How to Play the Fate/Extra Games in Story Order Before Fate/Extra Record

Play the original game continuity in this order: Fate/EXTRA (2010), Fate/EXTRA CCC (2013), Fate/EXTELLA, then Fate/EXTELLA LINK. Treat Fate/EXTRA Last Encore as an optional anime branch, and treat Fate/EXTRA Record as a modern remake of the first game rather than a sequel to EXTELLA LINK.

The main Fate/Extra story order

The four-game route is the clearest way to follow the original Moon Cell game continuity. The first two entries are PlayStation Portable role-playing games; the later EXTELLA titles move the project into action-focused combat while continuing the setting and storyline established by EXTRA and CCC.

Order Game Original format and date Place in the story
1 Fate/EXTRA PlayStation Portable RPG, released in Japan in 2010 Introduces the Moon Cell Automaton, SE.RA.PH, the Master-and-Servant conflict and the original protagonist’s route.
2 Fate/EXTRA CCC PlayStation Portable RPG, released in 2013 Direct follow-up that expands and branches the original story.
3 Fate/EXTELLA Later game in the same project line Continues after CCC and shifts the series toward large-scale action gameplay.
4 Fate/EXTELLA LINK Later EXTELLA-branch release Continues the EXTELLA branch after the events and framework established by the preceding game.

This order follows the placement used by the official EXTELLA material and Marvelous’s franchise descriptions, which identify EXTRA and CCC as the earlier PSP RPGs and the EXTELLA games as later entries in the same line.

Why each game belongs where it does

1. Fate/EXTRA is the starting point

Fate/EXTRA is the foundation for this branch of the Fate universe. It was originally released in Japan in July 2010 and is described by PlayStation as the series’ first RPG. Its purpose in the sequence is not simply chronological: it teaches the rules and vocabulary that the later games assume.

#1 Best Overall
Fate/Extra - Sony PSP
  • Engrossing Story: Written by the creator of the original Fate series of PC games, Kinoko Nasu, the story of Fate/EXTRA will not only appeal to long time fans of the Fate universe, via the inclusion of many familiar characters, but will also appeal to RPG fans looking for a deep, non-formulaic storyline that delves into such mature themes as loyalty, death, love, and what it means to be human
  • Extensive replay value: Multiple story paths, each with their own unique dialog trees and character interactions that lead to different endings.
  • Intuitive, Fast-paced Battle System: Using Guards, Attacks, and Breaks in combination with powerful Special Moves and Magic Spells, players are required to plan out their attacks to effectively counter their opponent's moves and emerge victorious from potentially deadly encounters.

The game establishes the Moon Cell Automaton, the digital world of SE.RA.PH and the competition between Masters and Servants. It also introduces the original protagonist’s route and the version of the setting that CCC subsequently develops. Starting elsewhere means meeting consequences and character relationships before seeing their initial context.

2. Fate/EXTRA CCC follows immediately

Fate/EXTRA CCC is the direct PSP follow-up, released in 2013. It expands and branches the original story, so it belongs directly after EXTRA for anyone following the original game continuity.

Do not place CCC after either EXTELLA game. EXTELLA is positioned as a continuation after CCC, while CCC is the entry that grows out of the first game’s route. Playing it second preserves that progression and lets the later action titles function as continuations instead of introductions to unresolved material.

3. Fate/EXTELLA comes after CCC

The official EXTELLA introduction describes the game as continuing after Fate/EXTRA CCC. That makes it the third stop even though its presentation and combat differ substantially from the PSP RPGs.

For a player coming from the first two games, the important change is format: EXTRA and CCC are turn-based role-playing games, whereas EXTELLA is action-focused. The change is part of the series’ progression, not a reason to move EXTELLA earlier in the order.

4. Fate/EXTELLA LINK closes the currently established game route

Fate/EXTELLA LINK is the later continuation of the EXTELLA branch in Marvelous’s franchise materials. Play it after Fate/EXTELLA, not between EXTRA and CCC. This keeps the two PSP RPGs together as the foundation, followed by the two action-oriented EXTELLA entries.

Where Fate/EXTRA Last Encore fits

Fate/EXTRA Last Encore is an optional anime branch, not a required game chapter. Watch it after playing Fate/EXTRA if you want an animated interpretation of the Moon Cell setting, but do not treat it as a mandatory step between CCC and EXTELLA.

The official anime site presents its television story in two parts: Oblitus Geocentrism and Illustrias Tendousetsu. Those labels describe the anime’s own structure. They do not turn the series into a missing game entry in the EXTRA-to-EXTELLA sequence.

Recommended placement for different audiences

  • Playing all the games: Finish EXTRA, then CCC, then watch Last Encore only if you want the anime branch, and continue with EXTELLA and EXTELLA LINK.
  • Interested only in the games: Skip Last Encore and play the four-game order without interruption.
  • Watching before playing: Last Encore can be viewed as its own adaptation, but it should not replace the first game when your goal is to understand the original game continuity.

What Fate/Extra Record changes

Fate/Extra Record is a remake and rebuild of the original Fate/EXTRA. It is not a sequel that comes after EXTELLA LINK, and you do not need to finish the EXTELLA games before playing it.

PlayStation describes Record as completely rebuilding the pivotal 2010 entry for modern platforms. Marvelous describes an expanded narrative, enhanced character designs and visuals, and a new strategic battle system that combines turn-based battles with a deck-building system.

The announced release date is January 28, 2027. Publisher materials list PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch versions. Because that date and platform information are announcements, check the local store listing for your region when purchasing; older PSP editions and newer releases can differ by territory, language and availability.

Can Record replace the original EXTRA?

For a newcomer who is willing to wait, Record can serve as the first step in the sequence once it is available. Its role is still the opening chapter: it revisits and rebuilds the original game rather than extending the story beyond EXTELLA LINK.

If you can already access the PSP game and want to begin now, the original EXTRA remains the correct starting point. You can later approach Record as a rebuilt version of the same foundational entry, with its expanded presentation and redesigned combat, rather than expecting it to supply a new chronological chapter.

Choose your route based on timing and access

Your situation Best route Reason
You want to play immediately EXTRA → CCC → EXTELLA → EXTELLA LINK This is the established original game continuity.
You are waiting for the modern remake Record → CCC → EXTELLA → EXTELLA LINK Record can replace the first game once released because it rebuilds EXTRA.
You want the anime as well EXTRA or Record → Last Encore as an optional branch → CCC → EXTELLA → EXTELLA LINK Last Encore is an anime interpretation, not a required bridge between the games.
You only want the action games Read a story summary of EXTRA and CCC, then play EXTELLA → EXTELLA LINK You will miss the original RPG experience, but the EXTELLA pair remains in its correct relative order.

The second route assumes Record is available in your region after its announced January 28, 2027 release. Until then, it is a future option rather than an immediately playable replacement.

Gameplay expectations when moving through the series

EXTRA and CCC: turn-based RPG roots

The PSP games are the role-playing foundation of the project. Their importance is not limited to combat: they establish the Moon Cell setting, the Master-and-Servant conflict and the character relationships that later entries build upon.

Because CCC expands and branches the first game, starting with it can make the opening situation feel unexplained. The practical rule is simple: complete EXTRA first unless you deliberately want to experience the follow-up without its setup.

EXTELLA and EXTELLA LINK: action-focused continuation

The EXTELLA titles move away from the turn-based RPG format and into action-oriented play. Expect the series to feel mechanically different even while it remains connected to the same project line. The format change does not indicate a separate continuity by itself; the official placement still puts EXTELLA after CCC and LINK after EXTELLA.

Record: rebuilt turn-based combat with deck building

Record keeps the first game’s role as the entry point while introducing a rebuilt strategic system that combines turn-based battles with deck building. That makes it a modernized starting experience, not a reason to reorder the later games.

Availability and purchase checks for the older games

The original EXTRA and CCC were released for PlayStation Portable, so access can depend on region, language, physical condition and the platform on which you intend to play. Before buying an older copy, verify the following details:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Region: Confirm that the edition is compatible with your hardware and that its language matches what you can read.
  • Platform: Check whether you are buying a PSP game rather than a later title in the EXTELLA line.
  • Completeness: For a physical copy, inspect the listing for the game disc or UMD, case and any region information promised by the seller.
  • Order: Buy or borrow EXTRA before CCC if you want the original story progression.
  • Modern alternative: If you prefer current hardware, monitor the Record listing for the PlayStation and Switch version available in your territory after the announced release date.

There is no single access solution that applies to every country. A listing that is available in one region may not provide the same language, edition or platform support elsewhere, so confirm those particulars before paying.

A practical, spoiler-light play plan

  1. Start with EXTRA or Record. Use the original PSP RPG if you are playing before Record launches or already own it. Use Record as the opening game after its announced 2027 release if you want its rebuilt visuals, expanded narrative and deck-building combat.
  2. Finish the first game before moving on. The Moon Cell, SE.RA.PH and the Master/Servant framework are the context for the follow-up and later continuations.
  3. Play CCC next. Treat it as the direct follow-up and branch expansion of EXTRA, not as an optional side game to be placed after EXTELLA.
  4. Decide whether you want the anime branch. Watch Last Encore after EXTRA if an animated Moon Cell story interests you. Skip it without affecting the game order.
  5. Move to EXTELLA. Expect the shift from turn-based RPG play to action-focused combat while following the story after CCC.
  6. Finish with EXTELLA LINK. It is the later continuation of the EXTELLA branch and therefore the final stop in this four-game route.

Common ordering mistakes

Putting Last Encore between CCC and EXTELLA

Last Encore is not a required game chapter. Its two-part television structure belongs to the anime branch, so inserting it as a compulsory bridge can make the game sequence appear more complicated than it is.

Treating Record as a fifth chronological game

Record revisits the original EXTRA. It does not follow LINK chronologically, and playing EXTELLA LINK first does not prepare you for a sequel called Record.

Starting with EXTELLA because it is newer

The newer release date and action format do not make EXTELLA the best introduction. Its official placement is after CCC, while EXTRA supplies the setting and story foundation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming the combat systems should feel identical

EXTRA and CCC provide turn-based RPG roots, EXTELLA and LINK are action-focused, and Record rebuilds the first game around turn-based deck-building strategy. These differences are expected across the project line.

Final order at a glance

For the original games, follow Fate/EXTRA → Fate/EXTRA CCC → Fate/EXTELLA → Fate/EXTELLA LINK. Add Fate/EXTRA Last Encore only as an optional anime branch after EXTRA. When Fate/Extra Record arrives on its announced January 28, 2027 date for the listed PlayStation and Switch platforms, it can replace EXTRA as the opening experience because it is a rebuilt version of that game, not a continuation after LINK.
