local network.

Requirements for Steam Link on Quest 3
Windows PC
Valve’s current requirements list Windows 10 or newer, Steam, and SteamVR. Install both Steam and SteamVR before attempting to pair the headset.
| Component | Valve-listed requirement | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or newer | Keep Windows updated before troubleshooting streaming. |
| VR software | Steam and SteamVR installed | Steam must be signed in and available when Steam Link searches for the PC. |
| Graphics card minimum | NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD RX 570 | Valve excludes AMD RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT because their hardware encoding is not supported for this use. |
| Recommended processor | Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX-8350 equivalent | This is a recommended processor level, not a claim that every lower-end CPU will work. |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM recommended | More memory does not compensate for an unsupported encoder or a poor network. |
| Recommended graphics card | NVIDIA RTX 2070 or better | This is Valve’s recommended tier, not a guaranteed frame rate. |
Raw game performance and video-encoding support are separate checks. A card may launch a conventional monitor game yet fail Steam Link’s encoding requirement. The RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT exclusion is explicit, so do not treat their presence as equivalent to the supported RX 570 minimum.
Router and network
- Valve lists a router capable of 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 as the minimum.
- Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E is recommended for more headroom.
- Connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet. Valve’s setup announcement specifically calls for a wired PC connection.
- Connect Quest 3 to that same router on its 5 GHz band; a 6 GHz connection is also suitable when your router and headset configuration provide it.
- Do not use a guest network that isolates wireless clients from the wired LAN.
- A mesh system can work, but an isolated node or weak wireless backhaul can add instability. Test near the main access point first.
The important topology is PC by Ethernet to the router and headset by a dedicated 5 GHz-or-newer link to that same local network. Internet download speed is not the deciding factor because the game stream stays inside your home network.

Prepare everything before pairing
- Update Windows, your NVIDIA or AMD graphics driver, Steam, SteamVR, and Quest 3 system software.
- Restart the PC and headset after those updates. This clears an old SteamVR process that can prevent discovery.
- Use Ethernet from the gaming PC directly to the principal router or access point. Avoid testing through a wireless PC connection.
- Join Quest 3 to the same home LAN, selecting the router’s 5 GHz or 6 GHz network rather than a guest SSID.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN on the PC. VPN routing or firewall rules can block local discovery even when internet access works.
- Sign in to Steam on the PC with the account that owns the games. Leave Steam running and make SteamVR available before opening Steam Link.
Step-by-step: set up Steam Link
1. Install the app on Quest 3
Put on Quest 3, open the Horizon store, search for Steam Link, and install the official Valve app. It is free to download and supports Quest 3.
2. Start Steam on the computer
On the wired Windows PC, sign in to Steam and install SteamVR if it is not already present. You do not need to launch a game yet, but Steam must be open and able to start SteamVR when Steam Link requests it.
3. Open Steam Link and allow discovery
Launch Steam Link in the headset. The app searches the local network for a computer running Steam. Follow the on-screen pairing flow. If a code or confirmation appears, enter or approve it on the PC exactly as shown.
4. Confirm the account and network
Pairing depends on the headset and PC being on the same local network and on Steam being signed in to the account used by Steam Link. If the PC does not appear, stop here and correct the network or Steam state rather than changing graphics settings.

5. Launch a SteamVR title
After pairing, choose a SteamVR game from the Steam Link interface. SteamVR should start on the PC, and the game view should appear in the headset. Keep the first launch simple: use a title you know starts reliably and avoid changing several settings at once.
6. Stabilize before increasing quality
Begin with conservative render resolution and bandwidth settings. Play for several minutes, then raise one quality setting at a time. These are practical tuning steps, not a Valve performance guarantee; there is no universal frame-rate, bitrate, or latency value that applies to every PC and home network.
How to tune image quality without creating stutter
Wireless VR has a limited time budget for rendering, encoding, transmission, and decoding. Raising game resolution or stream quality can improve clarity while also increasing the work required from the GPU and network. Make one change, test in the same scene, and revert it if motion becomes uneven.
- Reduce render resolution first if the PC is struggling to render the game. This lowers GPU load before you investigate the network.
- Reduce stream quality or bandwidth if the picture breaks up, the display freezes briefly, or movement arrives late despite acceptable game performance.
- Keep the PC wired while tuning. A wireless PC connection adds a second radio hop and makes it difficult to identify the cause.
- Test close to the main access point. If the connection improves there, distance, interference, or mesh backhaul is the likely constraint.
- Change one variable at a time. Simultaneously changing resolution, codec, and bandwidth hides which setting solved or caused the problem.
Valve does not publish a universal Steam Link bitrate, frames-per-second target, or latency promise for every setup. Treat any number shown by a diagnostic overlay as a measurement of your particular PC and network, not a specification for all Quest 3 users.

Air Link: when Meta’s built-in route makes sense
Air Link is Meta’s wireless PC-VR path. It uses the Meta Quest PC application on Windows and is useful when you want to access both SteamVR and the Meta PC-VR library through Meta’s ecosystem. Install and update the Meta PC app, enable Air Link in the relevant PC and headset settings, and follow the pairing prompts shown by your current Horizon OS version.
Meta changes menu labels and locations through Horizon OS updates, so a guide written for an older release may show a different path. The same network fundamentals still apply: Ethernet for the PC, a strong 5 GHz-or-newer headset connection, and no client isolation. Air Link is a reasonable second option if Steam Link’s Steam-focused interface does not fit the rest of your PC-VR library.

Virtual Desktop is a paid Quest application used with a separate streamer program on the PC. It can appeal to users who want additional streaming controls or a broader PC connection option rather than a Steam-only launcher. The current price and any promotional terms are not fixed here, so check the Quest store listing before purchase.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Because Virtual Desktop adds both an app and a PC streamer, it also adds another place for account, firewall, and version mismatches. Use the same network design recommended for Steam Link: wire the computer to the router, connect Quest 3 to 5 GHz or 6 GHz, and avoid guest-network isolation. Its extra controls can be valuable, but they do not remove the need for a supported GPU encoder or a stable local network.

Troubleshooting Steam Link
Steam Link cannot find the PC
- Confirm Steam is open on Windows and signed in to the same account used by Steam Link.
- Confirm SteamVR is installed and available.
- Check that Quest 3 and the PC are on the same LAN. The PC should be Ethernet-connected to the router, while the headset uses 5 GHz or 6 GHz.
- Leave any guest SSID and reconnect to the main home network.
- Disconnect the PC’s VPN temporarily and retest.
- Restart Steam, SteamVR, Quest 3, and the router. Then reopen Steam Link and repeat pairing.
- If discovery still fails, update or reinstall Steam Link and record the exact error message before changing advanced network settings.
Pairing works, but the stream stutters
- Move the headset near the main access point and test again. Improvement points to radio interference, distance, or a weak mesh backhaul.
- Verify that the PC is actually wired. A PC connected over Wi-Fi can create contention with the headset.
- Use the router’s 5 GHz or 6 GHz network, not 2.4 GHz.
- Lower render resolution if the PC cannot render the game smoothly.
- Lower stream quality or bandwidth if the game renders well but the transmitted image breaks up.
- Pause large local-network transfers while testing and avoid adding other wireless variables.
The game launches but the display is black or SteamVR does not start
First close and reopen SteamVR, then restart Steam Link. Confirm that the GPU meets Valve’s requirements and is not an RX 6400 or RX 6500 XT, which Valve excludes because of hardware-encoding support. Update the graphics driver and SteamVR before attempting another launch.
The connection becomes unreliable only in one room
Retest beside the principal router. A room-specific failure usually indicates signal strength, interference, or a mesh node that is not providing a strong backhaul. Keep the PC’s Ethernet cable connected to the router and move the headset or access point only for diagnosis; do not mask the issue by adding a second wireless hop.
What matters most for a reliable experience
- Use a supported encoder. Check the GPU model, not just whether a game runs on a monitor.
- Wire the PC. This is the most consequential network choice in Valve’s guidance.
- Give Quest 3 a clean 5 GHz-or-newer link. Wi-Fi 6 or 6E is recommended, while 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 is the minimum listed capability.
- Keep both devices on one non-isolated LAN. Guest networks, VPNs, and weak mesh links commonly break discovery.
- Stabilize first, tune second. Start with conservative settings and raise quality gradually.
With those conditions met, Steam Link is the appropriate first test for Steam-library VR games: it is free, officially supported on Quest 3, and has a documented pairing flow. Air Link remains useful for Meta’s broader PC-VR ecosystem, while Virtual Desktop is the paid choice for users who specifically value its additional streaming controls.
