For a first playthrough of the central saga, play God of War (2005), God of War II, God of War III, God of War (2018), and God of War Ragnarök in release order. Then play God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla, which continues after the main game. Optional prequels add stories from Kratos’ earlier life, but the official sources do not establish a definitive chronological order for every entry.
Recommended order for a first playthrough
- God of War (2005)
- God of War II (2007)
- God of War III (2010)
- God of War (2018)
- God of War Ragnarök (2022)
- God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla (after Ragnarök)
This release-order route takes you through the central Greek trilogy before the later Norse-era games. PlayStation’s God of War series page lists the games and release years. Valhalla is an add-on that follows Ragnarök’s story.

Where the optional games fit
For more of the Greek-era story, PlayStation also lists God of War: Chains of Olympus (2008), God of War: Ghost of Sparta (2010), and God of War: Ascension (2013). These are optional companion games, not required steps in the central release-order route. The official sources do not establish a complete chronological placement for every older prequel, so treat any all-games timeline as approximate rather than definitive.
God of War Sons of Sparta
God of War Sons of Sparta is a canon prequel about Kratos’ youth and training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos. It is a 2D action platformer, released for PS5 on February 12, 2026, according to the PlayStation.Blog announcement. It can be played as an optional early-life story, but a precise position for it in a strict chronological sequence is not established by the official sources.
