How to Play the Dark Urge in Baldur’s Gate 3 Without Killing Companions

The Dark Urge can spare the Act II companion target. Resist the urge, pass a DC 14 Wisdom save, wake and warn the companion—or leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before the triggering long rest. Act I’s Alfira and Quil scene is separate.

Yes—you can finish a Dark Urge run without letting the Urge murder the companion targeted in Act II. When the camp scene begins, choose to resist, pass the DC 14 Wisdom saving throw, then wake and warn the companion. They restrain your character until the episode passes.

There is also a safer timing option: leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before taking the long rest that queues this scene. The game then skips the confrontation and treats both Isobel and the threatened companion as spared. The Act I bard murder is a separate scripted event, however, and saving a recruited companion does not automatically save Alfira or Quil.

What “saving the companions” means on a Dark Urge run

The Dark Urge has several different murder sequences. They are easy to conflate because they all happen around camp, but they use different characters, triggers and solutions.

The Act I bard is not the Act II companion target

After an early long rest, the Dark Urge normally kills Alfira at camp. If Alfira has already been killed or knocked out, the game substitutes Quil Grootslang. Knocking Alfira out non-lethally therefore changes who appears; it does not create a version of the scene in which every bard survives. According to the Dark Urge origin reference on BG3 Wiki, the ordinary event cannot otherwise be prevented.

This scene involves non-recruited NPCs. It is not the later event in which the Urge attacks a party companion, so an outcome involving Alfira or Quil does not tell you whether your romance partner or highest-approval companion will survive Act II.

The Act II scene is the companion-saving problem

After Isobel survives or is abducted, a later camp event can direct the Dark Urge to kill the character’s romantic partner. If there is no active romance, the event selects the companion with the highest approval. Minthara, Halsin and Jaheira are excluded from selection, and Gale is excluded until Elminster has stabilized his orb.

The reliable way to preserve the selected companion is to fight the impulse inside the scene. The alternative is to prevent that camp event from being queued at all by leaving the Shadow-Cursed Lands before the triggering long rest.

The two dependable Act II routes

Route What you do What happens Main trade-off
Resolve the scene Resist, pass a DC 14 Wisdom save, then wake and warn the target. The companion restrains the Dark Urge and survives. You experience the intended confrontation and must make the check.
Skip the scene Leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before taking the long rest that would trigger it. The camp murder scene is not queued; the references describe Isobel and the companion as spared. You avoid the test and the scene rather than overcoming it in dialogue.

Neither route requires changing the character’s class, romance or party composition. The choice is whether you want to play through the resistance sequence or remove its trigger through timing. The first route preserves the dramatic confrontation and gives you a clear on-screen act of resistance. The second is useful when a save is unreliable, when you do not want to risk a high-stakes roll, or when you simply prefer to keep moving instead of staging the camp sequence.

The two methods also solve different problems. Passing the save proves that the character resisted the Urge during the event. Leaving the region prevents the event from being scheduled in the first place. Do not expect the timing route to show the target waking, hearing the warning or restraining the Dark Urge; none of that occurs if the camp event never fires.

Route 1: survive the camp scene with the Wisdom save

This is the in-story solution when you want to keep the event and its role-playing consequences.

1. Make a fallback save before the long rest

Save immediately before the long rest that could produce the companion-target event. The save gives you a recovery point if the wrong dialogue choice appears, a roll goes badly, or you discover that an equipped item is imposing disadvantage. It also lets you compare the two routes without replaying a large section of Act II.

2. Prepare your Wisdom check

The decisive roll is a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw. Before resting, inspect the active character’s equipment and status effects:

  • Equip gear that improves Wisdom saves or otherwise raises the character’s saving-throw bonus.
  • Remove items that impose disadvantage. The reference specifically gives the Risky Ring and Resonance Stone as examples of equipment that can affect the roll.
  • Have relevant buffs ready. A consumable such as an Elixir of Heroism can be available for use from inventory while dialogue is active.
  • Check pre-existing buffs and debuffs rather than assuming the character’s sheet bonus is the whole calculation.

The listed items are examples, not a complete required build. The important preparation is to verify the actual advantage, disadvantage and bonuses shown by your current character before you rest. A strong combat build does not automatically mean a strong Wisdom save, so check the saving-throw line specifically rather than relying on armor class, spellcasting ability or general level.

3. Choose to resist when the Urge takes over

When the camp scene directs you toward the sleeping companion, select the dialogue option that resists the Dark Urge. Do not choose to return to sleep or give up. Those choices allow the murder to proceed.

4. Pass the DC 14 Wisdom saving throw

After choosing resistance, make the Wisdom save. If you prepared correctly and the roll succeeds, the character wakes the companion before the Urge can take control. The target then restrains the Dark Urge and tries to calm them through the episode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Wake and warn the target

The save is not the entire procedure. Follow it by waking and warning the companion. This tells the target what is happening and leads to the restraint sequence that keeps them alive. Treat the warning as part of the solution, not as optional flavor text. The order matters: resist first, complete the saving throw, then choose the prompt that wakes and warns the companion.

If the roll fails or you surrender

If you fail the save, return to sleep, or otherwise give up, the targeted companion can die. The following morning may then require a separate DC 30 Deception check to prevent the camp from turning hostile. That check is an aftermath measure, not a dependable substitute for stopping the murder; reload the pre-rest save if preserving the companion is your priority.

A successful Deception check after the death does not restore the companion. It only addresses the immediate reaction of the camp. If your goal is a no-companion-death run, treat the morning check as a warning that the original rescue failed, not as a second rescue attempt.

Route 2: skip the event by leaving the Shadow-Cursed Lands

You can avoid the Wisdom check and the murder scene entirely by changing the timing. Leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before taking the long rest that would trigger the camp event. The Act Two camp-event reference states that the scene is not queued after you leave the region, and the story proceeds as though Isobel and the threatened companion were spared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use the timing route

  1. Make a save before resting if you want the option to return and resolve the scene normally.
  2. Travel out of the Shadow-Cursed Lands instead of taking another long rest inside the region.
  3. Do not perform the triggering rest before crossing out of the area.
  4. Continue the story after leaving; the companion-target camp sequence will not be added to your pending events.

This is a skip, not a hidden success state. Your character has not passed the resistance test on screen; the event simply never fires once its regional timing condition is missed. Choose it if avoiding the danger matters more than seeing the Dark Urge confront the impulse directly.

Plan the route before clicking Long Rest. If you are already standing at camp inside the Shadow-Cursed Lands, travel out first rather than resting to “check” whether the scene appears. The useful checkpoint is the last save before that rest. Once you have crossed out of the region, the event is no longer queued according to the camp-event rules, so you can continue without waiting for an unexpected companion murder on a later rest.

How the game chooses the threatened companion

The event first looks for an active romantic partner. If the Dark Urge is not in a romance, it uses the companion with the highest approval. This means party composition and approval totals can affect who appears, but they do not replace the resistance mechanics.

Several characters are excluded from this selection: Minthara, Halsin and Jaheira are always ineligible. Gale is also excluded until Elminster stabilizes his orb. These exclusions explain why the scene may target a different companion than a player expects from the visible party or approval rankings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Approval matters only when there is no active romance, and the highest-approval rule applies among eligible characters. A companion being in camp, absent from the active four-person party or recently spoken to does not override those exclusions. If you want to predict the target, identify your romance partner first; otherwise compare approval among the eligible companions rather than every recruitable character.

Sparing Isobel does not immediately kill anyone. It creates the conditions for the later camp event, so plan the long rest that follows her survival or abduction rather than assuming the danger is over when the Isobel sequence ends.

Keeping Alfira and Quil straight

What happens if Alfira is available

Alfira is the default bard target for the first Dark Urge murder scene. Her availability at the relevant long rest determines whether she appears.

What happens if Alfira is unavailable

If Alfira has been killed or knocked out beforehand, Quil Grootslang appears instead. A non-lethal knockout therefore protects Alfira from that particular night but causes the replacement bard to take her place. It does not save both NPCs, and it has no bearing on the later recruited-companion event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is why the common advice “save Alfira as Dark Urge” needs a qualification. You can keep Alfira from being the victim by making her unavailable, but the scripted scene still occurs with Quil. The choice changes the victim, not the existence of the ordinary Act I event. Neither bard is the romance-or-approval target selected later in Act II.

The temporary Alfira appearance is not a new companion

Larian’s Patch 7 notes describe a temporary controllable Alfira appearance at camp during a Dark Urge playthrough. The patch explicitly says, “There are no new companions. There is only death.” In context, that line distinguishes the temporary scene from a permanent recruit; it is not a rule that every Dark Urge companion must die.

Patch details that should not be mistaken for the rescue method

Larian’s Patch 5 notes mention a narrower dialogue interaction in which the Dark Urge can try to deflect Sceleritas Fel’s suggestion to kill Karlach or Lae’zel when the relationship is poor. That exchange can alter the conversation, but it is not the dependable method for the later Act II camp event.

For the companion-target sequence, use the in-scene procedure: resist, pass the DC 14 Wisdom save, then wake and warn the target. Do not rely on the Patch 5 deflection line as a replacement for those actions. It is a separate relationship-dependent dialogue detail, not a universal command that cancels the Act II event for whichever companion the game selects.

Act III: choices that can still kill the party

Saving the companion in Act II does not guarantee a peaceful Dark Urge ending. After confronting Orin, the Dark Urge can refuse Bhaal. That refusal keeps the character from taking the Bhaalist route.

Conversely, embracing Bhaal and taking control of the Netherbrain leads to a scene in which the Dark Urge can kill or release surviving companions, followed by the character killing everyone in the city. If your goal is to carry the party through the conclusion, refuse Bhaal and do not choose the Bhaalist takeover ending.

Think of the Act III decision as a separate final checkpoint. A successful Act II rescue protects the companion from the camp murder; it does not lock the character into a benevolent ending. If preserving the whole party remains the priority, make the refusal of Bhaal and the rejection of the takeover ending part of the final plan.

A practical no-companion-death checklist

  • Know which scene you are facing: the Act I bard event and Act II companion event are separate.
  • If you want Alfira in the Act I scene, understand that making her unavailable substitutes Quil rather than canceling the murder.
  • After Isobel’s sequence, identify your romance partner or highest-approval eligible companion.
  • Before the relevant long rest, save and inspect Wisdom-save bonuses, disadvantage and consumables.
  • In the camp scene, resist the Urge, pass DC 14 Wisdom, wake the companion and warn them.
  • If you prefer not to roll, leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before the triggering long rest.
  • Do not return to sleep or surrender after the scene starts; failure can kill the target and may lead to a DC 30 Deception check the next morning.
  • In Act III, refuse Bhaal and avoid the Netherbrain takeover ending.

Troubleshooting common mistakes

“I knocked Alfira out, so why did someone still die?”

The knockout only makes Alfira unavailable. Quil is the replacement target in the ordinary Act I event, so the substitution is working as designed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The scene targeted someone I was not romancing.”

Without an active romance, the event uses the eligible companion with the highest approval. Check the exclusion rules before assuming the game selected incorrectly.

“I passed the save but the companion still died.”

Passing the check must be followed by waking and warning the target. Also verify that you selected resistance rather than returning to sleep or giving up.

“Can I fix the outcome after the morning scene?”

The morning aftermath can involve a DC 30 Deception check and a hostile camp, but that is not the reliable rescue route. Reload the save made before the triggering rest and use the resistance sequence or leave the region first.

“Does leaving the Shadow-Cursed Lands count as winning the scene?”

No. It prevents the scene from being queued. The references describe the story as proceeding with Isobel and the companion spared, but you do not see the restraint and warning sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you save Alfira as the Dark Urge?

You can make Alfira unavailable by killing or knocking her out before the relevant long rest, but that does not cancel the scripted Act I murder. Quil Grootslang appears as the replacement bard. This event is separate from the Act II companion rescue.

Who can be targeted in the Act II camp scene?

The game targets your romantic partner if you have an active romance. Without one, it selects the eligible companion with the highest approval. Minthara, Halsin and Jaheira are excluded, and Gale is excluded until Elminster stabilizes his orb.

What is the exact saving throw?

Choose to resist and pass a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw. Then wake and warn the companion. The target restrains the Dark Urge, allowing them to survive.

What if I fail the Wisdom save?

The companion can die. The next morning may offer a separate DC 30 Deception check to keep the camp from turning hostile, but that check does not restore the victim. Reload the save before the triggering rest if you want a guaranteed rescue attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I avoid the scene without making the roll?

Yes. Leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before taking the long rest that would trigger the event. The scene is not queued after you leave, and the story proceeds as though Isobel and the threatened companion were spared.

Does the Patch 5 Karlach or Lae’zel dialogue save the companion?

No. The deflection exchange with Sceleritas Fel is a narrower, relationship-dependent dialogue detail. The dependable Act II method remains resisting, passing DC 14 Wisdom, and waking and warning the target.

Can an Act II rescue still end in companion deaths later?

Yes. After Orin, the Dark Urge can embrace Bhaal and take control of the Netherbrain, leading to choices that can kill surviving companions and then everyone in the city. Refuse Bhaal and avoid the Bhaalist takeover ending if party survival is the goal.

The Bottom Line

For the intended rescue, save before the triggering rest, remove Wisdom-save disadvantages, choose to resist, pass the DC 14 Wisdom save, then wake and warn the companion. If you would rather avoid the roll, leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands before that rest. Alfira and Quil belong to a separate Act I event, and refusing Bhaal is still necessary to protect the party through the ending.
