Which ways can you play Ocarina of Time now?

Play the original N64 version on Switch
Nintendo identifies Ocarina of Time as part of the Nintendo 64 Classics library. Access to that library requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack; a standard Nintendo Switch Online membership alone does not include the N64 Classics tier. Check the catalog for your account region because availability and service details can differ by country.
Download the Nintendo Classics app
- On your Switch, open the Nintendo Switch Online application.
- Choose Nintendo Classics, then select the Nintendo 64 library.
- Download the library application and launch it to find Ocarina of Time.
Nintendo says classic games can be played offline, but the console must connect online to validate the active membership every seven days. If access stops, reconnect to the internet and confirm that the Expansion Pack membership is active. What changes with the Switch 2 edition?
Nintendo’s U.S. listing gives November 5, 2026 as the release date for a physical Switch 2 edition. It is therefore forthcoming as of October 7, 2026, not a currently playable option on that date. Nintendo describes this version as an update to presentation and controls, including overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and more modern camera movement. Availability outside the United States may differ; consult Nintendo’s store for your region.

Play on PC with Ship of Harkinian
Ship of Harkinian is an unofficial PC project, not an official Nintendo port. Its documentation says it requires a legally acquired Ocarina of Time ROM and explains how the project extracts the game’s copyrighted assets from it. The documentation does not make ROM copying legal in every country or circumstance, so do not treat the project’s requirements as a general legal ruling. This article does not provide or direct you to unauthorized ROM downloads.
Controls and graphics options documented by the project
The project’s default keyboard mapping uses WASD for the analog stick, the arrow keys for C buttons, and TFGH for the D-pad, with separate keys assigned to A, B, Z, and Start. Its documentation lists DirectX 11 on Windows, OpenGL on supported platforms, and Metal on macOS. These are project-documented options; supported builds and setup details can change, so consult the project’s current documentation before installing.

Use a 3DS if you want the remake
Ocarina of Time 3D is a Nintendo 3DS-family release and a remake, not simply the N64 game running on newer hardware. Nintendo says purchases through the Wii U and 3DS eShops ended March 27, 2023. For a new-to-you copy, look for a legitimate used physical game and check that the cartridge and console are compatible with your region. Nintendo’s old product page remains useful for identifying the game, but its presence does not mean the digital version can still be newly purchased from the eShop.

Which route should you choose?
- Choose Switch N64 Classics if you want the original game through an official, currently documented route and are comfortable maintaining the Expansion Pack membership.
- Consider the Switch 2 edition if you have a Switch 2 and want Nintendo’s announced updated presentation and controls; it is listed for November 5, 2026, after the date of this availability check.
- Consider Ship of Harkinian on PC if you want a PC port and already have the legally acquired game copy required by its documentation. Setup and legal considerations are your responsibility.
- Choose 3DS hardware and Ocarina of Time 3D if you specifically want the remake and can obtain a legitimate copy; do not expect to buy it as a new 3DS eShop download.
