For a first playthrough, either start with the original Final Fantasy VII or begin with the modern remake series. The original-first route is Final Fantasy VII → Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade → Final Fantasy VII Rebirth → Final Fantasy VII Revelation when it releases. If you prefer the newer presentation, start with Remake Intergrade and continue through the same remake sequence. Square Enix plans to release Revelation, the concluding third remake installment, in spring 2027.
What order should I play the Final Fantasy 7 games in?
The right order depends on whether you want the original game as context or want to start directly with the modern remake series. Neither route requires playing every spin-off or other item in the franchise.
Original-first route
- Final Fantasy VII (original)
- Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
- Final Fantasy VII Revelation, when released
Square Enix lists the original game’s PlayStation release date as January 31, 1997. Playing it first lets you experience that story before the remake project revisits it. This is a recommended way to approach the series, not an official requirement.
Remake-only route
- Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
- Final Fantasy VII Revelation, when released
This is the straightforward choice if you want the newer remake presentation and do not want to begin with the original. Square Enix identifies Intergrade as the first remake-series game, Rebirth as the second, and Revelation as the concluding third installment. The first two are listed as available; Revelation is planned for spring 2027, with no specific launch date established in the announcement. See the Square Enix announcement.

Should I play the original FF7 before Remake?
No. The original is a useful starting point if you want to see the source game before the remake series, but the recommended remake-only order begins with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. Choose based on whether experiencing the original matters to you and whether you would rather begin with its older presentation or the newer remake. Square Enix lists the original PlayStation release date as January 31, 1997, on its Final Fantasy Portal Site.
Should I play Crisis Core before FF7?
No: although Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion takes place before Final Fantasy VII, it is better treated as an optional follow-up than a first game. It stars Zack Fair and begins seven years before Final Fantasy VII. Its chronological position does not make it the best entry point for someone new to the story; play the original or start the remake sequence first, then consider Reunion if you want more about Zack and the surrounding story. Square Enix’s December 16, 2022 availability announcement lists Reunion for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and Steam. Check the current store listing for the edition and platform you intend to use: Square Enix’s platform announcement.

No. Ever Crisis is supplementary, not a required step in either core route. Producer Shoichi Ichikawa said it was intended to let players experience the broader Final Fantasy VII story, including Compilation titles. It launched on September 7, 2023, and added Before Crisis chapters in three parts during July and August 2026. In a July 8, 2026 notice, the producer scheduled service to end for both Japanese and global versions on October 6, 2026, at 11 PM PDT. That makes it a poor choice to rely on as a lasting way to start the franchise. Read the producer’s notice for the service details.

Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, and the books are optional further exploration, not prerequisites for following the play order above. Square Enix’s cited materials do not establish a complete mandatory chronology for every legacy Compilation release, so there is no need to force them into a single required sequence.
