Use Search to find or approach a target, then switch to Chase when you have a likely route to intercept.
Know what each command is for
The Houndmaster is Portia Maye, a Medium-difficulty Killer. Her dog Snug carries out both commands in Scent of Blood. The official Houndmaster character page describes the current high-level mechanics.

Use Search to build information and position
Choose a useful destination
Send Snug toward an objective or a route Survivors may use. Search is not simply a direct attack: its expanding Houndsense radius can detect Survivors along the way, and the resulting path can help you move toward the area. This is a practical application of the official mechanics, not a guarantee that a Survivor will be found.
Follow the path when it helps
The movement boost applies while you follow Snug’s Search Path. Use it when the route carries you across the map or into a useful position; do not follow automatically if a newly detected Survivor or a more urgent threat calls for a different route.

Turn a detection into a Chase
When Search gives you a likely target, move to pressure them and use Chase. Snug’s line can be redirected, so treat the first direction as a starting point: adjust his path toward where the Survivor is going, not merely where they were when you issued the command. The November 2024 PTB update described a Redirect adjustment intended to give Killers more time to turn and aim, but that was commentary on a test adjustment—not a current balance guarantee or a ranking of the Killer’s difficulty. Make the grab count
If Snug catches a Survivor, the grab pulls them toward The Houndmaster. A Survivor can escape by stunning Snug or by being rescued by a teammate. If the grab ends without injuring them, they are Hindered. That means a grab can still disrupt a Survivor even when it does not immediately produce an injury, but consider where Snug will be and whether a teammate can intervene before committing.

Understand what Houndsense changes
Houndsense links detection to Survivor state. A healthy Survivor affected by Houndsense receives Deep Wound when injured. For injured Survivors, official descriptions refer to tracking or recovery cues; the 8.4.0 launch notes specifically say that affected injured Survivors put into the Dying state have louder Grunts of Pain and longer Pools of Blood. The character page’s wording uses “Drying State” for some described effects, so avoid assuming that every detail in the launch notes is identical to today’s in-game text.
