To open the Selûnite chest in Baldur’s Gate 3’s Owlbear Nest, find the Selûnite Prayer Sheet behind the statue of Selûne and read it while standing beside the chest. Use any party member except Shadowheart. Interacting with the chest before lifting its seal can trigger a burst of radiant damage.
Where to find the chest
The chest is at a small Selûnite shrine in the Owlbear Nest, an Act One location in the Forest. From the cave’s main entrance, follow the southwest route down a cragged rock to reach the shrine. The gilded chest is surrounded by a magical aura. See the Owlbear Nest location guide.
How to remove the seal
- Reach the statue. Jump across to the statue of Selûne and search behind it. A passive DC 10 Perception check can reveal the Selûnite Prayer Sheet.
- Pick up the sheet. A DC 15 Religion check can identify its contents, but passing that check is not required to use it.
- Read it beside the chest. Return to the gilded chest and have a party member other than Shadowheart read the sheet while standing nearby. The prayer dispels the seal, after which you can open the chest normally. The Selûnite Prayer Sheet entry describes the item and its use.
Shadowheart’s reading does not work because she follows Shar, Selûne’s rival. Choose another companion or your player character.
What happens if you touch the sealed chest?
Interacting with the chest while its magical aura remains can trigger a burst that deals 4d6 radiant damage. A DC 14 Dexterity saving throw avoids the damage. The prayer is the straightforward way to remove the seal before opening it.

What’s inside the chest?
The chest contains a Moondrop Pendant, a note describing an ancient Selûnite rite, a silver necklace, a bloodstone, and an Idol of Selûne. The Moondrop Pendant is an uncommon amulet: its Writhing Dance effect prevents its wearer from provoking Attacks of Opportunity while at 50% hit points or less. See the Moondrop Pendant item entry.

If Shadowheart is recruited and present, she may object after the chest’s protection is removed. The encounter offers dialogue choices to agree, try to persuade her, or loot the chest anyway. If you agree to leave it alone and then take the contents nearby, a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check is described; opening or looting it elsewhere can avoid that particular nearby check. Treat the outcome as dependent on the interaction.
